nikori: (especially to hijikata)
[Voice]
[Early in the evening, probably around 7PMish or so, Heisuke decides to throw a voice entry up on the journals! He's been here for a number of months now, and quite frankly, he gets bored easily. Not as many people are out and about and not as many things are going on at night as they do in the day, so he has pretty much been missing everything, since he can't go out in the sun and all. And it sucks. Especially for someone who needs things to do all the time like he does. Bar fight, anyone? But yes! First time starting his own entry on the journals. Here goes-]

Hey, so uh... any of you have any suggestions for things to do at night around here? It gets kinda boring out past midnight, so... [...yep.]

[Action for Chizuru and Hijikata]
[Well, one possible thing to do at night here apparently is go to the beach! Heisuke has looked around there a few times, but going alone can end up being a bit boring and a downer. Sooo this time he decided to invite Chizuru along! Alone. At night. In an empty area. While Hijikata is out on patrol. What could possibly go wrong, right?!

But in any case, yeah just chilling at the teleporter to bring them to the coast right now. C'mon Chizuru let's go let's go..!]

[Action at why o'clock in the mornan for all you poor souls]
[After getting reprimanded and yelled at by Hijikata for misunderstandings that occurred earlier that night, Heisuke is now just.. patrolling around the village as per usual. While doing so, he discovers a boom box laying around. "Discovers" being the key word here, since Heisuke has never seen or heard of one before in his life. So what does he do? He pokes at it. Literally. And his poking leads him to switch the music player on and...

...play a certain song at obscenely high volumes at like three in the morning. No big deal, right? Except it may wake people up if they're close by, and Heisuke has no idea how the hell to turn this thing down and oh my god what even is this song he is so confused right now okay IT WON'T STOP MAKE IT STOP. (His shouting at the damn thing probably isn't helping either--)

Sorry you sleepy Lucetians, you.]
nikori: (GRACEFULLY SLEEPING YEAAAH)
[may 15; late morning/noonish]
[so like

If anyone happens to go on over into the item shop, they'll find a man -- who, to be quite honest, looks more like a boy, if anything -- curled up on the floor of one of the back corners, next to a large pile of stuffed animals and, uh... pillows. He may or may not have knocked all of these over in his sleep. He's quite a graceful sleeper over there, you see. Especially since he's curled up all over one of those pillows. A very large one of those pillows with an image of a certain Toshizo Hijikata on it. Is he aware of it? nope.

...Yeah. May wanna wake him up.]

[may 16; evening]
[The following day, once he's more or less settled and kind of knows of what's going on here, he can be found walking over to Seventh Heaven for food. Except once he gets to the restaurant? He finds the bar. But he decides to actually not get a real drink for once while there. Instead, he gets one of these... milkshake things. A chocolate milkshake. What the heck is a chocolate milkshake. He's staring this thing down with a raised eyebrow before trying it.]

Huh...

[Feel free to poke at the guy who's staring at a milkshake like it's a cup of rainbow brussel sprouts and platypi.]

Character

Name: Heisuke Toudou
Fandom: Hakuouki dhakhdaskhfkjas
Gender: Male
Age: 23 (born 1844)
Time Period: Before chapter 3 (April 1867) Mid-chapter 3 (Dec.1867)
Wing Color: Blue-green? Like his eyes.
History: Wiki! ..Though that says next to nothing, so…!

Hakuouki begins in January of 1864, as the protagonist, Chizuru Yukimura, ventures to Kyoto in search for her missing father, Koudo. Her arrival brings her to the wrong place at the wrong time, however, as she gets chased by ronin, whom end up getting attacked by some Shinsengumi members. Or, more specifically, the Shinsengumi’s furies, which are the result of human experiments conducted by the group under command of the shogunate. Soldiers of the Shinsengumi are given a “treatment” or “medicine” known as the Water of Life, turning them into these vampire-like furies. Hijikata, Souji, and Saitou happen to be on their rounds during this event and end up finding Chizuru and the furies. Realizing that she had witnessed their secret, they take her in as prisoner and debate on whether or not they should kill her so that word of the human experiments doesn’t spread. Heisuke makes her situation a little worse as he accidentally lets out a little more information than she should know, but in the end, the Shinsengumi end up keeping her alive anyway due to the fact that they had also been in search of Koudo. Having Chizuru there could prove to be a bit of an asset in finding him, after all.

