The Statue of Liberty was gifted to the United States by France and unveiled in 1886 to celebrate the two nations’ shared commitment to liberty and democracy. The Statue of Liberty features broken shackles by her feet to symbolize freedom and an end to slavery. Positioned near Ellis Island, it also became a powerful symbol of hope and welcome for millions of immigrants arriving in America. Under the current administration, all of those values are being undermined and the will of the people is being ignored by a president who wants to be a dictator or king. In this print the use of the phrase “It Can’t Happen Here” is a reference to Sinclair Lewis’s 1935 novel of the same name, which follows an American politician’s embrace of fascism and ascent to becoming the country’s first dictator. Let’s take the fascist threat seriously and make sure it actually can’t happen here because the way things are going many of the safeguards against fascism and dictatorship are being dismantled. Free speech, the right to assemble, the right to due process under the law are under assault. Liberty is shackled and we need to do everything we can to reverse that. A portion of proceeds from this print will be donated to @BraveNewFilms to support their projects pushing for justice and against fascism. Thanks for caring!

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! This art piece is a tribute to MLK’s non-violent efforts on behalf of civil rights and equality. It will be included in my upcoming “Modular Frequency” art show at @subliminalprojects opening Feb. 28. Last year, the crew and I painted a MLK mural at Manual Arts High School (slide 2), which is part of the LAUSD public school system. @brandedarts brought together an amazing group of artists to paint murals at the school to reinforce their creative culture and programs, but also to add some art to the whole surrounding community. The school is on South Vermont in Los Angeles, very close to MLK Boulevard, so I included a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr., who is a hero and role model for me and so many others. MLK’s ideas about peace and justice are incredibly relevant in the current moment, so I’m very happy to have him as a focal beacon within this large mural as well as some of my fine art. Check out the mural if you’re in the area. It’s always great to have another mural in my hometown of LA celebrating education, creativity, and social justice!

“The Voice of Hind Rajab” is a film everyone on Earth needs to see. After watching the movie, I was dizzy with frustration, anger, and sadness, but deeply moved by the efforts of rescue dispatchers to save the life of five-year-old Hind Rajab, a little girl pinned down in a car by Israeli army gunfire with six of her family members already dead around her. Like many, I have been horrified by the loss of life and pervasive suffering in Gaza. First, I was shocked by Hamas’s murdering and kidnapping of Israeli citizens on October 7, and I have since been horrified by the indiscriminate bombing and disregard for human rights and human life in Gaza by the Israeli military. The denial of water, electrical power, and basic necessities to Gaza’s citizens, as well as their mass displacement, has no moral justification. One of my biggest frustrations is that the Western media is largely uninterested in giving humanizing equal coverage to the suffering in Gaza that has taken the lives of an estimated 73,000 Palestinian civilians, the majority of whom are women and children. Though there are many photojournalists working courageously in Gaza to shed light on the brutal human consequences of Israel’s offensive, the Palestinian perspective remains shamefully underrepresented by the media. A film like “The Voice of Hind Rajab” strips away the superficial overlay of country, ethnicity, and religion and gives voice to a 5-year-old girl struggling to survive the unimaginable in Gaza. If you have any respect for human dignity, save your comments until you’ve seen the film. Please, everyone, see this film!

Lost & Found is a series of releases pulling from the archives of Obey Giant Art. This week, we are releasing a number of prints from 2010: Mandala Ornament 1 in black & cream, Mandala Ornament 2 in black & cream, and Mandala Ornament (Holiday), a version that has NEVER been sold publicly. A limited number of these prints will be available on Thurs, 1/15 at 10AM PT in the Obey Giant Store.

These are the first mandala images I made back in 2010 as I began exploring the structure of circular ornamentation and examining why that shape is so pleasing and soothing. Mandalas are created in many cultures and are symbols of harmony, wholeness, and the universe in its ideal form. I believe in those ideas. Buddhist monks poetically address the paradox of striving for harmony but accepting impermanence and destruction with their rituals of creating and destroying elaborate sand mandalas. In many ways that acceptance of impermanence is easy to relate to street art and life in general. I have created many mandalas in the years since, but these were the first!

Congrats to @michaelbjordan on his Golden Globes nomination for Best Performance in Sinners! It was cool to find out 10 years ago that he’s an art enthusiast who infuses a social point of view into his projects whenever possible, which is evident in the roles he plays, including the twins in Sinners.
