...so there was a void in my life and I filled it with ( Teen Wolf (Season 1 ONLY jabberings) ) So despite the fact that it has things I like and not really many things I don't like. I am still...not certain I want to embark on Season 2 even though there has been so much squee about it (apparently the S2 final was this week, who would have ever guessed?). Maybe if I get sick and end up bed ridden again (I hope not). Convince me.

The history of this LJ/DW in 100 words or less more

This LJ/DW was started because of fandom. I wrote in HP mostly (but this was not where I started), but stopped because canon was uninspiring. Then I started posting about things like my anxiety and depression (because they like fandom, can be consuming), my PhD (yeah, I'm an idiot who is in love with scientific research and high stress situations, I have problems), things that enrage me (so many things), the boys who I get crushes on but never do anything about (did I mention, I have problems? I am working on these), and I flocked everything. Then I watched The Vampire Diaries and, and, and...it took over my brain.

...Also! Sorry that I didn't have time to comment at the meme to say hi and introduce myself. I know that's lazy (and maybe even rude) but I am at a relative's and there is only so long you can spend being on antisocial when visiting family. (It is apparently just over 2 hours...)

...a week has past and apparently I'm going to try to have coherent thoughts about last week's mid-season finale (ok, so that doesn't sound right to me at all). Anywho.

...anyway, my comments re: Nina's acting has made me remember that for like ages now I've been meaning to comment that all the shows that have really drawn me in this year have had the same actors playing multiple characters. I mean, Boomer on BSG was pretty much the thing that hooked me because it was just fascinating as well as Boomer being pretty much adorable and easy to relate to. ( For spoilers. I'm not even sure that I haven't ruined it all already )

...speaking of Grace Park, I am late to the H50 party, I know, and I only watched it because I read some meta and it was pretty convincing meta about subtext and then I found out it had James Marsters and Larisa Oleynik guest starring (what?).

Anyway, after the most recent ep on here (we're like a couple of weeks behind) I've decided that my original reasons for not watching it still stand, and I don't know how people who live on Hawaii watch it (do they watch it? I should ask my Grandma) because man, it's not they they get things about Oahu wrong (it's a bit exaggerated, sure) or that I am that familiar with it (considering) but there are so many times where I'm just thrown out because they mention things or there are setting shots and I am just like, 'oh my Grandma has a story...' or 'oh I've been there' or 'oh that's where insert random relative/family friend here did crazy random thing here' and I just. I start giggling. For reasons totally unrelated to the show.

Anyway, that is my story. (And my Grandma always has a story).

...also, I thought this would be fun, because I am SO shippy and involved in fandom right now and all (erm, yeah, okay, so I am trying my best to get back into it because have I mentioned how much thinking hurts these days and how I cannot stop with all of the thoughts).

I tried so hard, but I am not much of a dedicated shipper, unless we start going into the icky world of Australian Politics RPF for which we know I ship forever Malcolm Turnbull/Leather Jacket and Malcolm Fraser/Labor Party (OMG, you guys, if you didn't see that media session in 2009 then, man did you miss out!). Also not Australian Politics, but vaguely related and should be noted: Kate Adie/Everybody for she is amazecakes.

Ok, ok, the ships listed above are all fictional (except one, because truly is is a real romance of the ages and cannot be denied!). And to help, the fandoms include: ASOIAF, HP, TVD, BSG, AoGG, P&P, Firefly, Obernewtyn, Gruen (that is so a fandom ok?), Peninsula/The Thief 'verse and Inception.

...Argh, so this this meant to be the post about The Saints. And look, fair warning I am going to go on tangents, because it took me a very long time to get from manufactured UK pop to The Saints, even though The Saints are the before and not the after.

Anyway, let start with the after, shall we?

One of the main drivers behind why I like the music I like, is this sense of being cheated. I was all set up to grow up into this 1990s Indie-kid, and then bam! The 1990s ended before I could be that. And I've never really gotten over it?

(Ugh, so a search on Indie kid on wiki redirects to Hipster, and god, I am so a Hipster, but a Hipster isn't an Indie kid and I'm not sure I can really digest the fact that I mean that in a serious, non-ironic sense...see, it's a vicious circle).

So all of that, doesn't really explain why I want to rave about a 1970s punk band (well, ok, the part where I ramble about how I'm a self-confessed hipster does...), but were are going to get there. I promise. But here's the truth: this isn't so much a post about The Saints as it is a self-indulgent essay on the music I love.

So let's start at the beginning where the first CD I ever 'bought' was a Celine Dion album. It was for my birthday, to my eternal shame. And yes, I am young enough to have never owned a cassette (well, okay I did own cassettes but there were whatever the pre-Wiggles children's bands were). I am not entirely sure why I liked Celine Dion. Possibly she was popular? Anyway, it was v. exciting. I was 10. I played it on repeat. A lot.

Then there was the manufactured UK pop. See: The Spice Girls, B*witched, All Saints, 5ive etc. From this list you an tell, I wasn't much into American music. The Backstreet Boys were around, but I didn't listen to them. I had taste! Except, I never did actually own a Spice Girls album. I own all of the others, but not the Spice Girls? How did I manage that? I did see The Spice Girls Movie in the cinema though. Possibly more than once.

And around the same time, I discovered (you tube clip embedded underneath the cut):

And look, I don't know how it is now, because I have retreated so far into my world where I pretend commercial radio doesn't exist (it doesn't for me), but back then you were either into pop. Or you were weird.

So I was weird. Not that The Living End aren't mainstream, but they were very much not The Spice Girls.

Anyway, The Living End? Pretty much opened up the whole world of Australian Rock for me. I owe them a lot. Without them I never would have gotten onto Silverchair, Grinspoon, Regurgitator, or Spiderbait.

And being into Australian rock changed my life. For serious, I have friendships that are solely based on the fact that I know who these bands are. And through these friendships, I found out about other music.

Like, Nirvana, because yeah, I was four when that shit hit the fan.

But also, The Clash. Joy Division. And unfortunately, The Smiths (for some reason The Smiths don't work for me? But I'm okay with The Stone Roses? I don't understand).

And look, I am a huge fan of The Clash. Seriously, there will rarely be a day where The Clash hasn't played on my ipod at some point. They are The Clash. Except there is something better than The Clash. They are called The Saints.

And there are all sorts of reason for this. You could say, it's because they pre-date The Clash by two years. You could say, it's because they're Australian. You could say, it's because Chris Bailey is just so punk that it hurts. But mostly it's because of songs like this:



So yeah, that's not a classic example. See Stranded if you want that. But, but, part of the reason why I think they are so awesome. Is not because of all the reasons I've listed above. Well, except for the extreme punk-ness of Chris Bailey. Who is still living versus Joe Strummer who is not.

No, no, no. The reason, why they are so awesome is that they pre-date this and do with a thousand times more grace.

And I've seen Panic, live. Twice. To my eternal shame.