Months later, Hijikata finally grants Chizuru permission to leave the compound with Souji as he goes out on rounds. While out, he and the Shinsengumi capture a Choshu activist and learn of the group’s plans to meet that night and plot on setting Kyoto into flames. So the Shinsengumi plan on infiltrating the Ikeda Inn that night, where the Choshu would be meeting. There, Heisuke runs into a man named Kyuju Amagiri, and believing him to be a part of the Choshu, he attacks him. The man—who is actually a demon, and as such is much more powerful than Heisuke—easily defeated him, and with his fists, no less, rather than a sword. He split Heisuke’s head-guard in half, creating a severe cut on his forehead that refused to stop bleeding and would eventually scar. Because of this encounter, Heisuke ends up having to stay in the compound and recuperate for some time.

As the next year progresses, Heisuke helps recruit new soldiers in Edo for the Shinsengumi. Among these people is a Kashitaro Itou, Heisuke’s senior, who ultimately becomes the new deputy commander of the Shinsengumi. Aside from Heisuke, who had invited Itou to join in the first place, and Kondou, who had taken a great liking to the man, none of the captains are happy about his joining. Naturally, this causes some tensions. Needing more room to house him and all the new soldiers (especially after Sanan becomes a fury and needs to be hidden), the Shinsengumi move from the Mibu area and to the Nishi Hongwanji temple.

On one particular day in June of 1865 and when Heisuke returns from Edo, he takes Chizuru out on patrol. While out, he expresses some concern over changes occurring in Kyoto, only to be interrupted by Souji meeting up with them and finding a woman being harassed by some ronin, whom they then scare off. Souji points out that the woman—whose name is revealed to be Kaoru Nagumo—looks exactly like Chizuru, just more femine. Little do any of them (but Kaoru) know, she is actually a he, and is Chizuru’s brother. Heisuke doesn’t see the resemblance at all though. Later, when they return to the headquarters, they learn about their job to guard the Shogun. Heisuke, not wanting to do this at all, stays behind with the sick Souji.

A year later (October 1866), the Shinsengumi receives an official request to guard the notice board at Sanjo Ohashi Bridge. Harada’s division sets out to protect the board, and of course, they are attacked while doing so. They capture some of the men, but some get away due to a girl interfering with Harada—a girl bearing a striking resemblance to Chizuru: Kaoru, the same girl who Heisuke, Souji, and Chizuru had encountered on rounds a while back. Though at this point, there are only suspicions that it had been her (or rather, him)…

A fury goes into Chizuru’s room one night in April of 1867 and attacks her. Heisuke and the other captains run in the save her, including Sanan, who ends up having a case of bloodlust after they kill the fury. Unfortunately, Itou comes into the scene and finds the corpse on the ground, and then witnesses Sanan’s bloodlust and the captains preparing to attack him. After demanding an explanation, Itou and his soldiers leave the temple and take Saitou and Heisuke along with him to form a group separate from the Shinsengumi: The Guardians of the Imperial Tomb. Or simply the Guard, for short. While Saitou leaves simply to spy on the Guard for the Shinsengumi, Heisuke leaves due to him feeling obligated to follow Itou, and because of his own national imperialist beliefs. The Shinsengumi allow for them all to leave in exchange for Itou keeping quiet about the furies and the Water of Life.

