History

A passion for developing efficient processes to improve the productivity of early discovery labs led Laszlo Varady, Ph.D., to found Rilas Technologies in 2009.

Rilas has created a series of focused, groundbreaking services whose sole purpose is to free scientists from routine work and offer unparalleled purification and analytical services allowing more time dedicated to pursuing scientific discovery.

THE RILAS TEAM

Laszlo has built his career successfully creating scientific advantages that help businesses reach their goals.

With 30 years’ experience in organic and surface chemistry, separation science and biochemistry, Laszlo’s comprehensive understanding of both synthesis and purification is unsurpassed. He founded Rilas Technologies in 2009 to offer groundbreaking services to medicinal and biochemistry labs that are tasked with meeting both operational and scientific challenges.

Prior to founding Rilas, Laszlo worked as a Vice President at Anthill Technologies, where he managed the company’s high throughput purification and analysis. Laszlo spent almost nine years at ArQule where he managed the Application Development group and developed solid phase synthetic methods on Agarose leading to a set of ligands for protein affinity chromatography.

Before working at ArQule Laszlo was Director of Surface Chemistry at PerSeptive Biosystems where he developed a wide range chromatographic stationary phases based on a coated polystyrene for biomolecule separations.

Laszlo got his M.S. in Chemical Engineering and a Ph. D. in Biochemistry from Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He also completed post-doctoral work with Professor Csaba Horvath, Ph.D., of Yale University, and Professor Fred Regnier, Ph.D., of Purdue University. Laszlo holds numerous patents and has published multiple papers.

President & CEO

Matt Crawford is originally from the North Shore of Massachusetts and received his B.S. in Biochemistry from Tufts in 2019 followed by an M.S. in Bioengineering in 2020. Since then, he has spent time in chemistry and biology labs in both academic and industry settings.

Outside of the lab Matt is an avid SCUBA diver and rock climber, spending as much time outdoors as possible during the Summer. He also applies 3D printing to both his hobbies and lab work, whether it be a piece of custom lab equipment or an electric bicycle component.

Senior Scientist

Julia Giessen is the Director of Communications at Rilas Technologies. She began working at Rilas in 2014 and has since been part of the team helping to grow and expand the company and its offerings. With her background in project management and illustration she works closely with the entire Rilas team to execute project goals and keep everything running smoothly.

Julia received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and lives and works in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her husband and daughter.  Outside of work, Julia rides horses and loves to paint and do art and crafts projects.

Director of Communications

Nathaniel Jorgenson received his B.S. in Bioinformatics from Rochester Institute of Technology. During high school he interned in the Operations department at LabCentral and then graduated with a certificate in Biotechnology. He is also a proud alumnus of the BioBuilder Apprenticeship program. Nathaniel brings a strong work ethic and zeal that makes him a valuable member of the Rilas team.

Bona has been with Rilas since 2016 and in his role as Associate Scientist working off site at a customer’s lab, he works primarily with small molecules specializing in chiral separations. His experience working in many different labs has given him a strong background not only in the sciences but also in communication and understanding the needs of the clients. His positive attitude and good nature make him a pleasure to work with every day.

Outside of work, Bona has a passion for running (aiming for an upcoming marathon), exploring new places, hiking and the outdoors, as well as reading and film. He’s always eager to learn more about anything and everything.
