Where there was once a stereotype to the words “career center,” PLCC proves otherwise by providing the skill sets, technical expertise, and field knowledge needed for career and college entrance. At PLCC, students don’t just prepare for the future—they experience it. Through hands-on training, cutting-edge labs, and real-world learning, we equip high school and adult learners with the tools to lead in today’s workforce or thrive in college. From healthcare to welding, digital design to criminal justice, our programs are designed with industry in mind—offering credentials, certifications, and confidence. At PLCC, we believe in extraordinary experiences that help every student discover their passion and design their future.
On August 29, 1974, the citizens of Coventry, Green and Manchester School Districts approved a levy that would provide the money to build and operate a school to provide vocational education training for people living in the community. The school was named Portage Lakes Joint Vocational School. In 1989, the name was changed to Portage Lakes Career Center.
A 47-acre site on Shriver Road in Green Township was purchased on May 12, 1975, and the building was completed by August 1, 1977. The original building was 118,000 square feet and included 15 classrooms and 15 skills area, a large group instructional area, a library/media center, a reading/math lab, a computer lab, and an Adult Education Center.
In November 1991, the Career Center’s Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to enlarge the Portage Lakes Joint Vocational School District to include the secondary vocational education programs at Springfield High School. The inclusion of Springfield’s programs took effect in July 1992. Under the merger, Springfield became a satellite facility of the Career Center.
In November of 2009, the Career Center broke ground to add an additional 11,540 square foot Health Technology Wing. Building on this legacy, PLCC received $6.5 million in state funding in November 2023, complemented by nearly $2 million in district funds, to construct a new, 16,280-square-foot dental assisting facility and enhance programs in phlebotomy and welding. The new facility opened in October 2024.