A number of months later, Ryoma Sakamoto, a ronin from the Tosa Domain who had allied himself with the Satsuma and Choshu Domains and orchestrated the Restoration of Imperial Rule, is assassinated, and Harada is framed for the killing. As the Shinsengumi discuss these events, Saitou returns and informs the group of Itou’s plot to assassinate Kondou and expose the Fury Corps of the Shinsengumi to discredit them. In retaliation, the Shinsengumi plans on assassinating Itou, and then using his corpse to lure out the rest of the Guard and kill them as well. Still being a part of the Guard, Heisuke is included, unless he returns to the Shinsengumi as Kondou, Harada, Shinpachi, and the others want.

In the end, they get Heisuke back, but at a great cost. He gets mortally wounded by Amagiri during the battles that took place after the assassination, and is ultimately faced with the choice of either taking the Water of Life or dying. Heisuke then becomes a fury and is declared as dead to the world…

Personality:
Heisuke is basically everyone’s little brother in the Shinsengumi. This isn’t only because of the fact that he’s the youngest captain there, but also because of his up-beat, energetic, and playful personality. He enjoys hanging out with the guys—Harada and Shinpachi in particular—and cracks jokes with them all the time. Sometimes they’ll even sneak out of the compound when they’re not on rounds to go out for drinks and to red light districts, though Heisuke says it’s just for hanging out with Harada and Shinpachi, rather than for the girls.

He’s honest, straightforward, and enthusiastic, and is willing to befriend anyone who he forms any sort of positive bond with. He’ll make it A Thing to keep those friends happy and on their feet as well, always piping in to make any sort of sad or tense situation as lighter as possible. Whenever Chizuru is feeling down about her own situation with her missing father, Heisuke does his best to make sure that she doesn’t stay down and give up hope by saying that he (her father) will show up eventually, and possibly even soon. While recruiting in Edo, he even tries to look for her father himself to help out (but of course, he couldn’t find him).

On that note, Heisuke’s also devoted and loyal to his friends and superiors. He has a tendency to follow them wherever they go, which is shown when Itou leaves the Shinsengumi to form the Guard. Feeling obligated to follow his senior—whom he had invited to the Shinsengumi in the first place—and having his own national imperialist beliefs, Heisuke follows him. In the end though, missing his friends in the Shinsengumi, he does turn around and return to their side. Also, he protects those close to him until the end, even if it means literally throwing himself out in front of the enemy and putting his own life on the line. This proves how brave he is as well, though it can also prove to be rather reckless in many cases.

Heisuke’s quick to react to insults and jabs, whether they’re with bad or good intentions. This is especially apparent during most of his interactions with Harada and Shinpachi, who pick on him nearly all the time in their friendly manner. Sometimes it could be the enemy though, like Kazama. If the retorts are coming from the former, his reactions aren’t truly angry or hurt, but he’ll still shout back at the person and try making his own comebacks all the same.

Although it’s not mentioned until much later in Heisuke’s route of the game Heisuke had actually been a bit jealous of Chizuru in the beginning, since she is able to look for her father. He had not seen his own family in quite some time and was not even allowed to find them. In truth, his father is from the Toudou Domain of Ise, and is the head honcho there. Heisuke knows little to nothing about the man, however. His father sends him money every month as “hush money”, as Heisuke puts it, so that he doesn’t go out looking for him, since Heisuke is his illegitimate child. Between that and the fact that the sword his parents gave him breaks during the battle in Ikeda, he doesn’t feel much of a strong connection with them anyway. He’s not too unhappy about this though, and is actually kind of apathetic toward it aside from his slight jealousy, as Chizuru points out. However, it definitely does cause at least some insecurities for him, since he truly believes that nobody outside of the Shinsengumi would care if he dies. He fears death regardless though, seeing as how he eventually takes the Water of Life solely due to him being afraid of dying.

Strengths:
Heisuke’s not human, and his strength and regenerative abilities gained from drinking the Water of Life and becoming a fury shows it. He can withstand most injuries that humans would not be able to survive through, as long as they’re not against vitals like his heart. Any injuries besides those are healed almost instantaneously.

