Boy Oh Boy

Image Boy George has cost himself £36,000 by signing an 'autograph' for a 'fan' during a DJ appearance last weekend.

The ex-Culture Club singer thought he was giving a fan a memento after being approached as he span discs at Manchester's Essential club last Saturday, when he was infact being served with a statutory declaration by a solicitor disguised as a clubber.

A spokesperson for Levy's solicitors says, "He was gobsmacked. As soon as we said, 'You have been served with a statutory declaration, he went, 'Oh!' He could not understand it. He was gobsmacked.

"We have all got a job to do, one way or another, and this was the best way to do it. We had to get him at his weak moment."

The now "served" declaration means George must pay up £36,000 or be declared bankrupt, after he cancelled an appearance in America at short notice.

George - real name George O'Dowd - had been ordered to pay the sum in cash to Cheshire promoter Kasia Saleh, after she claimed the star's cancellation had caused the failure of her Club GAY USA event.

The writ isn't Geroge's only legal trouble at the moment, on Monday he was also charged with false imprisonment of a 28 year old man .

The Ultimate Crap

ImageImageImageImage
I've just downloaded and watched an episode of 'The Ultimate Fighter' produced by some U.S network but ultimate crap is the only way to describe it. It's a well worn format of contestant fights contestant but is riddled with corny cliches, macho bullshit and air head contestants / personal trainers.

It's upside of course is all that man on man action which kept me watching until the end of the show. Am I really that shallow to watch it again solely based on that and despite the rest? Ummm.........probably!

QEK Hits India

Image
ImageIt never ceases to amaze me, when looking through site stats', where visitors to QEK actually come from and the most bizarre internet searches that bring them here. Tonight was no exception and after checking out a particular Indian search engine, I discovered that QEK was mentioned in the Calcutta Telegraph back in January on a post about the lovely Mr. Becks:

"News that British soccer star David Beckham and wife Victoria will be crossing the Atlantic has attracted attention aplenty in bloggers’ park.

The free-kick king will quit Real Madrid at the end of the season and sign up with Los Angeles Galaxy.

For Leone (http://qek. blogspot. com), the move signals “semi retirement and footballing obscurity” for Beckham."

Ohhhh Winter Is Coming.........

Image
Image
Wentworth Miller of Prison Break Fame

It's getting into 'brass monkey' season again here and soon it will be time to get out the fur coat and snow shoes!

I'm sure that I suffer from SAD (Seasonally Affected Disorder) since I feel a real sense of doom when winter sets in. Having said that, I also think that this kind of new disorder is a highly convenient way for some of us to take a few days off work in the misguided belief that it's wholly legitimate. It's fairly obvious that most people are going to feel slightly less enthusiastic about entering out into the elements in the morning when it's cold and miserable than when the glorious sun is shining down. I didn't need an expert in mental health or the recognition of a new 'condition' to tell me that one.

I'm going to be adding to my seasonal misery next month when I mince back to the heat of South East Asia for a short trip only to have to return to Arctic conditions (slight exaggeration) in order to honor work commitments. I think I'm going to have to make a permanent move to a place where the sun always shines (as opposed to putting myself where the son don't shine!).

I'm still having problems with writers block both from a blogging and work perspective. I seem to be more interested in watching 'Prison Break'. You see, I made the fatal error of downloading episode 1, season 1, convincing myself that I'd just watch one or two episodes while I was at a 'loose end' one night. I should really have known my addictive personality a lot better than that. I'm now almost completely through the first season (after only a few days) and dreaming about Wentworth Miller.

Oh give me strength ...............................

Myanmar: Enough is Enough.

Having recently visited Myanmar (fortunately outside the trouble zones), I have witnessed the kind and generous nature of the Burmese people.

I sincerely hope that China will use it's influence to put an end to the brutal repression of a junta that has subordinated it's people for too long.

Empty Room To Hotel Room

ImageAs I'm not flying out until the weekend, I'm now in another city where I've been out for lunch and dinner with friends today and plan on having a few days R & R. It's just like home from home.............................

Empty Room

Image
I've just finished the task I really hate most about travelling and moving on and that's packing up. It's really not so much the actual physical effort involved (which of course is no great pleasure) but something else. I think it relates to the fact that my worldly belongings are so dispensable and reading through old cards / presents / photos to decide which ones are more or less important to me and hence the latter are filed under 'b' with a certain amount of hesitation. It's also quite sad stripping an apartment of all of your own fixtures and memories to leave it bare again - after all this was home. Looking around now - it's clearly not mine anymore and I feel an irrational sense of loss for that.

