Power?

I'd really like to know exactly how powerful python can get before i invest some time into learning it. Is it possible to interface with a GUI toolkit (gtk?), and write interesting applications (I knew at one point a fractal generator in C... not anymore though).

Any thoughts from some python users/developers here?