Heisuke’s proud of his skills, and with good reason. As a captain of the Shinsengumi, and even without his abilities gained from becoming a fury, he’s physically fit and strong and has fantastic sword-fighting skills. He can even throw his sword and aim it well enough to strike down an opponent. He’s also full of energy. Aside from his physical strengths, his up-beat personality also helps keep him running. It’s to the point where he can’t stand sitting around and doing nothing. If he’s injured and can’t join the rest of the Shinsengumi in a fight, he feels bored, and even useless, just sitting out and not contributing.

Despite Heisuke not being much of a reader (which he flat out states), he’s actually pretty aware as to what goes on around him and is well-informed as far as politics go. He also knows to stay one step ahead of his enemies, especially if he happens to know of their tendencies beforehand. For example, toward the end of his route when he, Chizuru, Kazama, and Kimigiku are going to save Sen, he suggests going through the front entrance. Of course, this may seem like a stupid idea, but this was actually a decent plan, seeing as how he knew that Sanan would be guarding only the back entrance. Though the plan doesn’t work out in the end, it is still fairly logical.

His determination is great, and if he has his mind set on doing something, he’ll see it out through the end and make sure it’s accomplished. Even if he’s in a battle and the odds are against him, he’ll still do his best to make it out and try to keep those close to him, like Chizuru, safe.

Oh, and he can also hold down his alcohol pretty well. Yeaaaaaah.

Weaknesses:
Heisuke’s only human, and as such he is susceptible to injuries and illness just like anyone else. However, compared to the rest of the Shinsengumi, he isn’t quite as good with handling pain like the rest of them. After receiving one of his severe injuries, he had apparently cried before medicine relieving the pain finally kicked in.

As a fury, Heisuke actually does have many physical weaknesses. He can’t go out in the sunlight for too long without draining his energy and becoming tired. This is even more so if he’s lacking the blood that he needs to drink, which, of course, he refuses to do. There’s also the fact that being a fury means having his life force stripped away bit by bit as he uses the overwhelming power, shortening his life significantly. Additionally, compared to the rest of the Shinsengumi, Heisuke isn’t quite as good with handling pain like the rest of them. After receiving one of his severe injuries, he had apparently cried before medicine relieving the pain finally kicked in.

He’s not exactly the most perceptive, seeing as how in the beginning, he fails to see past Chizuru’s terrible disguise and realize that she is actually a girl. And when he runs into Kaoru while on patrol, he doesn’t see the resemblance between him and Chizuru, despite the fact that they’re practically identical (and, you know, siblings). Also, when Chizuru happens to listen in on a conversation between him and Sanan about the Water of Life, Heisuke doesn’t realize she’s there. Even after Sanan makes a comment to tell Chizuru not to repeat anything she had heard, Heisuke thinks he’s actually talking to him.

As Chizuru mentions, he doesn’t have a way with words like the other members of the Shinsengumi do. This is partially due to just that, and also due to the fact that he does some reckless things without thinking ahead first. He’s a bit of a loud mouth and has a tendency of saying too much when he’s not supposed to, which has gotten people—like Chizuru—into some trouble. It’s to the point where sometimes he even has to be physically stopped to shut up! Like punched in the face.

Then of course, there are those little insecurities about how he thinks nobody outside of the Shinsengumi would care about whether he’s alive or dead. They don’t necessarily bring him down all the time, but they’re there. He also becomes easily upset by the fact that he is a fury, even though he doesn’t outwardly show it much, if at all. Simply watching his wounds instantly heal brings him misery, rather than relief or even amazement. It, along with the bloodlust, is just a reminder of how he’s not human anymore.

First Person:
Man, how the hell does everyone sleep with these wings on their backs? I mean, I don’t sleep on my back, but it still hurts, you know? Even if you sleep on your side, chances are you’ll end up rolling over at some point and on top of them. It’s starting to be a pain. […Literally. Then again, It always has been, since he got them. SIIIGH.] Anyone have any suggestions for that? I can’t think of anything, but I figured it’s at least worth asking. Now how do I do that filtering thing…
