Terrifyingly enough, I don't actually think all the stuff that I'd contemplated is on this list. I haven't gone through all my 'Active stories' folders to be sure. Yeah. I'll, um, just go write now.

Old journal style was Peacock by Kerravonsen, if I want to change back.

First Posted: 04 Feb 2008.
Last Updated: 29 Aug 2016 -- Haresh & Rich is done, and LaCroix and Constantine.  And? I've hit 70% on my HL crossovers!

rhi: What the cat sees in the mirror: a lion. believe in yourself. (believe in yourself)
I'm prioritizing getting enough sleep first, then eating right, then exercise.  And, weirdly enough, I am starting to get more energy to catch up on backlogged house projects, and writing, and chatting with friends.  Funny how that might work.

And for anyone I haven't mentioned it to, if you're AFAB and interested in fitness, you may be interested in Roar (if you're pre-menopausal) or Next Level (if you're almost done/done with periods) by Dr Stacy Sims.  I'm finding the advice useful.  Not all of it, obviously, seeing as I'm not an extreme athlete.  I don't do triathlons, say.  But do I hit the gym three or four times a week?  Yup.  So.

Anyway, my goals are to get up to twice the time I can currently manage on an elliptical (so, long enough to 'run' a 5 K) and to finish Deadfall, damn it. After that, the Numb3rs monstrosity. (Length, more than subject matter. It's not tree horror, okay?) And in and through, other short stuff, I guess, but probably the next things will be Deadfall chapters until I'm done.

(Someone help me remember:  I have a Night in the Lonesome October piece to finish, and also the Leverage/X-men piece that's currently at 6 pages and going well.)
rhi: a vivid purple eye (vision)
I'm looking at this naked fashion trend and I'm just... First, my brain goes back to Roman sumptuary laws on see-through muslin from India.  (It was absolutely see-through, too.)  Second, though, I think, 'Oh, look, the new body control for women.  Take your GLP-1s, and don't eat so you have less ground to complain about the prices of food, and show yourself off to the men.'  So, misogyny and fat-shaming. :sighs:

I'll believe this isn't misogyny when I see the straight guys wearing their best lingerie under suits cut out of see-through fabrics, just FYI.

I'm usually a winter person, but this year, I've been sick and then cranky and look forward to spring.  Not to summer, just spring.

Anyone got stuff that's making them happy?  I'm resisting getting into Heated Rivalry because the only sport I watch is volleyball and some of the Olympics.  Mostly gymnastics and ice skating.  I'm not sure who else is reading Longmire or In Death, and honestly, I'm afraid Johnson has written himself into a corner with Longmire.  There's a nice Discord server for Highlander, and I'm hoping the group rewatches will get me back into my fandom, but honestly, most of the characters there don't talk to me now.

Ah, well.  Maybe once I finish the Leverage novel, the Numbers novel, and the Marvel/Lonesome October piece I'll get back to it.  I can hope?
rhi: Typerwriter. "Writing is good for the soul." (writing)
I came down with whatever that not-flu, not-Covid, not-strep shit is the morning of Christmas.  Three weeks later, I stopped running a fever and started recovering.  All of which is to say, this is not late so much as delayed.

To my pleased shock, I posted a *lot* last year:  13 individual pieces, plus three chapters of Deadfall.  Total words:  45K, pretty much.  I have at least that much again in progress, and I'm delighted to be able to say this!

YAY!!

Also, let me mention that there is a lovely community, [community profile] communal_creators , in which people work over a week or month together. (March, so coming up soon for the week; September/October and we vote on the dates for that one, too.). This has been a huge help to my creative output coming back up again and it's a blast to see/hear what people are doing, cheer each other on, and man, the gif game in that Discord server is amazing.

Anyway.  All of this to say, I'm very happy with how much I posted this last year and hope this year will also be productive!
rhi: A snow covered tree, a snow covered fence, and blue sky reflecting everywhere (snowy fence)
The cold's been decently bad, certainly for us delicate Southern critters.

The snow is, of course, insulated top and bottom by ice, or maybe it's insulating the ice. I do not know.  It got up over freezing significantly (41 F) yesterday... and hit 31 today, so what little had melted refroze.

But if you want to know just how bad it is in my city?  My mailman has not been by since the storm hit.

That bad.

Hope the rest of y'all are well.  Me, I have power, I have food in the house, and tea.  No worries.

01. Grab the nearest book.
02. Turn to page 126
03. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

Tom Standage, A History of the World in 6 Glasses?  Oh, this'll be fun.

"Paying the federal militia to suppress the rebellion cost $1.5 million, nearly one-third of the entire excise duties collected during the ten years the excise law was in force."

