Editorial Reviews
Review
"What a wonderful and inspiring alternative to the so-called 'world-building' of today's science fiction industry. Here are some real lessons on how to speculate in ways that may actually open new potentials for human flourishing."
Douglas Rushkoff, Team Human.
"This book offers an essential collaboration between domain experts, writers, and editors, fusing foresight and technological exploration to offer narratives both visionary and eerily plausible."
Dr Helen Marshall, Director, WhatIF Lab, Queensland University.
"The stories and commentaries make us take a long hard look at the world we have ahead of us, knowing that the problems aren't with AI, climate, money, health, or knowledge. Rather, they come from our relationships with them. The lessons are aplenty, but more importantly, there is hope."
Yen Ooi, 2023 Hugo Awards finalist and Director, London Science Fiction Research Community.
"This clever collection of speculative stories explores the possible futures that await us. Through a series of narratives that weave together technological, ethical and societal futures, we are also gifted great analysis and commentary from experts in their fields. The reader is left with a golden glimpse into the extraordinarily possible futures that lie ahead."
Tracey Fellows, Futurist, Author of 'The Future Of You'.

About the authors

Rosie has been in love with science fiction ever since she discovered a whole bookcase of yellow-covered Gollancz science fiction books in Chesterfield (UK) library. She was very disappointed when she read the last of those novels. Her only option then was to write science fiction. Which is what she eventually did after gaining two Masters degrees in mathematics, and a career in aeronautical turned systems engineering.
She was a Finalist in the Writers of the Future contest. Around fifty of her short stories have appeared in various magazines, anthologies and as standalone e-publications.
To help her along the way, she gained an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University, where her course novel was shortlisted for the Janklow and Nesbit prize as the most promising novel on the course. Her debut novel, Edge of Existence, was published by TWB Press in July 2023 and her second novel, A Truth Beyond Full, by Elsewhen Press in November 2024.

Having trained as an astronomer and subsequently managed various research projects in the defence and aerospace industry, Vaughan Stanger now writes speculative fiction full-time. He has seen fifty-seven of his short stories published, including in the BSFA Award-winning Best of British Science Fiction 2022, Nature Futures, Interzone, and Daily Science Fiction. Many of his stories have been reprinted, including ten in foreign translations, and recorded for podcasts. His most recent collection is "Those We Leave Behind and other stories".

Kate writes novels and short stories that range from humorous sci-fi to dystopian visions, cybercrime and urban horror, and also serious non-fiction (as Kate R Baucherel).
She has been embedded in sci-fi since childhood, from her first glimpse of the Daleks from behind the sofa aged five through listening to the BBC Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy broadcasts and being blown away by the first scenes of Star Wars on its original release. As a child she wrote her own Dr Who and Star Wars stories and occasional scripts for friends to act out in the park. She progressed to reading her dad’s collection of Wyndham, Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein and Asimov before discovering Iain Banks, David Brin, Terry Pratchett and so much more. Kate works with emerging technologies and future visions and sometimes it's hard to separate the day job from fiction!

MayaReviewed in India on March 31, 20245.0 out of 5 stars The power of storytelling
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReally like the format of this book, in part fiction and in part commentary. It hits home bringing to life the various futures we face as a result of AI, climate change etc. I’d definitely recommend it whether interested in sci-fi -futuristic novels or in the big challenges we face. Nice to think about these issues through stories.
Emily SReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 20245.0 out of 5 stars A mind-stretching collection of powerful and brilliantly creative stories
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this collection of intelligent and imaginative short stories. Scenarios inspired me to consider my part in the evolution and advancement of technology, politics, health systems and education.
It takes skill to successfully know a subject, consolidate it and communicate it to a reader: The skilful editors of this book manage to do this with no less than five massive themes. As a health professional I was particularly hopeful the section on health and longevity would address some of the current debates in the area and I was not disappointed. Scenarios in this section were thought provoking and relevant.
The subjects are challenging, sometimes even dystopian, and yet I never felt alone in my contemplation: Each section is complimented by a detailed commentary exploring the debates and current reality behind the stories. Like my own personal book club, the commentaries provide further debate and reason to ponder.
A glance at the back pages shows an impressive team of contributors. With such knowledge and creativity combined it is a real treat to have so much powerful creative content curated into a gem of a book.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA perfect mix of narrative imagination and analysis.
JGReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 19, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe short stories in this book certainly provide interesting food for thought.
My favourite story was in Part 4 Health and Longevity, Journey to Brindisfarne Abbey written by Eva Pascoe. As well as being an enjoyable read, it was so plausible that this idea could be used in the future to progress and enhance treatment for infertility. I found it fascinating to compare my thoughts and ideas with the narratives of the experts.
This collection of stories together with the experts views is well worth a read.
BobReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 20242.0 out of 5 stars A collection of rather boring stories Returned for refund
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUnfortunately the stories in this book read a little like the dystopian scifi of the seventies. For example many of the tales are just poor examples of technology taken to their logical conclusions. Very similar to the story of the man jailed for Kidnapping Robert Loius Stephenson after not returning a library book. The result is a set of similar stories that lack entertainment value.
