CHARACTER NAME: Leonardo da Vinci
SERIES: Da Vinci's Demons and Official about
Da Vinci's Demons is a historical fiction representation of Leonardo da Vinci's life, more specifically, before he becomes the renowned artist we all know as today. In his youth, he is learning how to become a master draftsman and coming into his own as an artist. He struggles with being a bastard and trying to be a legitimate son while attempting to uncover more about his mother. In this version of history, there is a great conspiracy driven by the Catholic Church that hides the truth of humanity while the mysterious group known as the Sons of Mithras work hard to discover this truth and free humanity from its bonds and lies. Da Vinci's Demons shows Leonardo as not only a genius, but an engineer, a fighter, and a man who knows no limits of his own imagination.
As much of his life is shrouded in mystery and there is a few years of time where there is no written record of what happened, Da Vinci's Demons takes full advantage of these inconsistencies and spins them to fit into a more high-action, conspiracy theory edition of his life. It is rooted in history, but consider this more of an alternate universe as real events and real people have been altered for the sake of the show.
CANON POINT: End of The Devil, episode 6 of 8
AGE: 25
APPEARANCE: Here!
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A
PERSONALITY:
Leonardo, known as Leo to his closest friends, is the very definition of cocky. The worst of this is that he can actually back up his cockiness by his skill and genius. "Arrogance implies that I don't know my own worth. I know my own worth." Those are the words he tells the guards and he fully believes them. The trouble with Leo is that he is so aware of his intellect that he constantly is trying to prove himself and to outwit others by his words or his works. Some of this is driven by the fact that he is a bastard and wants to be so desperately approved by his legitimate father, who makes it a point to remind him that is he is just a bastard. These limits imposed on him by society mean nothing to him. He tells his father that the point of progress is to overreach, and Leo means to overreach and overcome his status as a bastard and a mere draftsman. Leo has grand dreams and even grander schemes for discovering the truth of his mother and chasing after the fabled Book of Leaves.
With his genius comes a drastic price: an inability to completely relate to others. Leo is a quick thinker, almost erratic, and it's impossible for others to understand what he's doing until he's halfway through whatever he's doing. He should be grateful that his friends are willing to go with his plans, but he takes them for granted. Several points in the show do people tell him that he can't really love because everything to him is logic and only an art form for him to study. Indeed, Leo does become so wrapped up in himself that he blocks out everything else, including the danger that could come to himself and those around him. His absolute genius and his need to understand the world put everyone around him at risk constantly.
Logic is his life. Science is how he functions. He has a need to understand everything, to really dissect it and learn it just so he knows how it works. His observational skills give him an edge in figuring out complicated or seemingly magical things, such as the moment when nuns were thought to be possessed by the Devil when really they were all inhaling a very toxic mold. It doesn't matter how long it takes or what materials he needs, in fact, nothing matters when it comes to figuring out a mystery. It's why he's so adamant on going after the Book of Leaves, because it would give him the answers he needs about his long-forgotten mother and help him to understand the conspiracy and the mysteries that the Sons of Mithras constantly repeat.
As an artist, Leo wants things to be perfect. When he figures something out, he needs it to go his way. As seen when he realizes that building his war machines would only further create war, he begins to recklessly destroy his own work to stop the madness. This is another point in showing that at most he only thinks about himself. He only knows how to win and to be better than others. Leo lacks the true life experience of sacrifice and loss, if only because he doesn't want to let himself lose anything. Usually his aversion to want to win is brought on by his pride and his arrogance. He firmly believes that a person can always win or that sacrifice is not necessary. It's only until episode six that he has a vague understanding of loss and that to win it may take a drastic loss. The idea of sacrificing something for the greater good is generally lost upon him.
