I live in the UK and amongst many other things, I have an obsession with books, particularly vintage paperbacks from about 1840 up to the end of the Second World War.  That covers the early Penguin Books of course, but also their European predecessors – Albatross and Tauchnitz.   The Tauchnitz series, published in Germany (but in English) over the 100 years from 1842 to 1942, includes almost every significant English-language novel published in that period.   I have a large collection of these, running to several thousand books.   I’m also on a mission to rescue and document as many as possible of the UK Services Editions – fragile paperback books, produced in great quantities for the British Armed Forces during the Second World War, but mostly now disappeared without trace.
