phpbb & modules

Has anyone here worked with phpbb before? I want to have a picture posting gallery section on a site, kind of like that imagebucket website where people can post their pictures for free, except I want it tied in to a message board and an about me page kind of like eBay's about me page. Someone suggested I use phpbb and get modules for it and then edit them. I am just wondering if this is the easiest way to do what I need to do or if anyone has a better suggestion (such as coding it myself)
