How in the hell do you beat this game by discovering the five Xs????

If anyone has done it, I would love to know what happens. I can't do it no matter how much I play!

Hey there, I just started up a game and discovered that the Design option for ships is greyed out. Eh? I've played this game for half a dozen years and I swear that this hasn't happened to me before.

I assume that I have to check or uncheck a box somewhere? I hope?

I have a custom race w/ Democracy, Cybernetic, and rich world chosen-surely none of those choices affect this right?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am a little behind in the times, I know this because I have a Mac PPC 5400, which can barely run Master of Orion 2 and Escape Velocity Nova. (no, not at the same time)

I have the original Master of Orion, and I always picked the Klackons as my race. I liked them because I didn't need to spend a whole lot of, um, stuff, on the environment, and keeping it clean.

My strategy was, at first, I would raise my population up first, then work on industry. If my scientists came up with something that would raise my population max, I would get to work on it immediately. I would first research weapons until I knew I had the best technology, and then build my ships of destruction. If I had over 100 of each combat ship, I would attack Orion, and know I would win.

I demolished a huge galaxy with the max number of players in it in two hours. I had 2,439 Guardian Heavy Class ships, (24 Death Rays, 25 Stellar Converters, 25 Tri-Focus Plasma Cannons, 26 Plasma Torpedoes) and 5,998 Guardian Light Class ships (had 2 Death Rays on it.)

I was just wondering what everyone's favorite race was, and why.

Hello, I just joined. My favorite computer game is Master of Orion, the original (which is in some way related to actually semi consistently beating the game on Impossible difficulty).

I have only played the second game once and Moo3 a couple times.

When discussing the Moo series with others, most people always refer to Moo2 and have rarely played the first one. And so I come here to solicit opinions on the matter.

Thoughts?

Well, I just got MOO3 yesterday.
I played Moo1 years ago. Loved it. Stayed up hours and hours crushing the unworthy benath the heels of my mighty fleet.
When I got MOO2, I was amazed at the added features and neato interface. Again, much crushing beneath the heels of my mighty fleet.
Then, along comes MOO3. The manual is 160 pages long!! True to my own arrogance and trust in my own intuitiveness, I fired it right up after barely skimming the manual. Specified a small galaxy and a reasonable number of opponents....
And promptly spent 4 hours trying to figure out what was going on.
Nothing happened. I explored. I settled new star systems and planets. I met a couple other races and did some diplomacy. But my wars were anything but glorious. Usually ending with nothing changed. I tried to build warships and go kick some ass, but the enemy's planet's had no "space lanes" from my planet to theirs. Turning what looked to be a quick war into turns upon turns of waiting.
Space lanes? Task groups? The in-game tutorial was tedious and still did not help much. I can't figure out whether certain things are automatic or going to pot because I don't check every little thing each turn.
Can anyone help me? I really want to enjoy this game! I loved 1 and 2. Is it just that I'm spoiled by the ease of conquest in the first 2 and need to be more management-minded? If so, what aspects need attention? How can I ruthlessly dominate my computer-screen-skies again?

Well now the code patch is out, has anyone tried it? Has it improved the game?

I've yet to have a chance at trying it out yet due to work commitments, but it's been getting some fairly good feedback on the Moo3 forums from what I've seen so far...

Has anyone tried Galactic Civilizations yet? I picked it up yesterday and I've been impressed with it. It is a 4x space game, just like MOO, but I am more impressed with it then I was MOO3. Even Orion Sector thought so. Gamespot liked it too.

Well, I've played a bit of the game now. I started playing with Nommo (the Cthuloid Empire), and had a fairly nice romp through the galaxy making friends and stomping on Saurians. I tried my hand an Ithkul variant which I dubbed "The Many" on my second go, and they merrily slaughtered all in their path until someone suddenly got elected Orion President. I don't think I ever did find out who it was, which was a little annoying. Ah well.

The game certainly does have a different feel to its predecessor; at times I feel a lot more like I'm pulling strings rather than directly ordering the troops about, and so forth - less general, more mastermind. I don't really mind that, but I can see why it doesn't appeal to some.

One interface problem that really annoyed me for a while was that my mouse's scroll wheel scrolled a bit too much, such that I occasionally missed some items in the SitRep entirely. However, having changed the MouseWheelSensitivity down to 2 seems to have cleared that up quite well.

All in all, while not having quite the same hook as MoO2, I still see my money as well being spent, so far.

Now that we've had some time with the game, what are peoples thoughts? I'm still enjoying the game, but really, due to the passive AI, I have stopped playing single player. Without it, the game is good, but it doesn't hold me. There is no challenge. So I'm waiting for the patch to see if it can make it what I want the game to be.

Subject:My Feelings on the Game
Security:Public

I've been looking forward to this game for a long long time, faithfully reading the official webpage and just being excited about it in general. It looked like a really good game, and thus I'm sorry to say that -- in general -- I'm quite unhappy with the game, and if I could get my money back by returning it I probably would do so.