Many people have often expressed a desire to live the kind of life I live but in reality it really isn't all a bed of roses. It involves a lot of disassociation from continuity although it has mostly positive benefits for me (convincing myself here!) and sometimes feelings of regret and self analysis. On this occassion, I'm actually returning somewhere where I found a 'significant other'. That is really very scarey because for me 1 has never been a lonely number. He's cute, smart and I have great arguments with him (I said arguments!).

The disagreements are mostly about my lifestyle and the fact that I do mostly what I want to do because as an individual I believe that to be my inalienable right. That could be seen as being wholly selfish but I have never promised anything to anybody about what I know I can't do or respect. Alternatively, I've almost always (and of course there are exceptions due to human flaws) delivered on promises I genuinely believe I can fulfil.

What am I talking about? Not entirely sure - but just putting my thoughts into writing before I leave this 'empty room' tommorrow. There really is nothing like an 'empty room' to clarify one's importance in the world.

The 'empty room' will soon host another's life and more than that it will probaby be around a lot longer than it's current or future occupants in the big scheme of things.

'Empty room' - here's to you and all who inhabit you! Thanks for the ride........

MI6 / CIA Plot?

Image
A former UK parish councillor has married a son of Osama bin Laden following a "fairytale romance" in Egypt and is making plans for when he will be able to obtain a visa to come and live with her.

Jane Felix-Browne, 51, who recently resigned from her post as a councillor in Moulton, Cheshire, said yesterday that she married Omar Osama bin Laden, 27, the al-Qaida leader's fourth eldest son, who works as a scrap metal dealer in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Mrs Felix-Browne, an interior designer before she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis nine years ago, says the couple fell in love after Mr bin Laden saw her riding a horse near the Great Pyramid of Giza in September. They were married in Islamic ceremonies in Egypt and Saudi Arabia in April. "I married the man I fell in love with," she told the Guardian. "I married a very quiet, a very kind man. It was a fairytale romance." (Source: UK Guardian.)

QEK: Oh please - then she runs off to all the press at every opportunity - if this doesn't bring him out of hiding nothing will.

QEK:If you really were in love, I hardly think you'd be behaving in this quite obvious way you old trout. I have no opinion on Osama as I have no evidence - but I've heard you on air several times today you transparent creature.

Even the article Guardian was written 'tongue in cheek' but I doubt you'd realise that.

"I didn't want anyone to find out" . "I didn't want any sensationalism" : Just two of the many quotes I've heard you saying today as you have talked at length and creating exactly what you say you didn't want. What a strange way of going about things.

Perhaps you should take a leaf out of Camilla's book although I doubt that would suit your objective (s).

Cambodia Calling

ImageIn typical form, just when I thought things were almost running to what my sane self would consider to be some kind of 'normality' (ie. fairly organised in the very loosest sense) - I got an email on my return home tonight.

My mate Chloe needs to sort her visa out and leave Thailand - she has suggested that she meets me off the flight in Bangkok and I accompany her by bus ( bus ?? ) to Cambodia and maybe Vietnam (see how it goes) after a couple of days in Bangkok.

Chloe is a real live wire and I'm not sure that all that adventure just after arrival is for me but then again - I just can't resist somehow.

On the runway ........

Image Not literally but in the final stages of packing up and organising life on the move. Unfortunately, 2 of my main life support devices decided to malfunction last week (laptop & cell phone). The laptop is almost back to it's former glory and the cell phone will be soon hopefully. Just typical that they leave it to this particularly hectic time to play up.

I've struck lucky with accommodation as 2 friends are renting a house and so am going to stay with them at least in the short term and then who knows?

So flights booked, appropriate visa being processed and so undercarriage will shortly be up...................

Judas Priest

ImageI've spent this evening watching a BBC documentary on heavy metal in which I discovered that Rob Halford the lead singer in Judas Priest bats for our side. I've never been a fan of heavy metal and until now can't even recall seeing any shots of the band. I might have had a slight whiff of something had I done so before!

How amusing then that it was Rob's inspiration that changed the image of the band by kitting them out in gear from a local bondage store and having an almost immediate impact on the dress and style of a generation of heavy metal fans.

'Rock Fever'

ImageA few years ago I lived and worked in the Virgin Islands which was a great experience and a truly beautiful place. However, ex-pats used to refer to the need to leave the islands and visit mainland USA because of 'Rock Fever'. Rock fever was mainly caused by the fact that the islands are tiny places (like large 'Rocks') and tiny communities where everybody just about knows everybody else and nothing very new ever seems to happen (apart from the odd hurricane!). After a while it can become quite claustrophobic hence the need to leave for a while.

Right now I'm suffering from 'ROK' fever (Republic of Korea) in a similar way. Although I've lived in Korea for a few years now, my latest place of residence is much more remote than previously and that coupled with virtually no English speakers is the main cause of this particular brand of ex-pat fever!

