gone fishin'*

*(not really)

I never did much here in the first place, but I've stopped even reading my flist here; it's all crossposts to or from other sites where I read my flist, and the redundancy was mind-numbing.

My main journal is ree.dreamwidth.org, which I mirror on LJ. I also occasionally remember my my Tumblr. Twitter gets all the junk I fail to blog.

So long, and thanks for all the flist.

how to get new IJ Inbox messages to appear

Sometimes the inbox will say "You have 1 new message" (or however many), but no new message is seen. OHNOES!

If you delete a message from your inbox, then click Refresh, the new messages will appear. I'm not sure if this works when deleting a message from any page of your inbox (if you have more than one page of notifications), but deleting one from Page 1 has always worked for me.

another userstyle: IJ portal blues

I wasn't satisfied with the appearance of my first userstyle for the IJ portal. Sure, it was legible, but it was bland and ugly as sin.

So here's the sequel: IJ portal blues. Unlike its predecessor, this one should look nice in every single sitescheme, light or dark. It uses smooth blues and a few tiny images to dress itself up a bit.

Because this scheme only affects the portal, it doesn't require the IJ Skins Class Adder or script. Just load it up in Stylish or add it to your userContent.css, and you're set.

userstyle: IJ portal, greyed

I've struggled with the poor contrast on IJ's portal page ever since setting up shop here. I set up my own custom style early. Now you can use it too, if you like: http://userstyles.org/styles/4622 .

I make no claims of beauty for it. I personally find it hurts my eyes significantly less than the default (New Tweak) does; your mileage may vary. Mileage tends to.

IJ and Opera, together at last

Updated 2 Nov 2008: You don't need this any more. The current default sitescheme works beautifully in Opera without needing any work-around. If you're an Opera user who's deeply attached to the "New Tweak" site scheme, though, read on.

(Hrm, I can't tag entries when posting from IJ mobile? Drat. I'll add tags later then.)

So! I have finally located a work-around for a long-standing irritation of mine: InsaneJournal's total lack of menu when viewed in Opera. (We won't even get into the fact that the menu doesn't appear anywhere unless JavaScript is enabled, because that would get me ranting and we'd be here till Christmas.)

> At www.insanejournal.com, there is supposed to be a menu at the top, but
> it does not show in Opera:

The menu is coded to disable itself when it detects any version of Opera. The site needs to update to a later version of the menu (any version released in the last three years should do).

You can work around it by setting the site-specific preferences to Mask as Firefox.

found on the Opera support mailing list

I have a few thoughts on that.
  • OMG I see the menu! Yay!
  • Wait, IJ just needs a newer version of some JavaScript and everything would work? Is that right? If so, why on Earth hasn't that happened yet?
  • If I set Opera to mask as another browser, won't that skew IJ's stats so they think nobody's using Opera -- even though I am using Opera and would happily identify it honestly if that just, y'know, worked.
Anywhere, there's your Opera workaround. It still doesn't let me right-click menu items to open them in background tabs, but I suppose that's too much to expect of one revelation.

this is a test, it is only a test

Testing DeepestSender with IJ. If it works, that means IJ's flat interface endpoint is http://www.insanejournal.com/interface/flat .

ETA: It does work. Awesome. That means I can work on getting crossposting ready and going. Fantastic!

As for me, I'm just another roleplayer pissed off at LJ and setting up shop here. It's slow work.