:reads.  rereads.  looks around.  sighs again:

I'll just be over here.

rhi: A white teapot with bluework pouring hot tea into a matching teacup. (teapot)
So, it's too warm here for how dark it gets so early, and the leaves are still on the trees so it clearly cannot be deer season yet much less time to worry about holiday presents.  But, weirdly, my brain is in fall baking mode.  :sighs: Brains, man.

Have an old recipe I adapted years ago, originally from The Spice Cookbook by Avanelle Day and Lillie Stuckey, which I highly recommend and can be found in ebook if nothing else.  Also, oh my gods but the buttermilk powder from Bob's Red Mill is the most cost effective thing ever.  One bag cost me about... 2 pints of liquid buttermilk?  It has made a great deal more than that so far and is nowhere near empty.

Hope y'all enjoy!
rhi: Alec Hardison from Leverage. Age of the Geek, baby. (Age of the Geek)
Chapter ten is up!  I will finish this damn novel yet!

Chapter ten is here; the entire story (novella at this point) is here if you need to reread from the start.

Now I'm gonna post a recipe I promised and then go back to work on it and hope to finish the damn thing in this next year. (Life, pls to quit throwing things like a new HVAC at me.)

rhi: Journal, ink, fountain pen. "Everything but the plot." (no plot)
From [personal profile] senmut  via [personal profile] havocthecat  : (I'm posting my guess first, then the AO3 stats answer.)

1. Under what rating do you write most?
Me:  Probably gen.
AO3: Nope, Teen and up.  Oh, yeah, I have plot and fight scenes.  Okay.  (Teen and up:  121.  Gen: 102.  Total fics:  291.)

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
Me: Oh, Highlander, X-Files, Leverage?
AO3: Mostly right.  Highlander (183), X-Files (52), Highlander movies (30), Forever Knight (23).  I mean, no matter how you look at it, Highlander wins, and then X-Files.  Forever Knight beating Leverage did surprise me.  (Yes, those numbers and 291 seem off.  I write a lot of crossovers.)

3.  What character do you write about the most?
Me:  Um.  Connor MacLeod or Matthew McCormick?
AO3: Sorta.  Original characters: 52, Connor and Duncan are tied at 42.  (After that, it's Methos, Joe Dawson, and Alex Krycek.  Matthew is in 7th place with 26.)

4.  What are the top 3 pairings you've written?
Me:  No *clue*.
AO3:  Duncan MacLeod/Methos (14), Aidan/Duncan/Methos (9), and Duncan/Matthew McCormick (6).  When I say I don't have OTPs, I mean it.  Other than me and plot, and me and Dragon.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
Me:
Crossovers, Crossovers 100, prompt fic (?)
AO3:  I was right! Crossovers:  123.  Crossovers 100:  92.  X-Files Lyric Wheel:  23.

That was kinda fun.
rhi: A cappucino, my name written in the froth. (cappucino)
Welp, I printed it out without the URL, apparently, so, I must type it here to share it.  Oops.

"Intensely Flavorful, Super Moist Spice Cake" -- I used GF flour, so I'm not sure about the moist, but it's not dry, that's sure.  Seriously, this cake is autumn on your plate.