Thank God for my blog and blog buddies! I know what you're thinking Don and you'd be right 'here we go again!!' - ha ha.

War Memorial Day

ImageTomorrow is a national holiday here in Korea to remember those killed in the Korean War (1950-1953). It was one of the bloodiest conflicts of this century and it's alarming to note that some commentators have been likening the war in Iraq to the war in Korea all those years ago.

Summer at Last

Image

Over the last week the heat and humidity has been rising steadily but this morning I had the final confirmation that summer is really here - a Korean 'commando mosquito' in my bedroom. These things are camouflaged and so tough that they can bit through jeans! Fortunately, it landed and with a quick smack I killed it before it struck (I think) although it was full of somebody's blood as my bed sheets testify.

Time to make sure all the screens are deployed against this ruthless of Korean warrior.

Jena Justice

Image
I watched a BBC documentary this morning on a case that had almost passed me by which is hardly surprising since most things are fairly random to me. I can't get it out of my head and can't understand why this 'thing' isn't booted out of the US judicial system right now - I could talk more but I know it's in the best of hands right now and we should all just publicise it to ensure that justice wins the day and that the spotlight is put on those who have questions to answer outside of the immediate case.

The District Attorney should contemplate his own fate.....................fool, bigot and fraud in public office. You are a disgrace. Early retirement for you but think about the implications of your actions.

Impartiality - that is your judicial function - at least in any civilised community - shame on you.

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/world/story/0,,2083762,00.html

Maybe I'm quick to come to judgement because I've only spent several hours today looking over various reports (which is certainly more time than a barrister and his brief and I should know) but I don't think I was as quick as the D.A in this case (albeit probably folding under pressure) to reach a decision which not only dishonours his office but also the diverse community he is supposed to represent.

DA = Dick Ass.

Let's hope justice prevails and that a school yard ruck doesn't see young men and their futures' destroyed at 'the stroke of a pen'.

War on Terror?

Image
Not only do I personally have serious misgivings about TWOT (I so wish they'd have termed it 'the war against terror'!) but clowns like this in the British legal system make me despair at the not so comical nature of justice:

A judge overseeing the trial of three alleged Muslim “cyber-terrorists” has been given a basic lesson on the internet – after admitting that he did not know what a “website” was. Mr Justice Peter Openshaw, who is conducting the trial at Woolwich Crown Court, stunned prosecutors when he said: “The trouble is I don’t understand the language. I don’t really understand what a website is.”

His remark looks destined to join a list of comments by judges that are forever trotted out in support of the legend of judicial ignorance.

On May 17th the judge paid close attention to a Powerpoint presentation on the world-wide web. The first slide displayed by Professor Tony Sams, a computer expert, showed a yellow cloud labelled “internet” connected by blue lines to two computers. Professor Sams told the judge: “The internet is a complex communication system. What you need to do is log into the system either through a telephone cable or perhaps through a television cable.”

The professor then explained the terms “dial-up” and “broad-band”, adding: “It is how fast you can communicate.” He said that each computer on the internet was given a unique IP address, which could be accessed by a domain name such as www.sainsburys.co.uk.

The professor added: “You type in the domain name into your web browser to go there. Your computer has to go to a domain name server. As a user types in a domain name the browser first of all goes to a server and that server tells it what the actual IP address of that domain name is.”

All judges are now provided with computers and many of them use them extensively, including a judicial “intranet” or chat forum. But one or two remain wedded to the tried and trusted methods of writing up their notes and judgments by hand.

The defendants – Younis Tsouli, 23, Waseem Mughal, 24, and Tariq Al-Daour, 21 – are accused of helping to distribute Islamic propaganda over the internet in support of al-Qaeda.
Tsouli, who is alleged to have surfed the web using the online name Irhabi007 – meaning Terrorist 007 – from his home in Shepherds Bush, West London, is said to have had links to an al-Qaeda group in Iraq led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

It is also claimed that Tsouli and Mughal became involved in a murder plot by two Muslim extremists linked to a new group called al-Qaeda in Northern Europe. Anti-terrorist police were alerted after the two men were arrested in Bosnia with a video allegedly showing them preparing a suicide bomb vest.

The three defendants were arrested in raids on October 21 2005. Mughal, of Chatham, Kent, and Tsouli both deny conspiracy to murder, incitement to commit an act of terrorism and two counts of possessing a document or record likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism. Al-Daour, of Bayswater, West London, denies six counts of possessing a document or record likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, two counts of incitement to commit an act of terrorism and conspiracy to defraud.

The trial continues - presumably it might take some time 'judging' on how long it can take an old dog to learn or at least understand the fundamentals of a new trick.
