Files in MySQL

I've heard that you can actually insert files like graphics into a MySQL database. I've always been curious about how to do this, but I've never given it more than an hour's consideration. How do you insert something like a graphic into a database, and then how do you extract it -- both to disk and directly to the Web browser?
