Background:
Over the past two years, originalprojects; has been asking a simple but radical question:
What if the whole of Great Yarmouth was the art school?
This week of activity [otherwsie... intensive] grows from two years of research. It began with Razing the Agenda (2023), an online workshop bringing together artists, activists and cultural organisations from across England to discuss cultural work in “Priority Places” and what local cultural needs and ambitions look like when shaped by the people who live there. This led to the CONTRAcurricular Summit (March 2024) in Great Yarmouth — a day on radical and alternative arts education, exploring how new models of teaching and learning are emerging in places without traditional art schools, and placing Great Yarmouth inside the national conversation about new forms of learning.
Building on this, our Research on the Great Yarmouth Exploded Art School (2024–25), supported by Freelands Foundation, began developing the concept of a town-wide art school campus — using the assets of our place - outdoor spaces, shops, cafés, beaches, museums, parks, and organisations as learning sites - and the interests and expertise held amongst us.
Our research asked:
This work has also involved travel and peer dialogue — joining Blackwater Polytechnic as part of the Anglian Embassy at the Supermarket Independent Art Fair in Stockholm, taking part in Sluice Art Fair in Iceland (hosted at LungA School), and contributing to the Juxtapose Think Tank in Aarhus — learning from international artist-led schools, cooperative learning models, and place-based education practices.
We also explored the ethos of the Danish Folk High School (Højskole) tradition — focused on communal learning, shared purpose, and education rooted in everyday life — see: danishfolkhighschools.com.
