I’m a single mom of two young kids. We live in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. My firstborn has Autism/Aspergers. I’m expecting my younger child to be diagnosed with ADHD sometime this year. We live on Income Support.

For those of you unfamiliar, “Income Support” here is just the latest of the many politically correct terms for welfare.

“On da WAC” is a local-to-Newfoundland phrase used to describe people receiving this kind of assistance. It is just one of the many widespread derogatory terms used to refer to welfare recipients.

These are my thoughts, experiences, struggles – and hopefully a few triumphs – from a path no one truly chooses.
