OBX Part 1

We spent a glorious week at the Outer Banks of North Carolina over the last week in May.

It was a perfect week, and we couldn't have spent it with better people. Brian's brother, Marc, and his family drove down from New York to join us. The kids loved playing with their cousins, and we had a blast hanging out as adults. (And Nathan went to New York at the end of the trip, for an additional week with his cousin Andrew!)

On the first night after we arrived, we had a picnic dinner on the beach. The menu consisted of hoagie sandwiches and fruit with a topping of sand.

We spent some time that night and the next day, which was Sunday, enjoying the scenery and romping along the oceanfront.

The house we stayed in was fabulous--spacious and just one block from the beachfront.

We did many things that week, but mostly we just relaxed, slept in, played games, watched movies, and enjoyed some much-needed downtime. Kristin and I spent one memorable evening having a long talk in the car in the parking lot of a movie theater, and the next evening we actually made it inside to see the movie. And we spent a great morning shopping. Emma and Clara went to see The Lost Colony with Aunt Kristin and Uncle Marc. Brian and I went out to a seafood dinner. The whole crew ate at Five Guys. And we did so much more--seen in the posts to come. The only thing that would have made the week more perfect would have been staying for a second week!

OBX Part 3: Currituck Lighthouse

One morning, we went to see the Currituck lighthouse. It was beautiful.

Windy!

It was very windy at the top, and we were a bit nervous about the narrow balcony, the little people in our charge, and the long drop below.

OBX Part 4: Kites and Sand Dunes!

The Outer Banks has an abundance of wind, which means one thing: Kite flying!

We headed to Jockey Ridge State Park, climbed the gigantic dunes, admired the incredible view of the ocean, and--with hair flying incessantly in our faces--got down to business.

Here we are unloading the kites. I was in the background taking pictures and handing out endless supplies of fruit snacks to distressed, wind-blown children.

Madeline didn't love the kites, but she loved crawling through the sand!

Nathan loved his kite...for about two minutes.

We also had fun climbing up and racing or sliding down the large sand dunes. Forget the gym; just climb those babies a few times, and no more workout is required.

My brother-in-law, Marc, and I are both rather competitive. So we decided to put it to the test and race down the dunes.

Can you tell who won?

But then he went a-tumblin'...

...while I remained on two feet. I think that means I won.

Another climb to the top, and another race--with the girls.
