This initial release allowed early adopters to start experimenting with the AI art generator several months before the company was officially incorporated[1].

V5.2 is the latest Midjourney model

Midjourney V5.2 was released in March 2023, just three months after V5 and only a month and a half after the incremental V5.1 update. With rapid iteration, Midjourney continues to improve image quality and user control with each new version[2].

How many users does Midjourney have?

Midjourney has 16.4 million users

As of November 2023, Midjourney has accumulated over 16 million total users, with between 1.2 and 2.5 million daily active users. After explosive early growth in 2022, Midjourney’s growth rate has slowed in recent months, likely due to increasing competition from new AI art generators.

In May of 2023, Midjourney had over 14.9 million users, and by August, this number had grown to only around 16 million. This suggests that Midjourney may be facing some challenges in maintaining its growth trajectory.

Midjourney gains 23,000 users daily

In November 2023, Midjourney averages around 23,000 new users per day. This daily gain has decreased from around 90,000 new users per day earlier in 2022, indicating slowing momentum. However, with over 16 million users already on the platform, Midjourney remains one of the largest AI art communities.

Two thirds of users actively engage with Midjourney

According to a poll, 67.7% of Midjourney users reported engaging with the platform “very often” or “often.” Only around 10% said they use Midjourney “rarely” or “occasionally.” This suggests Midjourney has been successful at encouraging participation among its user base.

Midjourney’s subreddit has nearly 1 million members

As a platform for Midjourney users to interact, Midjourney’s subreddit has grown quickly to around 939,000 members. However, engagement has decreased recently, with only around 70 posts and 200 comments per day, down from over 400 posts and 4,000 comments at its peak activity[3].

Midjourney tops 300,000 Twitter followers

On Twitter, Midjourney’s account surpassed 300,000 followers in October 2023. Social media provides another way for Midjourney to connect with users outside of its core Discord community.

The largest portion of Midjourney’s user base comes from the US, making up 17.09% of total users. Other top countries are Brazil (4.75%), India (4.65%), the UK (4.24%), and Germany (4.01%)[4].

Around 59% of Midjourney users are male

Per analytics, 59% of Midjourney users are male[4]. The average user age is 35, with over 60% under 35. This points to strong engagement among younger male demographics.

Half of users use Discord for Midjourney only

In a poll, 50% of Midjourney users said they use Discord only for Midjourney and not other servers. This highlights Midjourney’s ability to draw in new users interested in AI-generated art.

Midjourney has earned an estimated $250+ million through subscriptions since introducing paid plans in December 2022. This revenue scale demonstrates a strong demand for Midjourney’s AI art capabilities.

According to founder David Holz, Midjourney became profitable in August 2022, just months after launching. As a self-funded startup, Midjourney was able to pivot to profitability through subscriptions without reliance on external funding.

80% of users get a paid membership within a week of joining the Midjourney server

Almost 4/5 of users who do pay for Midjourney got a paid Midjourney membership within a week of joining the Midjourney Discord server, and 41.8% got it the same day. 10.1% got it within the first month, and 3.7% waited longer than 3 months.

Midjourney completes 20 to 40 jobs per second

Around 20 to 40 jobs are submitted every second through Midjourney’s Discord server. As a result, we estimate that at least 600 million jobs have been completed until now, although the number could be as high as 1 billion. In May, we estimated this number to be 300 million.

Only about 20% of people use Midjourney for “art therapy”

Holz estimates that about 20% of people use Midjourney to recreate images that help them cope, such as creating dog images after their dog has died.

Each image takes several petaops (1015 ) to complete

To explain, petaops refers to 10 to the power of 15 operations (not to be confused by “petaflops”). Holz says that while he doesn’t know whether an image takes 5, 10, or 50 petaops, it’s in that ballpark. And if 10 million people wanted to use Midjourney [at the same time], there wouldn’t be enough online servers.

Most users prioritize control over accuracy

When polled, nearly two-thirds of Midjourney users said control (64.8%) over the image generation process was most important to them, rather than technical accuracy (24.1%) or beauty (11.1%). This suggests that Midjourney has succeeded in giving users creative flexibility with its AI art tools.
