| | anxious | ] | Well hello, livejournal.
Today was one of those days, commute-wise. I got on the G train as usual, but one stop later service was suspended due to police activity somewhere else along the G line. We got out and walked a few blocks to the C at Fulton. I took that to Jay St. - Borough Hall, which put me back on my usual route, then waited forever for the F train. Then at West 4th St. they changed my F to a V train (for those of you who don't know, it still says "F" on the train but it runs on the V line). This isn't too bad as the F and V run on the same lines for several stops, but they split one stop before mine. So I walked my ass 8 blocks to work. I was 30 minutes late.
In other news, the Unites Stated Citizenship and Immigration Service visa processing center in California can kiss my ass. They are worthless. |

| | amused | ] | I thought the following was funny.
One of the artists I work for has been invited to the White House. She is performing at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, and this reception at the White House is for that. Anyway, we got this really pretty invitation at the office, and it gives a number to call to RSVP to the Social Secretary. I called the number and followed the prompts, only to be told that the voicemail box I'm trying to leave a message in is full. |

| | tired | ] | I have to admit, NYC is wearing on me. Somehow this city seems to suck up more of my time, and there is never enough time for me to do all the things I want to do. Although I guess the city offers more for me to do, so maybe I'm just confused.
I want to:
Play scrabble
Take a music theory class
Have a couple nights with nothing planned
Keep a clean apartment
So. Scrabble could be 3 times every 2 weeks but I keep it to once a week, either on Mondays or Wednesdays. My music theory class will be either M/W nights or T/TH nights. Hopefully T/TH nights so I can keep Scrabble. So say I have Scrabble Monday nights, and class on Tuesday and Thursday nights. That leaves Wednesday nights to spend at home with Phil, and often he works late on Wednesdays. When does that leave me to clean the apartment? The weekends of course, when one would like to relax.
I'll probably have to sacrifice the Scrabble meetup, or perhaps go to the bi-monthly Wednesday meet up, when Phil works late, leaving us Monday nights together.
This city leaves me tired, too tired to clean when I actually want to. Our apartment is small and easily cluttered. Neither of us is good at putting things right away. It bothers me more than it does Phil, which of course, means it's up to me to keep it clean. I can't relax in a messy apartment. I want 1 or 2 full days off, paid of course, to thoroughly clean the apartment. It is driving me crazy.
I kind of long for the Richmond days of 5-minute commutes to work, a 50-75% bigger apartment and 50% lower rent. For friends who want to hang out and welcome you into their homes. For tennis partners or running partners. For really good barbecue.
What do I get here? A really low carbon footprint (no car). Endless amazing restaurants. Endless activities to enjoy, like concerts, museums, art, movies, shows, etc (but I can't afford most of them!). I also get an awesome job that I'm really enjoying. I work adjacent to Carnegie Hall and down the street from Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Opera. I soon will have my own Met Opera Manager's backstage pass! If only I enjoyed opera, but that's another story.
I'm tired. |

| | curious | ] | I work with about 50 people at my office. Almost everyone is so nice. But there is this one woman who, right from the start, I wasn't sure what to make of. The impression I'm getting is she has decided she doesn't like me. Yes, I could be wrong, and maybe that's the way she is with everyone, but if I'm right, I know that I haven't done anything to deserve it.
Today I rode the elevator up to our office with her. I smiled, held the office door for her, whatever. Even though I suspect she doesn't like me I don't reciprocate the negativity; I act my normal friendly self. When we arrive at the office we sign in with the time. As is the custom at my office, if you walk in with people in the morning, you sign them in too, if you are first. So I told this woman I'd sign her in. Her response wasn't "thank you" or "no thank you" but rather a sound of some sort, a sound that indicated she'd rather I not sign her in. So I didn't. I signed myself in and went to my desk. A few minutes later I returned to the reception area because I had a suspicion, and I was right. I checked her sign-in and she logged herself as arriving 20 minutes earlier than she actually had (I logged in at 9:32, she at 9:10).
I don't think she knows I went back and looked at her sign-in time. But I do think she probably realizes I might be wondering why she wouldn't want me to sign her in. The mature thing to do is for me to not tell anyone, right? Let her "steal" company time? I mean we're all a little guilty of that every time we check personal email, or post to livejournal;-). But she's so blatant about it. I guess that doesn't matter. Even if I were to write an anonymous note to HR saying people were signing in earlier than they were arriving, she'd know it was me. And it's not worth the drama/tension.
I would never blackmail her but it's fun to think about. It reminds me of the Rory/Paris situation on Gilmore Girls, when Rory found out Paris took her own cousin to the dance. Rory did not tell anyone, but Paris assumed she would. Not that this coworker is assuming I would. So maybe this isn't at all similar; I've just been watching GG lately.
I will see if she leaves 20 minutes early today. If so, then I know that's why she lied with her sign-in.

Yesterday Phil and I turned on the oven for the first time in order to heat up a frozen pizza. But after a couple minutes, some smoke started to come up through the range. We turned on the exhaust fan and figured this would be minor and just due to not being used in a long time. But no, the smoke continued and increased. We opened windows and I tried to fan the smoke away from the detector. Finally Phil thought to look in the drawer under the oven (the broiler?) and sure enough, something was on fire! It looked like paper and we scrambled to find something to put it into. I handed Phil a plastic bag. Not such a great idea. As Phil exited the building the bag also caught on fire and ashes started to fall on the floor. He finally got the stuff outside and stomped on it. But there was more paper on fire inside the oven drawer. Phil remembered the apartment came with a fire extinguisher but neither of us had ever used one. I remembered being taught that you had to pull the pin out and from there it's pretty easy. So Phil extinguished the fire and we had quite the mess to clean. Thank goodness for Phil and the extinguisher. I don't know what I would have done if I'd been alone. Now to get our extinguisher refilled... Posted via LiveJournal.app.
Oh, by the way, the manual to the oven/range is what caught on fire. |

| | content | ] | Wow, it's been far too long. I must admit, Facebook has taken over my interest, and livejournal has been put on the back burner. I think all of you who are on here are also on facebook, so whatever.
Phil and I are moving to Brooklyn at the end of the month! We were able to negotiate the rent on a lovely 1 bedroom in Clinton Hill. It has new kitchen appliances including a dishwasher, laundry in the building, video intercom, and ceiling fans with remotes! Downside? No closets. Not one! The bedroom comes with two armoires for clothes, and the kitchen has quite a bit of cabinetry, even ones I can't reach.
Because of this lack of storage space we have the daunting task of culling our possessions. I myself have very few possessions having moved 4 times in 15 months. But Phil's been living in the same apartment for almost 6 years and has a lot of stuff. In fact, he has an enormous walk-in closet full of stuff (and my barely-used queen-sized mattress and boxspring - anyone want it? $600 OBO). There's pretty much no place to put any of it. So I'm not sure what we're going to do.
Work is good. Time goes by faster at this job, which I think means I have more to do and I'm way less bored. It's better pay, better benefits. It all worked out for the best.
People are having babies left and right. It's freaking me out.
I have lots of floaters in my eyes. I need to go to an eye doctor. I have vision insurance!
I've been gaining weight again. What else is new?
Off to make quiche, if I can find a lard-free pie crust. |

Last night Phil beat me in Scrabble for the third time in a row. I'm proud of him but disappointed in me. I have to remember that he's learned a lot about the game since he's met me. |
