COMPETITION GUIDELINES
#DesignHackathon
Team:
Each team is comprised of three students: design, tech, and business. The three students
are to collaborate to create a comprehensive focus for the overall direction and idea of the
iPhone case, e-commerce site, and marketing plan (Ex. color palette, branding, how to
showcase the cause). Teams will be assigned at random to make for even competition.
The cause of the #DesignHackathon, which is supporting females in tech, needs to be
showcased somewhere within the design. How this is showcased is up to the creativity of the
teams.
Individual Team Members:
While you are on a team of three, each of you is responsible for an individual aspect of the
project.
Design: Students Will create a case for an iPhone 7. Multiple designs will be accepted
for consideration, however a minimum of one is required. The design will be judged on
the aesthetic appeal of the case, how it incorporates current trends, and inclusion of the
cause (in a fashion-forward retail ready manner). Design students are encouraged to
show how the product will be visually merchandised in-store and packaged when sold
in retail. For example, if Verizon and Apple are two potential retailers, the team may
create two visual displays for how the product could be sold in each store. The
packaging and in-store visuals could include the cause, inspiration behind the design,
and a bio of the student team including names and universities Students are also
encouraged to show how the My Social Canvas brand name will be included in a subtle
way that still allows the submitted design to stand out.
Tech: Students will create a prototype / mock-up of a web page/e-commerce site
meant to sell the iPhone case the design team member is creating. This aspect will be
judged on user interface design, prototyped functionality (it is not expected that the
system will actually be functional by the end of the competition), ease of use, look and
feel of the site, and overall synergy with the design of the iPhone case being sold on
the page.
Business: Will document a marketing plan for the iPhone case. Each student will be
provided with guidelines on what can be included in this plan. *Note: the guidelines are
just that, guidelines. You are free to include other information in your plan. This aspect
will be judged on level of detail, incorporation of interesting and innovative ways to
market the product (social media presence, PR strategy, in store merchandising, sales
distribution online & in retail stores, advertising) and overall strategy for capturing the
intended ‘brand image’ of the iPhone case product.
Filming:
Each team is responsible for creating a 1 – 2 minute elevator pitch for their product. The
pitch needs to showcase your iPhone case design, web page, and marketing plan. You will
film the pitches on an iPad Pro that will be provided for you. The video of the pitch will be
showed to the judges as a means of scoring the different aspects of your team, including
your overall design. Each team will have an opportunity to show their completed pitch to the
other competitors.
Judging:
Teams will be scored on four different aspects of their project: iPhone case, web page/ecommerce
site prototype, marketing plan, and overall design, which is based on how well
the individual aspects of the project connect together. Due to the nature of the design
contest, with the winning project being sold in retail stores, the scoring of the different
aspects of the project are weighted as follows: iPhone case – 40%, web page/e-commerce
site – 30%, marketing plan – 15%, overall design – 15%. Weighted scoring does not diminish
the fact that cross-discipline collaboration is key to making a successful final project
