Sites with PHP

Hey guys. New member here; I was impressed by how active the group is.

Anyway, here's my thoughts: I've become pretty good with throwing together PHP/MySQL sites, ones that only I see, so the code doesn't have to be perfect. However, to develop sites for freelancing or as a job, I'd like to learn how to take my coding to the next level and see how the "pros" do it. I've started to try and find some PHP open-source projects to start picking apart the code; I tried WordPress, but it seems like a pretty huge project and I got lost quickly. I'd like to find a professional-grade project where I can look at the code and try to learn how they're doing what they're doing. There's a lot that I need to learn...for instance, WordPress uses a pretty cool class for its database and has some useful functions; this is probably common knowledge in the developer community, but it was new to me.

Does anyone have examples of good, yet smaller, projects that I can look at and learn from? Thanks!
