Why PRESTO?
PRESTO was created to help evaluate how shared autonomous vehicles could serve communities. Each pilot tested different technologies, service models, and operating environments — all while collecting real data on safety, accessibility, ridership behavior, and public perception.
PRESTO Autonomous Vehicle Program
CCTA’s PRESTO program was designed to test the future of shared autonomous mobility in real-world settings. By launching three first-of-their-kind pilot projects in Contra Costa County, CCTA explored how safe, accessible, and sustainable autonomous vehicles (AVs) can improve local mobility options and complement existing public transit.
Looking Ahead
Together, the three PRESTO pilots provided over 4,600 rides and logged more than 100,000 autonomous miles across diverse community settings.
Through these demonstrations, CCTA and its partners gathered essential data on safety, accessibility, technology performance, and public acceptance — helping shape the next generation of shared, autonomous, and connected mobility solutions in Contra Costa County.
Overall, these three projects have helped CCTA better understand how to deploy this technology to the public – and as more innovative technology is developed, CCTA will be ready to bring it to Contra Costa residents.
