About this journal

Open Quaternary is a fully open access, double-blind peer-reviewed journal, publishing contributions that consider the changing environment of the Quaternary as well as the development of humanity.

The journal focuses on all aspects of the Quaternary. This scope is intentionally broad, and covers a range of specialisms such as geomorphology, palaeoclimatology, palaeobotany, palynology, palaeontology, zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology, biological anthropology and Palaeolithic archaeology.

The Open Quaternary site has received over 200,000 page views since its launch in March 2015, with the most accessed publication currently having been viewed/downloaded over 12,000 times. All publications are widely indexed for enhanced dissemination and findability. Average submission to publication times are currently around 140 days.

Why not follow our new Instagram account, read the Open Quaternary blog, or join our Telegram messaging service?

Open Quaternary was founded with the goal of making Quaternary Science more open, inclusive and diverse. We recognise that academia does not exist separately from the societal frameworks and institutions that have perpetuate injustice, and that we have a responsibility to underrepresented groups. We therefore wish to emphasise that Open Quaternary does, and will always, warmly welcome submissions from BIPOC, women and non-anglophone authors.

Announcements

  • Call for Editor-in-Chief of Open Quaternary

Open Quaternary is looking to appoint an Editor-in-Chief starting in January 2026 for a period of three years. The new Editor-in-Chief will be working closely with the current Editors-in-Chief during a transition period.

The journal’s Editor-in-Chief will be supported by the editorial team, which consists of a social media editor and an editorial board made up of researchers from around the world who cover a broad range of Quaternary disciplines. The EiC holds overall responsibility on major decisions and is ultimately accountable for the quality of peer review and publications. They will lead the direction of the journal, in collaboration with the Editorial Board and publisher.

As the Editor-in-Chief you will be responsible for managing the journal, and shaping the future of Quaternary research.

  • Call for Papers 2024
