Human-Animal Bond: Benefits to Health and Wellbeing. Sagely Speaking with Mary Bono Podcast

Mary Bono, Rick Rockhill, Sagely Speaking podcast

This week I was a guest on the podcast Sagely Speaking with Mary BonoSagely Speaking with Congresswoman Mary Bono is "a thought-provoking podcast of interviews with experts from diverse fields…exploring a wide range of topics from the opioid and fentanyl epidemic, social issues, politics and policy to personal development, shedding light on important issues that impact our society."

Mary Bono is widely recognized as a national leader on multiple issues, including addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery. She currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Mothers Against Prescription Drug Abuse (MAPDA).

I currently serve as a MAPDA Ambassador, to lend a voice to raise awareness, provide support, and advocate for policy changes relating to the challenges associated with prescription drug abuse and the inherent dangers of fentanyl. So how and why did I end up as a guest on the Sagely Speaking podcast?

In my capacity as a MAPDA Ambassador I started thinking, how can I contribute to this conversation? Why are so many people affected or know someone impacted by prescription drugs or addiction?

My professional background is in the pet industry, so how do I fit in? Well, it started with our company, Lucy Pet Foods and our manufacturing plant Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods. We ensure that our Employee Benefits package includes a robust Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Then, during normal employee meetings we introduced the topic of prescription drug abuse, and the danger of fentanyl. We shared information from MAPDA to our employees in the employee breakrooms and tried to remove the stigma of discussion, and to let them know help was available. Our approach was to merely start with a conversation.

While this was a good first step I started thinking how do I, as one individual use my professional experience and knowledge to help people and their families dealing with the challenges of addiction or recovery?

As I reflected on my 30-year career in the pet industry, I realized that I have had extraordinary experiences with service dogs, therapy dogs, and support dogs. I've seen how animals help people.

During my 13-year career at Petco, I was an early participant at HABRI (Human Animal Bond Research Initiative a non-profit research and education organization that is gathering, funding and sharing scientific research to demonstrate the positive health impacts of companion animals.

Incidentally, the HABRI website is an excellent source of information. It explains that “the human-animal bond is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that is influenced by behaviors considered essential to the health and wellbeing of both. This bond is beneficial to the mental, physical, and social health of people, and animals.”

Without question, there's a strong relationship between people and animals, which has a genuine impact on the health of individuals, families and in our communities.

Not only are people are happier (and healthier) by having pets, but there is a growing body of scientifically documented benefits of the human-animal bond. Health benefits such as decreased blood pressure, lower anxiety, and enhanced feelings of well-being.

Given all this, it occurred to me that the topic of the Human-Animal bond and the various benefits to mental and physical health would make an interesting topic for the Sagely Speaking with Mary Bono podcast.

If you have time to listen to the Sagely Speaking with Mary Bono podcast, this all makes sense and flows well.

I wanted to share a few others details here that I didn't have time to expand on during the podcast itself.

Addiction Recovery & Pets

  •      People in recovery should discuss with a professional therapist first.
  •      Assuming the person can sufficiently care for themself, a pet can help provide calm, relaxation, give purpose, encourage exercise, socialization, bring joy.

Addition Prevention & Pets

  •       Pets may help “fill a void” in the person’s life.
  •       Pets give a purpose, reason for living, knowledge that someone depends on them.
  •       Lack of compassion, affection, isolation, self-worth.
  •       Provide an opportunity to play, experience innocence through a pet’s view.

Important to Know before getting a pet…

  •       Pets require time, commitment and money- this is very important to understand.
  •       Match a pet to your lifestyle and home (dog, cat, fish, bird, do you want an active dog breed vs lazy dog breed, etc.)
  •       Do research on the pet to understand their needs.
  •       Adopt a pet at a local shelter. So many senior pets need homes!

Other advice…

  •       If you know someone who is dealing with issues in their life, have a conversation about whether a pet might be beneficial.
  •       Never surprise someone with a pet, they must have commitment and willingness.
  •       Dogs do best when trained properly. The more you put into them the more you get out of them.
  •       Feed the best food you can afford. Better nutrition early in life saves you money down the road with vet bills!

Full disclosure, my company Lucy Pet Foods is also a sponsor of the Sagely Speaking with Mary Bono podcast. It was just serendipity that this all came together!

