Background:
An episode by episode summary of the series.
Personality:
Graduating students of Susin High score top marks in all university entrance exams. These students have ranked first for entrance into Seoul National University for 5 straight, consecutive years; they are driven, smart, compassionate... Jo Youngjae is none of these things. He is not a thinker, and booksmart is pretty much opposite of what you'd call an apt description. How he managed to make it into Susin initially is shrouded in mystery. Rather than smarts, he would rather leave the thinking to someone else, and take their idea and run with it, even if it's completely off base.
Youngjae is infamous amongst the students of Susin for being unpleasant, brutal, and a downright nuisance. They call him the plague, which says a lot more about his unbearable presence than anything else does. The plague, an unpredictable and unstoppable force, and an outright pain in the ass to whoever he sets in his sights. And everybody in his vicinity. And also everyone he's ever met? He's pretty much intolerable to absolutely everyone walking the face of the earth.
Having a nickname like the plague brings a lot of infamy with it, and Youngjae is notorious in his habits of cheating, bullying, extortion, blackmail; you name it, he's done it, and probably earned a ton of money from doing so, too. Other people's well being means very little to him, and he'd rather be comfortable, entertained, and rich than bored and surrounded by waves of people who find him tolerable.
He is every bit the stereotypical bully, all braun and force with about as much brain as a brick wall. Youngjae is prone to act before he thinks and allows himself to be swept up in his emotions time and time again. Rational reasoning and thought have no place in the head of Jo Youngjae, and if he comes to a conclusion he's going to run with it, no matter how ridiculous it might seem, and he will actively ignore information that contradicts whatever claim he's making.
However, all of this is a front to cover up the fact that Jo Youngjae is a coward. What he doesn't understand unnerves and frightens him, and there's a lot he doesn't understand. Rather than adapt and learn, he'd rather go around with a baseball bat and beat the shit out of his fears in exchange for safety. Yoonsu once remarks that the cowards are the most violent, and this rings the most true for Youngjae.
See, the thing about cowards? Despite being the most violent, they're also the most weak. Fear is a pretty overwhelming trait of Youngjae's, and everyone around him knows it. He's a weak link, and if you're eager to get someone to break under pressure, Youngjae is barely a stone's throw away from being there on his own. It's not difficult to draw the line between his cowardness and his penchant for violence; for things that are out of Youngjae's control, he feels much safer when he's feared himself. Nobody bothers someone they're afraid of.
There is a safety in intimidation and hate. The worse Youngjae gets, the more people fear him and the more people hate him--this is what he's after. Trust... friendship... these things aren't what Youngjae is all about, and he doesn't understand them. Hate is very simple, and Youngjae is a very simple guy. Friendship has all kinds of ups and downs and complications, but hate is very straightforward, and hate is very simple.
But not once in his life had Youngjae ever hated himself before meeting Yohan.
He's honest with himself. He knows he isn't a good person, and he doesn't have the desire or the energy to pretend otherwise. When he's called out for being weak, for being a coward, for being heartless, he admits to every charge. Yeah, he's all of those things, so what? So is everyone, he's just able to admit it to himself. At one point, he asks if crying after you've betrayed someone suddenly makes it heroic. Betrayal is betrayal, but his makes him the bad guy? Get real.
He comes across as having a lot of existential issues. He talks a lot about how he's twisted, he's wrong, he's bad, but then goes on to wonder why all these things are so. What makes something so reprehensible when he does it, but when others do it it's fine? What is it specifically about him that is so bad? He can't wrap his head around it.
Because he is so simple and because he is so easily frightened, Youngjae is incredibly easy to manipulate. He's a snowball atop a steep hill, and all he needs is a tiny push in order to go careening off, collecting force and intensity as he goes.
But he isn't dumb, definitely not. Simple, yeah. Cowardly, for sure, but never outright stupid. He knows when someone is trying to provoke him, and he knows when he's being manipulated. The deciding factor in how he reacts to both is his state of mind and what kind of harrowing emotional turmoil he's in.
Lastly, good god does he hate being pitied. While talking about his past with Yohan, the way Youngjae formulates his sentences and carefully picks what he talks about suggests that he's actively lying in order to make his childhood seem normal and unworthy of pity. He can't stand to be looked down on or treated like he's made of glass.
Abilities:
None whatsoever.
Alignment: Thras, for fairly obvious reasons. Youngjae lets fear dictate a large part of his life, close to the entirety of it--the way he chooses to present himself, the decisions he makes; all because of fear and a desire to be hated, not liked and not pitied.
