I made this for dinner
May. 25th, 2011 09:12 pmIt was tasty.
Quinoa with Grilled Zucchini, Garbanzo Beans, and Cumin.
I grilled the zucchini under the broiler instead of on a barbeque. The smoked paprika was a nice extra layer of flavour.
That's all for now.

So awesome!
May. 13th, 2011 06:36 pmThe Photopic Sky Survey is a 5,000 megapixel photograph of the entire night sky stitched together from 37,440 exposures. Large in size and scope, it portrays a world far beyond the one beneath our feet and reveals our familiar Milky Way with unfamiliar clarity. When we look upon this image, we are in fact peering back in time, as much of the light—having traveled such vast distances—predates civilization itself.
Seen at a depth thousands of times more faint than the dimmest visible star, tens of millions of other suns appear, still perhaps only a hundredth of one percent thought to exist in our galaxy alone. Our Milky Way galaxy is the dominant feature, its dusty arms sweeping through the frame, punctuated by red clouds of glowing hydrogen. To the lower right are our nearest neighbors, each small galaxies themselves with their own hundreds of millions of stars.
It's like Google Earth but looking up at the stars.
Here's a bonus bit of trivia about me: when I first went to university, I was studying to be an astrophysicist.
The power of reading & narratives
May. 10th, 2011 09:16 amHere's a cool sciencey story on the social psychology of reading fiction: We actually 'become' happy vampires or contented wizards when reading a book
Pure awesome!

Language fail
May. 3rd, 2011 07:29 pmI'm not doing so well with the daily postings for 3w4dw. I'll leave you all with this rather impressive kludge of language fail found while idly surfing IMDB: "Movie stars which could of went further in there career"
I count five errors. At least he got further vs. farther right, right?

The Ethical Irreligious
Apr. 30th, 2011 09:15 amVia Pharyngula this morning, a Washington Post article, Why Do Americans Still Dislike Atheists?.
As an atheist who finds it tedious having to explain to the occasional theist that, no, being an atheist does not mean a person is evil and immoral, and no, humans don't require God to be moral: we can establish our own ethics and morality free of appeals to a deity; this article brightened my morning.
It also brings to mind the general bullying and ostracism of my high school days due to my atheism. Rumour had it I was a Satanist. It was written on the bathroom stall doors; it must be true! And then there were the 'friends' who would befriend me for the sole purpose of trying to convert me.
In other things, I think I am finally catching up on sleep! ETA: But not writing. Too many chores; too little energy.

Briefly, Ghost Writer
Apr. 29th, 2011 11:11 pmI didn't post yesterday, did I?
Today I watched a film: Ghost Writer. I really enjoyed it, even more than I expected, and my expectations were high ( Read more... )
And now you know why I don't write film reviews. ^^;;

A very quick post (today was super duper exhausting, but it was not a bad day at all, just super duper exhausting) to fulfill my 3w4dw intentions.
A quick fic rec!
ETA: OMG, I linked to the wrong fic; please forgive me and try again! The link is fixed. Thank you, Calli! <3
Dust [rated T] by at_kb
"It's AC 204. Trowa was never found. Quatre never mastered the Zero System. Libra fell. AU, dystopia, 3x4, kinda. T for themes of war and cursing."
It's short, potent, and has a tremendous sense of setting.

NASA'a latest plans to enable exploration into space includes developing refueling stations in space.

The acronym doesn't exactly roll off the tongue though: ISCPSTD.
Fuel is a major issue when it comes to long-duration spaceflights - its weight is a problem for launch and once a spacecraft runs out of fuel there's no place to get more. That's where in-space "gas" stations located in strategic spots along a route would be a boon to spaceflight.
Which is exactly what NASA is looking to do by beginning to solicit proposals for what it calls an In-Space Cryogenic Propellant Storage and Transfer Demonstration that will lay the ground work for humans to safely reach multiple destinations, including the Moon, asteroids, Lagrange points and Mars.

Singing Mice
Apr. 26th, 2011 09:26 amThis is awesome and beautiful, and it reminds me again why I love science so!
From the May 2011 Smithsonian magazine:

The world of rodents, long thought mostly quiet, may be full of songs, broadcast short distances, from one animal to another, songs that we still know very little about.

Or, why there is no such thing as a stupid/wrong/offensive/<<insert pejorative of your choice>> question.
I like to think most human beings find ignorance undesirable. For me, I see education as a silver bullet to so much of what humanity stumbles over and fumbles with. If the truth will set us free, then it is knowledge, critical thinking, and unabashed curiosity that will lead us to that freedom.
For anyone to be told their question is not worthy of being spoken, let alone answered, is to slam a door in the face of their curiosity, it's to alienate people from the confidence to wonder, and it both reinforces and perpetuates ignorance. It closes minds and isolates us from each other.
Every question is worth asking.

3W4DW day one - FONSFAQS
Apr. 25th, 2011 08:57 amThere are some nifty projects called FONSFAQS (Frequently - or not so frequently - Asked Questions) up for the 3w4dw event. Each has a different topic. The idea is that someone prompts with a question or subject, and then someone claims that prompt and writes and answer. The topics are diverse; there's even one for waffles!
Links!
FONSFAQ Projects Materlist
And a few I am especially interested in:
Mental Illness
Aoteraroa New Zealand
Computational Linguistics
Macroeconomics
Genderqueers/gender expression/gender variance

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth
Apr. 24th, 2011 10:53 amSo I figured I'd maybe try giving it a go. I'll aim to post something each day anyway, even if it's just a fic rec. ^^;
