3:15 pm - Poopee New Year!
|
|
Hello 2010! It's crazy but this is already the 10th year of the new millennium. It feels like 1999 going on Y2K all over again, only with less things to look forward to. And I don't think we've progressed very much. If you compare where we are now with some of the movies released in the last two decades set in 2010, nothing much has changed. People still drive cars on roads, breathe air, walk, eat, drink, gym, have sex physically; pavements are still made of cement; hairstyles in vogue occillate randomly between short and long hair/colored and non-colored; robots do not patrol the streets; the furthest we ever stepped foot on was the moon... I think it's still gonna be the same the next 10 years down the road. Humans tend to be visionaries, imagining innovations more than actually constructing them, and in reality our civilisation seems to have peaked.
Anyway, I decided to do a new year track after getting myself enrolled to guitar lessons (and 3 years of not helming any songs). Was trying to do this as "live" as possible, but I totally sucked at it. Basically, I an INCAPABLE of playing and singing at the same time, so I've got to record the music first (countless times even though it's only 3 notes; left hand showing symptoms of arthritis; fingertips crusted), then the vocals (just get it through, since "live" has got to have mistakes/jarring moments). I think it's got to do with how my brain is wired - it's just not engineered to multi-task. *sigh*... And then I've got to refrain from adding keyboard strings which I really like.
The night is gonna leave The two of us in this mistake My heart is on my sleeve It's beatin' with each breath you take
I've never wanted to be me I've never wanted to agree But I can't help myself I never wanna be this way
You wouldn't leave his side It could've been so wrong But I can't make things right (no, I can't make things right) The feelings with you last so long
I've never wanted to be me I've never wanted to agree But I can't help myself I never wanna be this way I wish you'd never have to choose I wish I'd never have to lose But I can't save myself I never wanna be this way
I never wanna be this way I never wanna be like this I never wanna be this way I never wanna be...
I've never wanted to be me I've never wanted to agree But I can't help myself I never wanna be this way I wish you'd never have to choose I wish I'd never have to lose But I can't save myself I never wanna be this way
Oh baby - no, no Oh baby - please...
Don't wanna be this way No, no, no, wish I could make you stay I never wanna be this way Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Don't wanna be this way No, no, no, wish I could make you stay I never wanna be this way Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
Don't wanna be this way No, no, no, wish I could make you stay I never wanna be this way Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

5:19 pm - A Poopee Christmas
|
My gifts to colleagues this year came in a kaleidoscope of colours packed in little see-through bags. 60 packets of assorted mouth-sized confectioneries, comprising pieces of my favourite supermarket chocolates - Meiji Porte, MeltyKiss (Creamy Chocolate, Caramelised Almond, Fruity Strawberry and Dark Rum flavours), Baci, Ferrero Rondnoir, Macadamia Roca (limited edition stuff), Almond Roca and Meiji Chocolate bricks (Black and Strawberry flavours). I assembled them over 3 nights, topping up with more Portes, Meltykisses and Ferrero Rondnoirs on the 2nd day's purchase, during which I realised how hot Macadamia Rocas were - they were completely out of stock at several Watson's stores.
Nothing captures the look of winter in sweltering Singapore than a Christmas tree emblazoned with bluish-white LED lights.

An over-hyped log cake from Bakerzin. Sadly, I've seen and tasted better.

|
Playing the guitar is so damn hard Its inventor must've been such a retard Gotta gnarl my fingers beyond repair Till they're like those of Linda Blair
My fingers often missed a string My strums and plucks went out of sync I fumbled and pressed on the wrong fret God, C just doesn't sound like that
I couldn't change the freaking chord In time for the next bloody contort And when I finally found the strings I missed a bar and damn that shingz!
Hell, my fingertips are starting to peel And hardened like they're made of steel Think I'd rather pay some money To someone to play this damn thing for me!

2:29 am - DnD
|
I was invited to this "Social Media Immersion Programme" by IDA and couldn't help feeling strange about, and actually a bit disgusted by it.
Session 1: Pictures of success Provides examples of organisations which have effectively used social media and the resultant benefits. Session 2. Tools of the trade Provides an overview of social media tools such as blogs, discussion forums, podcasts, videos, social networks, Twitter, search engine optimisation. Session 3. How to create a thriving online community Covers issues such as how to spread the word about a community, how to engage users, how to deal with spammers and bad behaviour. Session 4. How social media fits in with the rest of an organisation's public communications Explains how to best use social media as one part of an organisation's outreach and engagement efforts
It's as if the online community is being studied and scrutinised like lab rats by old world marketeers eager to jump on the new media bandwagon thinking they could *still* surreptitiously have a slice of the cheese.
Isn't it like too late now?
This year, I got myself an outfit for DnD. Theme is Fairy Tale, though it's Halloween. Initially wanted Tin Man, but the costume was obviously for some robot. The Shrek overalls made me look like Ninja Turtle. So I finally settled for the Steadfast Tin Soldier, though I couldn't get a top with the English cross. Some colleagues got dressed as vampires and ghouls so they could off head off for Halloween parties later, but they could pass off as fairy tale villains anyhow.

