A New Year of Connection, Community, and Purpose
Dear NYSAFLT Colleagues and Friends,
Happy New Year! There is something uniquely energizing about the arrival of January. It’s a moment to take a deep breath, reset our clocks, and look at our classrooms through a fresh lens. As I begin my term as President, I am filled with immense gratitude for the incredible community that makes NYSAFLT so special.
I am especially grateful to be stepping into this role alongside our dedicated Executive Committee. We are working closely as a team with one singular goal in mind: to support and uplift language teachers across New York State. No teacher should feel like an island. Our strength lies in our connection to one another. Whether you are the only language teacher in your building or part of a large department, please know that you have a statewide “staff room” here at NYSAFLT. This year, I want us to focus on coming together—sharing our successes, solving challenges collectively, and reminding one another why we fell in love with this profession in the first place.
In this time—perhaps more than any other—the work you do is vital. We aren’t just teaching vocabulary; we are handing our students the keys to the world. By fostering empathy and cultural competence, we are helping our students become true global citizens. You are teaching them that while the world is vast, our ability to communicate and understand one another is what builds a brighter future.
Thank you for your passion, your resilience, and your commitment to opening doors for the students of New York. Let’s make this a year of connection and growth!
With warmth and gratitude,
Wendy

Following the passing of our beloved friend, esteemed leader and longtime Executive Director John Carlino in January 2022, the NYSAFLT Executive Team and Board of Directors continue to ensure that our organization is functioning efficiently. The NYSAFLT 100K for 100 Years John D. Carlino Legacy Fund remains the best way to honor John by making donations in his name. With this fund, NYSAFLT will remember John and his vision to financially support projects and help solve problems that language teachers and leaders face. As we move forward along the pathway that John paved, his legacy will forever live on with the NYSAFLT 100K for 100 Years John D. Carlino Legacy Fund.
