Hey, do any of you know of any free software to permanently remove files from your computer? All the files that I empty from my recycle bin are still somewhere on my computer and now I have no space. I need to find out how to remove these. Thanks! | | Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 | 11:12 am [shadohrt]

Samba Config Problem - why does one work and the other not?
I have two different samba shares configured. Can someone PLEASE tell me my one works exactly as expected (e.g. limits access to the requisite group and give them complete access) while the other one allows EVERYONE view privileges and no one has write/modify privs? I am sure I missed something stupid.... but I am too tired to figure it out if I did. ( The configsCollapse ) | | Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 | 12:14 am [twentysixkeys]

Hey guys. I'm having a problem with Photoshop Elements 5.0 and can't find any resources on it. I'm trying to make an animated .gif file. I've made them before. I usually click ' Window' on the menu bar, which leads to a drop-down menu. On said menu I then click ' Animation'. The only problem is, today, when I clicked ' Window', the drop-down menu appeared minus the ' Animation' option. I have no idea how to get it back, or where it's gone. Has anyone else encountered this problem? The Adobe help pages offered me no help. Current Mood: confused | | Friday, August 15th, 2008 | 9:25 am [shadohrt]

IE Issue
I've Cross-Posted this a number of places - sorry if you are an unfortunate soul that encounters it more than once. The system is running XP Pro. The affected browser is IE7. No other connectivity items are affected: ping tests are fine, firefox browses fine, email transmission and retrieval are both fine. The Problem: IE is slow - VERY slow - to start loading pages. Once they begin to load, they load quickly and fine, but the initial response is so slow that some sites (including the one the user needs the most) sometimes time out rather than load at all. Duration of the problem: it began last Thursday while I was away on vacation. Attempted solutions: my part-time coworker ran some anti-malware scanners and found nothing. Upon my return I, too, ran a series of anti-spyware utils and found nothing. I cleared out 185MB of temporary internet files. I am pretty sure the solution is something obvious that I have just overlooked while trying to catch up on the 7 business days of work that piled up while I was out for vacation. But, the sooner I fix it the better for my user - help? | | Thursday, June 19th, 2008 | 2:07 pm [gojobs] |
Well, I noticed that the goal of your journal is to “discuss anything pc-related”- I am going to assume that also means websites and Internet…Stuff. I work for a company called GoJobs.com, and we are undergoing a site redesign, the goal of which is to drive more job seekers to the proper pages. We are looking for feedback on the page layout, useability, content, etc. If you wouldn’t mind, check out this page: http://gojobs.com/help-desk-jobs.html (heck, you might even find a fun help-desk job!) and leave some feedback here. Thank you for reading and (hopefully) leaving feedback! | | Sunday, October 21st, 2007 | 1:46 am [giwu]

Wireless question
I recently switched internet providers, from Comcast cable to Verizon "FIOS" broadband, which comes with wireless capability (which I'v never had before). So, I bought a Linksys wireless adapter, and everything was working perfectly for about 4 days. I had a strong signal, and it was actually a little bit faster than Comcast. Then, it just stopped working. When I looked at the Linksys wireless monitor screen, it would always say something like "You are connected to the access point, but the internet cannot be found"--despite the fact that the little wireless icon on my system tray constantly said that I had a "good" signal and was connected at a speed of 24mbps. This morning, after about 3 days of no internet, I'm finally able to connect. It still says I have a good signal and 24mbps, but it's going unbelievably slow. I'm talking slower than dial-up. Even a Livejournal page with no pictures takes forever to load, and watching YouTube videos is conpletely out of the question. Does anyone know what the problem might be? No one I know who has wireless has ever heard of anything like this happening. I'm assuming it's a problem with the wireless card and not the Verizon service, since my two roommates are connected via old-fashioned wires and haven't had any trouble at all. So, did I waste $50 on a crappy wireless card, or what? The fact that it worked perfectly for a few days is the most confusing part to me. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated. | | Sunday, September 2nd, 2007 | 4:04 pm [sgcharbor]