1:35 am - 731
|
Stumbled across this 1988 HK movie on barbarous biological experiments executed in 1930s Manchuria by the Imperial Japanese Army, and started reading up on all that wicked history, all over again.
"Men Behind The Sun" (黑太陽731) had some of the revolting, bloody realism that made "Cannibal Holocaust" a banned film in the 70s. The disturbing scenes left me fascinated, yet distressed and torched at the same time. I was munching on my cereal bar while watching this clip, and had to gorge it down fast before I lose my appetite.
I then engaged in this YouTube "war" with a Japanese/someone living in Japan:
poopeeeeks (2 days ago): Was this what it was taught in Japan? Outside the archipelago, everyone knows Unit 731 is wartime Japan's human experimentation unit aimed at devising biological weapons.
In Japan, kids were taught that WWII was Japan's way of freeing Asians from their colonial masters. How true could that be if Japan was the only country that thought it was saviour of Asia at that time? Seriously, the Japanese has been make-believing their history right from the start. I mean wtf is Jimmu Tenno??
bystanderTokyo (1 day ago): Don't talk "everyone" when obviously you don't.
The official name of the unit 731 is the Kempeitai Political Department and Epidemic Prevention Research Laboratory. It was one of the water-purification labs to protect the soldiers from the bacteria-rich water condition prevalent in China and Manchuria.
poopeeeeks (1 day ago): Unit 731's official name is simply a cover-up. Why the hell would you need such a huge place - 70+ blocks to do water purification? And what are 2 blocks of prisons for? Lock up researchers? And what's a huge incinerator doing in a water purification plant? Burn water?
During those years, bacteria-rich conditions happen in most places, including Japan. And cholera outbreaks are most common in equatorial/tropical countries.
Why didn't IJA helm a water purification plant in Singapore/M'sia??
bystanderTokyo (18 hours ago): Traditionally China has had the worst water condition in Asia. The other purpose of the units was to provide the purified water for the rice farming which was essential to increase the vocational opportunities in Manchuria. Japan did the same in Taiwan as well. Singapore? Malaysia? Those had long been the Brithsh colonies. What the hell are you talking about?
poopeeeeks (47 minutes ago): It's already been established by both Chinese and Westerners that Unit 731 is no water purification unit. So really, the Japanese should stop concocting myths and legends and come to terms with cold, hard history.
Japan ruled Singapore from 1942-1945. The economy of Singapore collapsed and inflation shot sky-high. That's proof that Japan is incapable of ruling countries. Just stick to the volcanic islands, make cars for the world and enjoy being the world's 2nd largest economy while it lasts.
poopeeeeks (1 day ago): Japan could rule China - after all the Machus ruled China for >200 years - if the Meiji era hadn't given way to Showa, and the dumb Showa Emperor hadn't been foolishly led by young, imbecile military officers. IJA knew nothing about ruling a country, let alone decolonialising Asia - all they wanna do is loot and plunder selfishly for the Home Islands.
Difference between the Japanese and Manchus is, the Manchus assimilate, while the Japanese annihilate. End result? Disobedience and dissent.
bystanderTokyo (18 hours ago): You must have read too much comic books. Whether Japan could rule China or not is not the issue since the former had no such intention in the first place. It was Britain and other Western nations, which tried to colonize China, not Japan.
poopeeeeks (32 minutes ago): You must have read too many fairy tales in Japan, such as the Atarashii Reshiki Kyoukashou. Then again, perhaps you're right - colonialisation is not Japan's forte. All Japan did was to occupy, loot, plunder and rape, from Korea all the way to the Pacific islands. It did not set up any credible legislation or system of government in those countries. Neither did lives improve by any signficant measure. How much of a failure is that?
Oh well, I guess I could've been a historian lol...

1:43 am - 10K!
|
And so the Dow has finally crossed 10,000 confidently - the first time it's done so since more than a year ago.
So what's next? The markets will probably continue to head upwards to 10,300-10,400 and form a peak over the next few days, and an end-Oct correction seems increasingly likely now. Dow was largely unscathed since the bull rally started in Mar, with only minor corrections along the way.
Then again, even if it corrects again to 9,000+ levels, it's gonna be another good time to buy in Nov-Dec... and then markets should prepare to take off again, this time to 11,000+ levels by 1Q2010!

2:00 am - WinDow

I made good my promise to keep the blinds open once I got a window seat. My two window panels are about the only panels whose blinds are rolled up most of the day - makes me wonder why colleagues with window seats just had to keep them down. It's like, why bother sitting near the windows when you dread the sun and don't enjoy the view? It gets hot sometimes, but it doesn't get sweltering. And seriously, anything for a million-dollar view. The construction site below is quite an eyesore though ;)
Go on Dow - head for 9,600.

