Very Short (Vignette) These stories are usually only a few pages long (if that) and are generally just one or two scenes. They are brief glimpses into the lives of the characters. When printed these are generally less than 5 pages long.
Short (Short Story) These stories are whole stories (as opposed to the slice of life of a vignette) that are relatively short in length. They usually are not broken up into chapters and do not take very long to read. Usually, they cover only one line of a story, with few, if any, secondary characters, and no stories except for the main events. Often, when printed out, they are less than 20 pages long.
Medium (Novella) A novella is a much more involved story with secondary characters and can touch on a variety of themes within one story. Lengthwise, they are generally 20-100 pages long.
Long (Novel) These are very involved stories. Often they cannot be read in one sitting, but it is possible. There are very often many secondary characters, many themes, and fleshed out activities. Novels are generally (but not always) over 100 pages in length when printed out.
Very Long (Epic) These are the humongous novels, the ones that can only be read in one sitting if you have a whole day on your hands and love eye strain. They are often 200+ pages in length, cover either a long period of time in the characters' lives or deal with an "epic" event. There are often plenty of secondary characters that are well fleshed out, with stories of their own, as well as very developed main characters.