Here's an interesting one
The Facts: OS: Vista Ultimate Outlook 2007 Gmail account (333 messages total in gmail online box, earlies to of which is 7/21/07) MSN Account - dangerously full The problem: Out-bound email was always forwarding to both the user's blackberry and his iPhone. So he poked around with settings. Outlook stopped being able to receive ANY email. I blew away the settings and re-set them up, correctly.. Now Outlook keeps downloading 413 new messages. The SAME 413 new messages... over and over and over again. I thought, perhaps, this was a combination of MSN and gmail, so I removed the MSN account... and it is STILL downloading the same 413 messages. Note - only 333 messages even in the gmail account according to gmail. And wait, there's more! The newest message being downloaded is older than the oldest message in the gmail account. Anyone have ANY idea what is going on here? x-posted | | Monday, August 13th, 2007 | 9:31 am [roamingintaiwan]

Mouses (mice?)
Like many people, I work on the computer all day and my wrist is really starting to bother me. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a store which sells ergonomic mouses (mice?). I googled it and was overwhelmed with design possibilities ranging from a Stylus to a vertical mouse to a foot peddled control. Does anyone no of a store in the GTA which caters to these types of items? Does anyone have any of these items? I'd love to hear some first hand accounts before I go blow a tonne of cash. Thanks in advance for any info! | | Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 | 11:47 am [runningawayy] |
photoshop closes when trying to open folder
I use Photoshop 7. Whenever I download a new texture imagepack, and then try to open the folder in PS, PS just closes. The window/program closes. I double-click (or click 'open') and Photoshop closes. I open the program again, try to open the folder, but it does the same thing. It's like trying to open a folder and hitting the 'x' to close out the program are suddenly the same thing. Any help would be appreciated! :) x-posted. | | Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 | 10:44 pm [thefour_winds]

Vista compatibility
Im going the PC route for the first time (Im a lifetime apple-user and switching out of necessities involving school) and I'm thinking of getting some old PC software (Sim stuff, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, etc) and I was wondering if there will be compatibility issues since some of that is so old? I've never really used PC's and don't want to drop a bunch of money on software that won't work. Basically: Will old software (98, XP, etc compatible) work on Vista? Will I have to install anything special to run them? | | Saturday, July 28th, 2007 | 7:00 pm [rockstargrrl]

Building a new PC
So I'm about to sound really pathetic. but i'm new here, and there's a reason i joined (a/e/b my computer): Intel SE440BX motherboard (P2 with 450 mHz processor) 384 MB RAM OS: Win XP Pro SP 2 (oh yes it's running) 20GB C drive, 80GB second drive 52x CD Rom drive 52/32/52 DVD-ROM Drive (which is a burner I think) I also have a Sony external DVD/CD burner So I know that my PC is laughably pathetic. But she's been good to me, and I'm not a hardcore gamer or anything like that. I have a lot of drives and such that I'd like to keep using, because I know they're fine. But clearly I need a system upgrade. I'd like to rebuild a pc from scratch - and I would like to start using it for more media. In particular, I'm a therapist and so burning copies of sessions from video cameras (I have a Hi8 cam) onto DVD would be nice. I also have a large music collection (1200+ cds) and am considering backing up all of my music onto hard disk space. Other than that, basic office applications, some internet/email stuff. Some digital imaging. But I'm pretty low-key with my computer, I don't need it to do a lot really. I realize that I need a stronger video card to do some of the multimedia stuff, and there's so many types of processors out there I'm just not sure which route to go. I'm thinking it'd be cheaper to build my own since I sort of know how, but my drives are all ATAPI (I think?) Would I have to start clean with all new memory as well? Recommendations for products...specifically types of motherboard, video support, as well as level of power supply? Also, what's the best way to go about this? I won't have a lump sum up front to buy parts, but I'd like to start accumulating what I need. Given that it could take a while (probably a year at most) to buy a system, what's best to leave towards the end because of upgrades and the like? Any info is helpful, thanks. alright, that's it... i give. given my current workload, and wanting actually get outside and enjoy the summer, i simply don't want to spend time giving full frontal nerdity to my personal gaming PC trying to figure out what the smeg is wrong this time... so i'm looking to buy a decent (not top of the line) SLI capable pre-built gaming rig from somewhere... because if there's anything i'm good at, it's harassing vendors over in-warranty repairs. does anyone have any suggestions? i'd prefer to have a dual-sli system, but really, as long as i can shoot headcrabs, that's all i really care about. :) | | Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 | 11:18 pm [definitelyme]