3:30 am - Evolved
|
It's inexplicable why I haven't been updating LJ. I just stopped one day in 2007. What started out as a planned hiatus became a permanent deconstruction of my blogging lifestyle, as procrastination led to more procrastination, to the point where it became unnecessary and ridiculous to post anything anymore.
It's as if gradually I decided that my attention seeking phase is over. Or perhaps I now seek attention elsewhere. Like FB.
But after a while, I, too, have abandoned FB. I no longer add or accept friend requests. It's sad. There are like hundreds of friend and stranger requests but I am too lazy to even click the delete button. And while I do logon occasionally to view friend updates and play a game or two, I hardly ever interact. I feel like I'm living in isolation, devoid of communication, in a world of friends I barely know. Solitary and distant, yet pretty comfortable where I am.
I think I now belong to the cloud of anonymity and virtual non-existence that makes up 99.99% of Internet users. Amid the clutter of celebrity bloggers, vloggers and youtube stars, I have become a nameless, faceless netizen pandering to the ego of others.
I used to snap and post pictures so often in the past with my trusty camera. Food on the table seemed so bloggable. Night-outs with friends were never complete without photo uploads. And comments, oh, those comments, they swelled my ego. But these days, I derive more pleasure looking at other people's pictures and videos. I guess that's what happens when you progress through the Internet years, wrinkling and aging with the aeons as new faces, places and technocrazes sprout.
And then when you find yourself being slammed with new terms like "PWNED" and "OWNED" when you really only know "WTF" and "OMFG", you know it's time for you to take the back-seat and spend your remaining years in cyber retirement.
Such is the evolution of life on the Internet. Everyone eventually becomes a voyeur when you lose all ability to amaze, attract and assail. And that's when you find yourself e-jaculating to the stars of tomorrow.

4:05 am - Shanghai Surprise!
|
It's almost a year since the Shanghai market peaked at 6,000+. Today, SSE is a few points shy of 2,300. In just one year, the SSE has corrected 60% from its peak. And despite its still relatively strong growth, China has been in a bear market far worse and much longer than the US and Eurozone ever were this year, even as Western banks are the only ones crumbling into subprime shit.
Earlier this year, despite Jim Roger's repeated claims that there was no reason to sell Chinese stocks (and commodities, both of which sank anyway) as the plumetting SSE crashed through one thousand point floor after another, the Chinese govt just wasn't interested in propping up stocks. Each time stock exchange monitors in Shanghai glow a deathly green, some top official in Beijing would reiterate to the media that they're still not done raising rates, even as the Fed had been busy snipping them almost monthly since 4Q2007. Curbing skyrocketing inflation had been the Chinese govt's top priority.
Now, the reality of sluggish growth worldwide has hit China, and full-year growth estimates have been revised downwards. With inflation rates now fallen to a comfortable range, the govt has started shifting its focus back on growth. Quite impressively, the SSE rebounded from the abyssal 1,800 levels hit earlier this month to end September above the critical 2,000 mark.
This week, mainland Chinese markets are closed for the National Day holidays. And we will soon see the anniversary of SSE's record peak coming to pass. Over the past months, the Chinese govt has pretty much ignored the plight of countless stock investors who poured in their life savings to a market that for two years looked like an FD with 100% returns p.a. But that has all begun to change. Just 2 weeks ago, Beijing's actions have suggested that its officials are done with rate hikes. Stamp duty for stock purchases were cut, bank lending quotas reduced and yuan gains curbed. It seems like the govt's finally kickstarting a loosening of its tight monetary policy.
The Chinese market rebound is way overdue, and this time with the govt's invisible hand we'll probably see some real catipulation happening in Oct. After months of dismay and shaken confidence, we'd likely see SSE rocket past 3,000 once again. Though not much to celebrate over since that in itself is still 50% off last Oct's summit, it's still a respectable attainment in Chinese terms, given that the SSE, amid the economy's blistering growth, was like dead fish before 2005.
And if SSE still fails to rally even with Beijing's intervention, we're dead meat.
In any case, to the civilisation that made melamine and ethylene glycol household names, Happy 59th National Day!

Loved how the song built up to a climax (the AH AH AH AH), and the resonating guitar riff at the end... I was Primary 2 then!
Happy Good Friday to all!
This was the last song I wrote - almost 2 years ago - originally meant to be a Good Friday song - "Eloi, Eloi, Lema Sabachtani" was uttered by Jesus before he died for mankind on the cross...

Banks really cheebye. Give pathetic interest, mismanage debts and make so much losses, still give incredible bonuses to staff. And when trouble happens, they sell stakes in companies and our stocks crumble. And what do they get in the end? Bail out! From Temasek using tax-payers' money!