Now, I'll preface this by saying that it's affected me so much that I dug into my bank account and went to get myself another game:P Which I've enjoyed much more. Because it's actually depressing me, how uninvolved I feel with the game in general. I'm hoping that, after I've had a chance to get over the initial disappointment, I'll come back to MoO3 and end up at least accepting it if not loving it.

This wouldn't be bad; I felt the same way, mostly, about MoO2:P It was fun, but didn't live up to it's predecessor. It's sad that, in my mind, the franchise is continuing that trend -- but I can accept it on it's own.

:)

Now, before everyone hates me, let me get into the reasons. It's almost entirely the game design. I feel entirely unconnected to everything going on in the game. All I do is move around my scouts, and colonize some planets (if I decide to not let the AI colonize for me, anyway). It's not quite "press the Next Turn button", but it's pretty bad.

The main offender here is the Technology section. I think doing that the way they did was a mistake. You should go up the tech tree slower, they should have more details on what each technology does, and you should be able to initiate projects yourself. As it is, I feel inundated with messages about "technology" every turn -- to the point where I invariably turn off the Green-level messages and don't read them. I feel like I have no control over what's going on. In my mind, this isn't the same as "eliminating micro management" -- they're making technology a non-entity for me, which I find very annoyng and it was definitely the final straw.

The Reserve is annoying; when you build a ship, it should show up in orbit around the planet. That's realistic, and it's not like it would cause that much of a trouble. If nothing else, the reserve should be grouped for each planet you own and there should be SOME kind of icon on the screen telling you that you've got ships in play...

The Real-Time Tactical combat disturbs me, but I'm hoping that with larger task forces it'll look more interesting. As it is, that part of the game is a waste of time -- compared to the very fun and interesting tactical combat that used to exist in the past MoO games.

There are other, more specific, details. I could go into them; the user interface is...odd...in places, which gets to me.

But, mostly, I feel like I've been relegated to non-importance. As if the game REALLY COULD play itself without me, and in fact would perhaps be happier doing that:P I don't feel like I'm mastering a Stellar Empire, I feel like I'm watching one grow and occasionally pushing it here and there.

It's not the lack of micro management, it's the lack of /macro management/. Aside from moving ships around on the little starchart, there's literally nothing for me to do...

6.7 was the final score for Moo3 on gamespot

I thought this was a fair review of the product, although I don't believe they gave enough focus on the fact they released a stable game (hard to find now days). I think that overall there gripes lied in that it was much more complex then past games, but lacked the fun of the previous ones too. I think primarily that comes in ship building... I can see what they were trying to do with this game, that is make a complex game for single player experiences, but make it fast and simple enough to play multiplayer, which is a very tough task to succeed at both.

I've finally been able to order a copy of MoO3 through my local store. Their suppliers were supposed to be sending copies a couple of days ago; they're now expected at the end of the week, although it may be as late as Tuesday next week.

So, the "simultaneous worldwide release" is only two weeks late in New Zealand. All the initial copies of the game that they're getting in have already been ordered by customers (I got the last one). I think I'll be keeping an ear to the phone.

Hey everyone. This is my first post, but anyway... I've been a fan of the series since the first game which my dad had me playing when I was still a youngin' (along with Civilization and Wolfenstein =), and I've been looking foreward to the third installment probably as long as all of you have.

I'm on turn 118 now, and it is apparent (as many have said on the offical message boards) that there are a few bugs, namely that the enemy AI is not aggressive enough in that it only attacks with a few ships at a time and rarely invades planets (except New Orions, who will be very willing to thrash you, and the Ithkul also will invade). The only other thing I noticed was that PD weapons seem to be very awkward... including all of this, though, I have not been able to stop playing (I always set the timer in the options menu, but frequently ignore it Image). These are all just minor errors that'll probably be taken care of with the patch, but regardless, I think this game is an excellent addition to the series.

What do you think?

Ok, I'm about to give up in frustration. In the last few months, I have been told the following release dates for Moo3 in Aus. 3rd of March, 4th of March, End of March, end of February and Christmas. Today, I went in expecting to pick it up, or to be told that it will be out tomorrow. Instead, what do I get told? "The distributors are on holiday, so sometime this week or next week"

What is up with that? Do you think maybe someone could of mentioned this in advance? Maybe someone could of factored it in to the expected release date in Australia? It's not the delay that bothers me, it's the constant changing of the release date! Every time it's almost time, it changes, and once more I'm stuck waiting for the bloody thing to be released, with another sense of let down. On top of the flaming it's been copping on the forums, it's starting to get to me. This game was meant to be a global release. But instead we get staggered releases all over the world, even more delays in spite of the fact the game is boxed finished and selling in other parts of the world...

I'm so #$%$ed off right now...