Sound problem
Alright I will try not to be confusing.. I am having a HUGE problem with sound/video on my computer. It skips & sounds distorted during windows startup and also during the first few seconds of playing a new song on itunes. Also sounds distorted when I get random sounds from IM's or websites. On streaming video sites like youtube, the video will sometimes(almost all the time) run in slow motion as will the sound. If the sound is distorted, the video will run in slow motion. Sometimes the video will run fine but the sound will still skip. Things that I have done to try to fix it: -Going to gateway.com and downloading a sound driver update (didn't work) -pushing ctrl, alt, delete to try and close down some processes after suggestion by geek squad member at Best Buy who told me that I should only have 30-40 processes working at one time. I had 43 but besides explorer, aim, and itunes, nothing else was taking up a lot of space. It's a 2005 gateway laptop 6510gz but it has had to be sent away to the best buy service center for the following problems: 1st- had to have the power adapter replaced has it stopped powering my computer 2nd- had to replace the LCD monitor & also had the motherboard replaced 3rd- had to replace the LCD monitor once again and also had to replace the motherboard, once again 4th- had the fan, power adapter, and battery replaced -I have an extended warranty but it will not cover software problems so I'm left to try and fix this sound problem by myself although it has been in ongoing problem for the last year. I do not remember if it happened all at once or if it was gradual. | 12:40 pm [shadohrt]

Driver Issue
OK, Here's the scoop. One of my users had a computer. The PSU blew and took the MB with it (for whatever reason). I do not have the parts kicking around to replace these so I went and grabbed the cheapest machine I could from the nearby Best Buy to get a machine back up and running as quickly as possible. The problem is that the machine had Vista on it. The user has applications that are needed that do not yet have Vista versions and the XP versions do not run right in Vista. The machine I bought has XP drivers on the eMachines website, but they do not work. Changing OSs is not supported by eMachines support. (why do they provide XP driers, expecially ones that do not work?) I used the Belarc System Advisor to get the part number of the MB and then went to the manufacturer's website to see if they have XP drivers. They do not, Vista only. The part number is mcp61pm2ma and it claims the manufacturer is Gateway. Anyone know where I can get drivers for this board for XP? | | Monday, July 23rd, 2007 | 1:19 pm [shadohrt]

Any using (or supporting) a property management software package titled "Skyline" by Anton Systems, Inc? I have a couple of issues that I am trying to figure out (have a work-around) but do not have enough experience to know what is really going on. Their technical support is too expensive for these minor problems. Thanks. | | Thursday, July 12th, 2007 | 10:53 am [shadohrt]

I was presented with a laptop that had been partitioned (supposedly by the manufacturer) in a very odd manner: 15GB C drive, 54GB D drive and the remainder of the 80GB drive as unpartitioned space. I needed to install a piece of software that has a minimum requirement of 20GB. This requirement included the estimated database size that would, ultimately, be user-generated. Obviously, 20GB is not available on a 15GB partition. So, I used Acronis to image all the partitions on the drive and then I re-partioned the drive to a single volume. When I restore the image from the original C partition to the new C partition everything goes fine. I set the new partition to be the active partition (e.g. boot-able) and all the data appears to get restored fine. Except for one issue, after re-booting, it will not boot. It claims it cannot boot the to partition and that my hardware configuration is wrong. After trying this a few time with various different settings all recieving the same result I thought about doing a "dirty" restore. So I did. I installed a clean version of windows (XP Pro) to the disk and then I did a restore over the windows directory. At first glimpse, this worked.... but it has different issues. All the data and settings seemed to carry over but my wireless settings are not correct (in fact the services associated with them are not even running) and a program that uses audio will also not run. I am also having issues with the user-content synchronization with the server (even on the wired network, which works even though I cannot get to the settings). I know I should have written down the exact boot error message, but I figured I would be able to solve the issue.... Anyone have any thoughts? I really do not want to have to manually restore all the files and install all the programs from scratch unless I absolutely have to. Thanks! |
