University of Eastern Finland – Itä-Suomen yliopist

The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) with about 16,000 degree students is one of the largest and foremost multidisciplinary universities in Finland, offering coursework in 13 fields of study and more than 100 major subjects across four faculties and two campuses. The multidisciplinary Neuroscience Research Community (NEURO RC) at UEF aims to understand the disease-specific and common molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy and to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic approaches for their prevention and cure. Comprising 17 research groups, NEURO RC integrates biological neurosciences with data sciences, neuro-innovations, and neuro-ethics. Pattern-Cog project is hosted by the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences of UEF, which is a research institute that responds to the global health challenges created by the ageing of the population and changes in lifestyle by focusing on the research of cardiovascular and brain diseases.

Structural Brain Mapping Group – Jena University Hospital (JUH)

Our research program is directed toward the development of advanced computation tools for the analysis of structural brain data. More specifically, our group is heavily involved in the development of algorithms and tools for processing of voxel- and surface-based imaging data which encompasses segmentation, surface reconstruction, and disease prediction. Specific areas of interest include the investigation of ageing, structural brain plasticity, and schizophrenia research.

We have developed several software tools, including the Computational Anatomy Toolbox for performing voxel- and surface-based morphometry, which is widely used by the scientific community.
