Below are answers to common questions from young families and individuals looking for a Reformed church community in San Diego, including details on our children’s ministry, worship style, and what to expect on your first visit.

Yes — absolutely. You’re welcome here as you are. We don’t expect you to have all the answers or check any boxes before you walk through the door. We’re a community in downtown San Diego shaped by the beautiful truth of the gospel, and we grow together — not by performance, but by encountering the grace of Jesus Christ.

Expect a warm welcome, a service rooted in Scripture and historic Christian worship, and people who genuinely want to know your story. After the service, many stay for coffee and conversation — no pressure, just space to breathe, observe, and belong.

No. You don’t need any particular background, denomination, or spiritual résumé. We are grounded in the historic Christian faith — affirming the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds and standing in the Reformed tradition — but we welcome anyone seeking truth, belonging, and a deeper encounter with Jesus.

Beautiful Orthodoxy describes our conviction that historic Christian truth is not only true, but good and beautiful — and that it should be embodied, not merely explained. At Resurrection SD, this means worship that is reverent but alive, ancient but intelligible, doctrinally rich yet pastorally warm. We believe God forms His people through beauty rightly ordered — through Scripture, prayer, music, confession, preaching, and sacrament — all centered on Christ.

Reformed Catholicity expresses our desire to be both fully Reformed and fully rooted in the Great Tradition of the Church. We hold to the convictions of the Protestant Reformation while embracing the wisdom, worship, and theological depth of the early and medieval church — without compromise or syncretism. Practically, this shapes our liturgy, preaching, sacramental life, and discipleship, as we seek to live as a faithful, historic church for our time and place.

We believe the entire service — from beginning to end — is worship, not just the music. Our worship is historic, Scripture-shaped, and centered on Jesus Christ. God speaks to us through His Word, and we respond with prayer, song, confession, thanksgiving, and praise. We are not trying to manufacture an experience; we are gathering to meet the living God through the ordinary means He has given His Church for centuries.

Liturgy simply means “order of service,” and every church has one. The real question is whether that order is shaped by the story of the gospel or by modern habits of entertainment and consumerism. Historic Christian worship follows a gospel-shaped pattern: God calls us, cleanses us, instructs us, feeds us, and sends us out with His blessing. This dialogical rhythm goes back to the earliest days of the Church and forms us over time — shaping not only what we believe, but how we repent, rejoice, love, and live.

Our sermons are Christ-centered and grounded in the conviction that the whole Bible ultimately points to Jesus — who He is and what He has done for us. We do address how Christians are called to live, but never apart from the grace that first saves us and sustains us. The goal of our preaching is not self-improvement, but a deeper love for Christ that leads to grateful obedience.

We celebrate the Lord’s Supper weekly as a real, Spirit-given communion with Christ. Through ordinary bread and wine, Jesus is truly present, nourishing His people with the grace of the gospel in a real and powerful way. All baptized Christians who belong to any orthodox church are welcome to partake with us. If you’re unsure whether that applies to you, or if you’re exploring the Christian faith, we invite you to speak with one of our elders or pastors — we’d be glad to help you take the next faithful step.

We believe children belong in worship with their families. At Resurrection SD, we love supporting young families, and the core of our children’s ministry is the Family Worship Initiative. Scripture teaches that parents — especially fathers, or mothers when needed — are the primary disciplers of their children. We see that responsibility as a gift God gives to families, not something the church should replace. For that reason, our children’s ministry is intentionally supplemental, not substitutive. Our aim is to equip and support parents in worshiping God with their children throughout the week, knowing that family worship is one of the strongest foundations for lasting faith beyond childhood. This also means our worship services can be a bit more lively. Children sometimes wiggle, whisper, or make noise — and that’s okay. We’re grateful for the sound of children learning to worship alongside the people of God, so please don’t feel anxious if your child gets fussy. For moments when a break is needed, we have a quiet room adjacent to the ladies’ restroom where parents can step out briefly and rejoin the service when ready. We also offer a nursery for children ages 0–4.

Yes. There are three parking lots on the northwest corner of 3rd Avenue and Elm Street — next to Westminster Towers, across from City Tree School, and across from Kenzi Coffee on Elm Street. Parking is free for anyone attending church; no payment is required.

Yes — though not in the way most churches do. Each Sunday at 10:30 AM, a number of us gather for prayer at Kenzi Coffee, just a short walk from the church. We’re grateful for their hospitality and the space they provide, and we love supporting our neighbors in the community. They do a far better job making excellent coffee and breakfast pastries than we ever could, and it gives us a simple way to begin the morning together in prayer while blessing a local business. You’re warmly invited to join us — whether for prayer, coffee, or both — before heading over to worship.

We help people grow through three core pillars: Holistic Worship — where God meets us with grace and truth. Transformative Discipleship — where we learn to live gospel-shaped lives together. A Culture of Mission — where we share Christ’s beautiful life with San Diego and the world. Growth is not merely the accumulation of knowledge — it is transformation.

Serving our city matters deeply to us. We partner with local ministries, care for the poor and marginalized, and create opportunities to love our neighbors in tangible ways. We serve not to be seen, but to reflect the mercy we ourselves have received in Christ.

There are many ways to connect: Attend Sunday worship, Join a Community Group, Participate in classes or ministries, Contact a pastor, Join outreach efforts. We’d love to help you find the right next step — just reach out or speak with someone after the service.

We’re here for that. Our pastors and leaders are available for conversation, questions, prayer, and support. Whether you’re wrestling with faith, navigating life’s challenges, or simply curious, we’d be honored to talk with you.
