Sustainability

Overview
Rollout is dedicated to creating vibrant, liveable, and ecologically sustainable spaces. Our extensive catalogue of bespoke wallcoverings is carefully curated to feature patterns and murals that transform walls into artful, biophilic design elements for a range of commercial clients.
The wallcovering sector of the Interior Design industry has traditionally been dominated by vinyl products whose environmental impact raises concerns with respect to input materials and recyclability. Rollout has long been discomforted by this dominance, and has been working hard to lead the transition away from vinyl materials toward more ecologically-minded substrates.
In this document, we assess several environmental, social, and economic considerations that pertain to our industrial sector, and we detail specific actions, timelines, and responsible parties for implementing changes and achieving our targets.
Partnerships for Sustainable Procurement
For several years, Rollout has been proactively working to transform its catalogue into a showcase for wallcoverings that are printed on environmentally friendly substrates. We look forward to a time when 100% of our sales are specified on sustainable materials such as Terralon. However, given the general ubiquity of Type II vinyl wallcoverings as the current go-to substrate for the design industry, we foresee a period of transition in which those who typically specify Type II vinyl for their wallpaper projects are educated to think about and trust its eco-friendlier alternatives.
Currently, Rollout is able to print any of the graphics from its catalogue onto sustainable, PVC-free Terralon. However, this option is not widely known among the clients who sample and specify our patterns, and Terralon is not yet their default sampling substrate.
To address this, we are working with our sampling distributor, Material Bank, to offer our entire catalogue of graphics as pre-printed Terralon sample sheets. This is a multi-year exercise which began in 2024, and will likely conclude in 2026. Each of the 500+ SKUs in our catalogue must be reviewed and revised to include new sustainable substrate options, and these assets must then be published to Material Bank for distribution. As our range of Terralon samples grows, we will privilege this substrate in our marketing and promotional initiatives and encourage our stakeholders to consider including it in their project specifications.
Ideally, we want our customers to immediately think about Rollout for the freshest design options. After they’ve found what they need from our catalogue, they should not have to think too hard about requesting and receiving those designs on eco-friendly substrates by default. Terralon should be automatic and thoughtless – the obvious best choice. We’ll know we’ve hit our Sustainable Procurement goals when 80% of our sales are specified on Terralon.
Reducing Carbon Footprint
Through our partnership with Material Bank, all samples and product orders are shipped carbon neutral. The print shop facility offsets 100% of its operational electricity through the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).
We continue to work with our Canadian and U.S.-based suppliers to increase efficiencies in production, delivery, and transportation, ensuring the use of the most current technologies and procedures that reduce our overall carbon footprint.
Our automated, North American-wide sampling platform is strategically located adjacent to its outbound shipping hub, minimizing transportation distances and logistics costs while achieving highly efficient distribution of wallpaper samples.
At Rollout HQ, we also prioritize energy efficiency. Simple practices, such as shutting off circuit breakers at the end of each workday, significantly reduce phantom power consumption within our building.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Central to Rollout’s business model is print-to-order wallpaper. This means that we never carry stock, and as a result have no need to print large quantities of material that may never come to market. Eliminating inventory also eliminates the need for warehousing, and so we avoid the carbon footprint of such spaces altogether.
As a normal part of our client relations, we present detailed digital mock-ups for each project. These diagrams help us visualize the placement of each wallpaper panel, and minimize waste in both the printed material and resulting off-cuts.
Finally, we encourage our clients to return their samples to Material Bank for restocking when no longer required, which helps to reduce waste. If Material Bank is unable to restock the samples, they are donated to schools and institutions for students to use in art and design projects.
Promoting Social Equity
As always, we will continue to foster a healthy work environment that values equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of our business operations. We believe that happy employees are the ultimate guarantor of a sustainable workplace.
Although we are not pursuing office certification at this time, we proactively seek to staff our studio office with talented people from a wide range of backgrounds, communities, and life experiences.
