  • My Life and Times

I was born in 1939 BC.
    That’s ‘Before Computers’.

Luckily I survived the following events in my life, such as

World War II, The London Blitz, Rationing, and worst of all… Archbishop Temple’s School.

During the mid 1950s I was enjoying Rock ‘n’ Roll and being a first generation teenager, when suddenly, just like Elvis, I found myself in uniform during ‘The Cold War’…and then

I became ‘a family’. Which meant that I sort of missed the ‘swinging sixties’, but still managed to look a complete prat in the 70s, just like everyone else.

During the ‘Thatcher Years’ I lost my hair and a lot of people lost a good deal more. My career fluctuated to say the least as I was demoted, promoted, fired and hired a number of times, but still I managed to stagger on into a welcome retirement and to celebrate 60 years of happy marriage.

Caught in the act !

Posted by Big John on May 25, 2020

This is how my back yard garden normally looks around this time of the year. Unfortunately, this year, it has been neglected due to self isolation and the closure of garden centres and DIY stores. In fact it all looks a bit of a mess !  …

Now last year I often found that my young red geraniums had been uprooted from their pots and the compost in which they had been carefully planted had been scattered all over the place. Obviously one of our local wildlife visitors was responsible, but which one ?

Well it wasn’t this sneaky looking fox or his mates, because this morning I looked out of the window and saw this little bugger ..

We deserve better !

Posted by Big John on May 19, 2020

In a number of my previous posts I have often referred to our parliamentarians and government ministers as .. “that bunch of self-serving hypocritical slippery chancers”, and in view of their current performance, when it come to the present ‘Covid19’ crisis, I would like to add “posturing plonkers” !

Incompetence does not even begin to describe the way that our so-called ‘leaders’ have handled matters, lied and then covered up the results.

When it comes to keeping the public informed, standing in front of the Union Flag, looking unhappy and leaning on a lectern bearing silly slogans which convey “the bleeding obvious” is, as far as I’m concerned, just a way of trying to look competent, before implementing the next ‘knee jerk reaction’ or displaying, on the TV news, yet another..

A faded memory.

Posted by Big John on May 8, 2020

Today is the 75th anniversary of ‘VE Day’ (Victory in Europe). I was there, although I don’t remember much about it, as I was only six years old at the time.

However, I do have a few memories of those war years, such as the wail of air raid warning sirens, the boom of anti-aircraft guns, searchlights sweeping the skies, the drone of German V1 missiles and the question “Is it one of ours ?” whenever the sound of an aircraft engine was heard overhead. It was all part of everyday life for me; although I was a little too young to have experienced much of the fear that older children must have felt.

I have a vague memory of people celebrating and of a large bonfire burning across the street from our bomb damaged house. The fire was on an area of ruins and rubble where, once had stood ten families’ homes.

Where do they all come from ?

Posted by Big John on May 3, 2020

It’s ‘lockdown’ and the street where I live is deserted apart from the occasional vehicle, and these are mostly from supermarket delivery services or belong to some kind volunteer delivering groceries to one of my fellow grumpy old gits.

Hold on a minute ! .. that’s not quite true, because some family of lycra clad loonies has just pedalled passed my window narrowly missing a couple of joggers who were completely unaware of them because of all the ‘keep fit’ gadgets they were concentrating on and being made ‘soundproof’ by their wireless earbuds.

Now some old girl who was passing has just stopped to let her ugly little pooch crap on the grass verge next to my driveway. With a bit of luck the smartphone ‘zombie’ heading this way will tread in it and spill his coffee.

Oh! .. and before I forget, amongst a number of exercise ‘strollers’, were two old farts who were observing the ‘social distancing’ rule by tottering down the centre of the road, and one of them was using a ‘tri wheel walker’.

Earlier I saw a kid on a scooter, which makes me wonder how long it will be before I see a masked rider and hear the rumble of an approaching …

…  skateboard  ?
