I know I could test this fairly easily, but I'm at work where PHP is banned as the devil spawn. *sigh*
There's the wonder full or die() statement that normally goes on the end of database connections. Does 'or' only work with 'die' and 'exit' or could you use an or echo 'stuff' or or myfunction();?