The Pet Show Radio Show with Warren Eckstein visits Lucy Pet Foods' Pet Food Safety Lab™

Image
Rick Rockhill on air with The Pet Show
Today, radio veteran Warren Eckstein did a live remote broadcast of The Pet Show from inside the Pet Food Safety Lab™at Breeder's Choice Pet Foods plant, owned by Lucy Pet Foods in Irwindale, California. Warren had a chance to tour our plant, meet members of our team, and most importantly to see for himself how extensive our Quality and Safety Testing protocols are for our Lucy Pet dog and cat foods. The first two hours of the show were live on local Los Angeles radio station KRLA am/870 which was followed by another two hours on the National Broadcast of The Pet Show Program. All four hours of the shows ran live and are archived on Warren's YouTube Channel (link below).

Warren interviewed Joey Herrick (our CEO and founder), Steve Lunetta (VP Quality) and me (COO), where we discussed our standards for pet food safety, pet food nutrition, and some of the less than desirable practices of some of the more unscrupulous brands in the industry. While we didn't "name names" we didn't shy away from spilling the tea on what some companies do. More importantly we each had an opportunity to share what we do at Lucy Pet Foods to ensure our foods are the very best and safe for your dog or cat.  There were a number of people on hold who called in to ask questions, yet even with four hours we didn't even come close to answering everyone.

Long time readers of this blog know how passionate I am about animal nutrition and pet food safety. It has been such a privilege to now be a partner in our own pet food manufacturing plant. We have direct control over the raw materials we buy, the testing of every ingredient before we use it, testing "in process" while we produce, and then safety testing before we release each production. That means people can use Lucy Pet Foods and know that we have gone through extensive steps to make high quality, safe food for your pet.

Warren is a terrific person, very knowledgable about pet behavior training and animal advocacy. We are grateful to him for being so generous with his time interviewing each of us to share our story about Lucy Pet Foods, our Breeder's Choice Pet Foods plant and our incredible Pet Food Safety Lab™. You can watch the show here and check it out for yourself.

Breeder’s Choice invested one million dollars in the Pet Food Safety Lab™ and related facility improvements. Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods, originally established in 1947, is currently celebrating its 75thanniversary this year. Since it was acquired by Lucy Pet Products in December of 2020, the company has invested significantly in its people, infrastructure, quality, safety and new product innovation.

The new Pet Food Safety Lab™ enables Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods to offer expanded testing services to its co-manufacturing brand customers and is creating new jobs within the community as the lab boasts a staff of Food Chemists, Microbiologists, and Lab Technicians.

The grand opening is a culmination of nearly eleven months of planning, development, and construction. “Every decision we make starts and ends with quality. From the nutrition formulations, raw materials we source, people in our plant, and the Quality Safety testing at every step, everything we do contributes to the pets who eat the foods we produce.” said Joey Herrick, CEO.  “This was a major project for us in the midst of COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions, everything took longer than we anticipated.” Herrick continued.

Since its inception in 1947, Breeder’s Choice has produced super premium pet foods and built a reputation for quality that is unrivaled in the industry.  After recent acquisition by Lucy Pet Products led by industry legend Joey Herrick (founder of Natural Balance Pet Foods), Breeder’s Choice has taken quality to a new level by building a laboratory strictly dedicated to analysis of pet food raw materials and finished product.

In addition to testing for known microbiological and chemical containments, the new lab includes DNA testing of proteins and dedicated PCR testing capabilities (Polymerase Chain Reaction). PCR is a highly accurate way to diagnose certain diseases and genetic changes. With PCR, the PFSL has the ability to assure that pet food has been vigorously tested for any dangerous microbiological organisms before any product is released to the market.  Further, the state-of-the-art liquid chromatography system equipped with a triple quad mass spectrophotometer detector (LCMS) can test for a variety of contaminants as well as verify nutrient/vitamin levels.

The Pet Food Safety Lab™ also launched is website www.petfoodsafetylab.com to post results of routine testing of pet food with a Certificate of Analysis. Consumers will be able to visit their brand website, look for the Pet Food Safety Testing link, and using the “Best By” date code from their bag of food, view the results of the testing for their specific pet food’s production batch.

The PFSL is headed by Steve Lunetta, Vice President of Quality and Safety and Jay Trivedi, Senior Manager of Quality and Food Safety. Steve Lunetta has a BS (Chemistry) from UC Riverside, MS (Chemistry) from UC Davis, and MBA from Lake Forest in Chicago IL. He has 25 years of experience in pharma, diagnostics, nutraceuticals and pet/human food industry. Jay Trivedi has a BS degree in Food Science and Technology from Cal Poly University, Pomona. He is a PCQI Lead Instructor Animal Foods, certified SQF (GFSI system) auditor, and has over 25 years of experience in the pet foods, human foods, and cosmetic industries combined.
