Image question

This may sound like a really dumb question but, I've been thinking and looking for a way to do this. What I'm looking to do is dynamically create a thumbnail of a random picture in a directory on the server. I also want to be able to call the php file as the source of the image. Is this possible? If so, can someone help me out here? Thanks everyone.
