Here is a little piece of history which I found when looking through some old family papers………

It is a certificate presented to my mother, who was eleven at the time, for sending gifts to the soldiers in the trenches during the 1914-1918 War.
Strange that I should come across this at a time when some of those soldiers are in the news again, for it has just be announced that the three hundred or so men shot for various military offences during that war are to be.. ‘pardoned’.
It is impossible today to understand what went on in the minds of those officers who sent what were mostly ‘shell shocked’ young men (four were only seventeen) to be ‘shot at dawn’, but it is hard to forgive them when one considers that ……
………The Americans never executed a single man.
