IO3: Report on Research-based Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Following the work supervised by University West, the leader of this intellectual output, the report was written by Monika Hattinger supported by the work of all the partners. Indeed the IO3 report stems from the work led beforehand with the interviews of the teachers in each university partner. The interview allowed for an exchange of good practices as all the partners had not mastered this investigation method. Those good practices were shared through documents and advice. Interesting results were gathered through the interview sessions and led to the writing of the report below.

RELEARN – Our Journey and Final Steps

The fifth transnational project meeting took place in Rome, Italy, marking a significant milestone in our journey to conclude our project on Research-Based Teaching for Lifelong Learning. Against the backdrop of a rainy Rome, we gathered to review our progress on intellectual outputs, assess the impact of our work, and map out the final steps toward project completion. This was a milestone meeting, filled with both reflection and forward thinking as we approached the project’s final stages.

Discussing the Multiplier Events – A Platform for Broader Impact

One of the main topics of discussion was the multiplier events. These events are pivotal in showcasing not only our RELEARN platform but also the project’s other key outputs, including a glossary and specialized learning modules designed for teachers and students. These gatherings gave us a unique opportunity to share our platform with a diverse audience—teachers, students, higher education organisations, researchers, media and platform sector professionals, policy-makers, and more. More than just a conclusion of our work, these events celebrated the lasting impact we hope to have on education and lifelong learning practices.

The Power of Physical Presence in Fostering Collaboration

Our meeting in Rome reaffirmed a valuable insight we gained throughout this project: the powerful impact of in-person collaboration. Physical presence fosters a unique level of engagement, sparking spontaneous ideas, resolving complex issues more quickly, and strengthening our connections as a team. The productivity and enthusiasm that filled the room highlighted the value of these face-to-face exchanges, which allowed us to delve deeply into discussions, refine our collective vision for the project’s final phase, and clarify the impact we aim to achieve.

Valuing Research-Based Teaching – An Evolving Perspective at FERIT

This project has also been transformative for our RELEARN FERIT team, profoundly influencing our teaching approach and helping us recognize the deeper value of research-based methodologies. These methods encourage students to think critically, engage deeply with content, and apply their learning in ways that mirror real-world challenges and inquiries.

As a result, we’ve started integrating these practices into our classrooms, cultivating an environment that prioritizes critical inquiry and innovation. We’ve also been actively sharing our insights with colleagues and students alike, raising awareness of the benefits that a research-driven approach brings to education. Through these conversations, we aim to create a ripple effect, inspiring others to adopt these techniques and foster a lifelong love of learning.

This might mean suggesting the most relevant resources by using advanced algorithms and a database of over 200 million scientific papers and books in a couple of clicks.

While the generative LLM models sometimes “hallucinate” results—meaning they come up with outputs that are unreal or actual—Re:Learn leverages much more advanced validation to ensure all recommended resources will be real and valid. Each recommendation checks through our large database, ensuring educators receive only those resources that exist indeed and serve their needs.
