CHARACTER INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Leonard Church
CANON: Red vs Blue
TIMELINE: end of season 6
AGE: ~ 7 (appears early 30s)
REFERENCE: Link
PERSONALITY: In simple terms, Church is an asshole. He's foul-mouthed, petty, pessimistic, spiteful, argumentative and callous... but he can also be deeply loyal and genuinely caring about those few people he calls his own—usually managing both at the same time. At a deeper level he's a profoundly broken shell of what he once was. Chunks of his core personality have fractured off, leaving only remnants behind.

He'll cover any attachment to others with a thick layer of sarcasm and insults. Despite this attitude Alpha has formed deep, if prickly, relationships with the other members of Blue Team and to a lesser extent Red Team. The problem with liking people is the worry and pain that come with feeling responsible for them. Deep-seated traumas that he tries to shield himself from.

Trust: Alpha finds it difficult to trust others, but is still willing to work with them for the greater good. Ultimately, for all his professed hate for everyone and everything, he eventually steps up and does the right thing—sometimes even being the force that gets everyone else in motion.

Fear: That doesn't mean Church is brave, in fact he can be down right cowardly in certain circumstances. His first instinct is generally for self-preservation and then doing the right thing follows some time after. In the end, this rare ability to be both self-concerned and selfless is what leads him to sacrifice himself for the sake of the others.

Logic: As a smart AI, Alpha was once capable of performing extraordinarily complex calculations and processing massive amounts of information at lightning speed. Those days are long behind him and he's more at the level of a slightly better than average human. While still 'logical' by human standards, he sometimes jumps to the wrong conclusions, especially about his own nature, deciding being a ghost is the obvious explanation. When he encounters a situation that he can't easily process, Church goes into a sort of feedback loop, stuttering and lacking the ability to form complete sentences until he can work through/dismiss whatever it is.

Ambition: Alpha has a low tolerance for inaction when something actually needs to be done. Because of this, he likes taking charge of things and he has the ego to back it up. After all, he's awesome and will remind others of this fact if it's ever in doubt. Church isn't a tyrant, however, and is willing to defer to others with more experience and take advice. As much as he doesn't like Freelancers, he's willing to follow their lead. Subconsciously following direct orders, even if he'll resist and gripe about it the whole time—after all, it was his original purpose to aid them. Beyond that, however, Church doesn't have any great desire to be more than he is, do more than the bare minimum of what's expected of him or change the status-quo. Things simply are what they are and that's that.

Happiness: Overall, he rarely has any great moments of joy. Satisfaction and even contentment, yes... but that's not quite the same thing. In general he's a pessimist and occasionally morose. If anything starts to tip him too far into depression, he'll emotionally shut down to protect himself. He doesn't handle embarrassment well and will deflect or snark to get things to move on. Most of what annoys Alpha on a regular basis is perceived stupidity of the others in his situation. He frequently berates others as idiots and loudly expresses his frustration with situations that he feels are ridiculous. It's not that he doesn't have a sense of humor; his amusement however, often comes at the expense of others.

Anger: Church is an angry guy but he isn't able to maintain it for as long. His anger is impotent, limited to outbursts that die off quickly. While he can hold a grudge, he more or less lets things slide. Church can't kill, no matter how hard he tries. Even at point-blank range he will miss a living target. Extreme emotional stress can briefly override this. He's also shown a philosophical side, most clearly demonstrated by his learning to accept the unacceptable and the value of hating people 'for their own special reasons'.

Deceit: Church couldn't lie his way out of a wet paper bag. The harder he tries, the worse he is, stammering, overly embellishing, and so on. If he's ever successful at deception, it's only through deflection or leaving details out. Memory: Alpha has no idea what he is, how he came to be, or why. Everything he thinks about his past and identity has been cobbled together from left over bits of lives that aren't his and what few threads remain of his previous self. He speaks about them with absolute authority, but his 'memories' are broad strokes of singular events or people.

ABILITIES:  Church isn't aware of the vast majority of his abilities as a Smart AI and it's questionable if he could use them in his current fractured state. The ones he still has are seen as 'ghostly powers' by Church, who was convinced that he wasn't in fact, an AI. These spooky ghost powers will be nerfed by being in a human body. The two he used most frequently in canon are...

Jumping: Alpha isn't limited to a single chip or storage unit. He can transfer himself from one host to another, usually over radio frequencies. This lets him piggy-back different hosts and makes him very difficult to isolate and potentially destroy. It also lets him use his second and arguably most powerful ability.

Possession:  Alpha is able to override the willpower of any intelligent host (human or AI) and does so without even realizing it. It's just something that a 'ghost' can do.  He can control that host's body as if it were his own or interact with their memories and subconscious.  While he's doing this, the subjects own self is essentially asleep and will have no memories of what happened while Church was in charge.

PERSONAL EFFECTS: Mjolnir variant armor, sniper rifle, pistol

PRIZED POSSESSION: His armor
