Believe me, I’m no fan of Jeremy Clarkson and consider him to be a pompous, publicity seeking prat, but what an unbelievable fuss he has caused with his comments on “The One Show”.
His humour might not be to your taste, or mine come to that, but surely people must realize that he was joking, or are more and more people in this country having a ‘sense of humour bypass’ ?
The truth is that his “shoot the strikers” comments have been taken out of context, as he made the remarks after jokingly praising the “fantastic” strikes for emptying London of people .. “Everybody’s stayed at home, you could whiz about, restaurants are empty… airports, people streaming through” .. he said, and then he went on to explain that he had to balance his praise as .. “this is the BBC” .. and made his remarks about shooting the strikers.
In the past he has upset the Welsh, Mexicans, gypsies and lorry drivers with his ‘jokes’, so what is the point of the BBC inviting onto a show someone renowned for being controversial and, no doubt, with the expectation of him ‘ruffling a few feathers’, and then having achieved what they set out to do, issued the standard meaningless apology ? It’s like when they used to invite the likes of George Best and Oliver Reed onto chat shows knowing that there was a good chance that some viewers would get a laugh out of their demeaning drunken antics.
Jeremy Clarkson is employed by the BBC to present “Top Gear” for which he is paid a ridiculous amount of money. In addition to this he was invited onto “The One Show” to plug his DVD’s just in time for Christmas.
It has now been reported that the BBC is facing fresh questions today after Clarkson is said to have claimed that producers were warned in advance and approved of the comments he made on the show. Perhaps it’s time that his bosses at the BBC …
… were stood against a wall ! 😉