rhi: Crossovers lure you into new fandoms then run away giggling. (crossovers)
Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for [starting] a fic title? One fic per line, 'A' and 'The' do not count for 'a' and 't'. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count. (Using whichever fic I feel like when there are options.  God.  I feel like I could have just done crossovers...)
  • A And Sinister, X-Files/Greek myth (just trust me) It's perilous to bargain with dark women at crossroads.
  • B Bad News on the Doorstep, Highlander/Marvel Hopefully, they're going to get along. Maybe like a bar afire.
  • C Cherries In Winter, Victor/Victoria In the winter of 1935, soon to be 1936, Andre Cassell's club has a new opening act.
  • D Double Vision, Marvel (various canon) Steve Rogers learned his guilt-trip glare from his mother. It can have interesting effects.
  • E Exemptions and Indulgences, Highlander/Discworld I AM AFRAID YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION.
  • F Fire In The Hole, Highlander/X-Files/Buffy Possibly the weirdest part of Mulder's night so far -- and it said a lot about the whole thing -- lay in the wolf being the one that tried to get out of his way to let him shoot the basilisk again.
  • G A Game of Cat and Cat, Highlander/Blood Ties Two acquaintances from the court of Henry VIII, five hundred years later: who's playing with whom?
  • H Hot Pursuit, due South/Highlander Law enforcement officers can't resist hot pursuit. 800 year old FBI agents are no exception to this rule, especially when it's a Mountie in a speeding carriage chasing a wolf through Chicago.
  • I The Innocent Sleep, Highlander New Year's Eve at Joe's bar. Written for Amireal's International Nap Day challenge.
  • J Joe Dawson, BAMF, Highlander/Stargate SG-1 You can learn a lot of things in 13 weeks of boot, 3 months in Vietnam and 40 years of Watching Immortals.  One of the truer ones is that almost no one looks up.
  • K Kindred Spirits, Highlander/Leverage Rebeca learned about cons from one of the best.
  • L Life Cycles, Marvel Sometimes 'daddy's girl' isn't a description so much as a warning label.
  • Mismatched Pieces, Marvel/Highlander (Opportunities 'verse) Very few targets survive the Winter Soldier.
  • N Not To Plan, X-Files/Stargate SG-1 The second stupid thing the goons did was throw Mitchell in the same cell with Krycek.
  • Open(ing) Doors, Leverage Game and negotiation theory suggests that opening up and vulnerability can in fact lead to the best mutual outcomes. Grifters use their own apparent vulnerabilities to achieve their aims. Mix well, stir, and add an angry Eliot Spencer, who grifts quite well for a hitter retrieval specialist.
  • P Parched, Highlander Blood cleans off a blade so easily, really. Some days it's dry and difficult work. Other days it's as easy as running that blade through a man. This morning, though -- this morning was easy, both the killing and the aftermath.
  • Q Quiet Breaks, Numb3rs Ian hasn't talked to either Eppes brother since they hunted down a black box together. He's been a little busy with this.
  • R Respite, Buffy/X-Files Two heroes sorely in need of a vacation run into each other. They also run into tea, cocoa, conversations about vampires, and really good pancakes.
  • S The Scent of Salt and Wood, Rivers of London/Forever Kissing a perfect stranger in an alley is unusual behavior for both of them.
  • T Time Upon A Once, Amber Chronicles/Wizard of Oz/Fairy tales A thorny tale of 1 missing prince, 2 princesses, 2 cats, 3 witches, and a silver bird. Some overlap possible among categories; partridge in a pear tree not included. Drinking while reading not recommended.
  • U Unanswered Riddles, Riddlemaster of Hed She woke in the night knowing that her doom had missed her by an hour at most... and that it was still waiting for her. So Lyra got up, and packed, and went to meet it.
  • V Vintage Appreciation, Forever Knight/Southern Vampire books (Charlaine Harris) Two vampires discussing rare vintages.
  • W White Horses and Tails, Nero Wolfe/Highlander Saul Panzer never forgets a face, or where and when he saw it. Connor MacLeod has lived, and done business in, New York City for two centuries, off and on. In combination, that can lead to a problem.
  • Y You See Two Geek Geniuses and Several Computers, Leverage/Warehouse 13  They were in a maze of twisty passages, all alike.

X & Z don't have titles.  I shall have to fix this. 24/26, and 291 works.  Nice!
(If any links go to the wrong fic, let me know and I'll fix it.)

rhi: A cappucino, my name written in the froth. (cappucino)
So I asked some friends on a Discord server what items they had from their families and still used.  It came up because I was making tea and using an old metal ball tea-strainer I'd inherited from my namesake great-aunt, who, honestly, left me a lot of things.  And I was wondering what the rest of you have inherited and still have, and which ones do you still use?

I have furniture, and baking gear, and a cookbook from the 1950s from Aunt P.  Mom gave me kitchen stuff for my first apartment in college and those nested mixing bowls are still good and useful (and uncracked; I held them up to the light to see) after at least 60 years and gods know how many moves.  I have a Webster's Unabridged Dictionary from one of Dragon's grandmothers, easily 6" thick of marble endplates doorstopper from the 1950s and honestly, if I have to look up something, it's probably in there.  His other grandmother gifted me cast iron we still have.

What about the rest of y'all?

Oh, and as for what I found?  Aunt P's cookbook has recipe cards tucked in and two recipes written on the front end paper.  Might have to make these cookies soon.

The last ink of Inkvent is Good Tidings, a black with serious hunter green sheen.  Applied thickly, say with a paintbrush, this stuff looks like dark green upholstery velvet. Writes smoothly, a nice black even when there's no sheen.  I'm not sure this is what I expected for the 25th, but hey, it's pretty!

Am I caught up on fic prompts?  Lady, no, I am not.  Nor worrying tonight, quite honestly.

Inks:  Okay, most of this set spoiled me.  Most.  Although, I'd like to say, Diamine needs a better font for these, because when people are reading Vibe as Vile, that is not the message you wanted to send.
