2:03 pm - Brief update
A discussion on FB reminded me how I miss live journal. So, I (like some others I know) am going to try to update more.

I plan to sit down and write up a 2013 recap, but I want to get some things done around the house today too since all of my appointments cancelled! One had a scheduling conflict, another sick, another changed to tomorrow... weird. But, I'm going to use it to my advantage. I've already hemmed some curtains that needed hemming (I just cut them to the right length and hung them earlier this year) and made another curtain to go over the window in the door that faces the back stoop. Next, probably dishes. Really need to do dishes...

One note I thought I'd pass on. If anyone is working on being healthier in 2014 and enjoys some accountability/challenge, there's an LJ group that is set up for it. Pretty small group, nice people. Basically once a week everyone comments and the person running it makes a little chart. It's for weight loss (so you weigh in each week) and you can add your own weekly challenge if you wish (like meatless monday, work out x times a week, whatever.) Anyway, if you want to join in, here's a link to the new challenge starting this coming weekend.

http://weight-comp.livejournal.com/145820.html

Ok, to the dishes... Then maybe rearrange the freezer.

I finally wrote up a report of our marathon... you should read it. It includes pictures and, I think, a pretty amusing tale :)

2:04 pm - Selling a bunch of jewelry to benefit charity!
I'm raising funds for the leukemia and lymphoma society for our race. Our deadline is approaching very quickly and I have a ways to go!

So I've decided to sell off a bunch of the jewelry I've collected over the years. Make a donation for the amount and the piece(s) are yours. So still a tax deductible donation and you get bling!

Check it out, I'm not even done posting yet... So check back later as we'll!

10:45 pm - About My First Marathon!
Sorry for copying my email, it is the easiest way to journal about it. It explains why I'm doing it & links my fundraising/training blog. Despite the copy/paste, please read it anyway!

Hello Friends and Family!

A few years ago I decided I wanted to become a runner. I've thought this many times over the years, but didn't do too well with the execution of my plan. I would try to run for a week or two... Maybe you saw me. I was the chunky chick with the bright red face, sweating profusely and gasping for breath, looking like a water buffalo stuck in a mud pit. Yup, that was me. Well, this time I was not only determined, but I had a plan (couch to 5k, it really works!) and I had support from my dear girlfriend, Faith. It made all of the difference. It's still been crazy hard, but I've stuck with it. At first my goal was a 5k. Then a 10k. Then a half marathon (13.1 miles!) I've managed to do all of those things (although it wasn't pretty, I still sweat like a pig and turn bright red) and I'm still pretty surprised with it. Now, I've set my sights on a marathon. Yes, even I think 26.2 miles is insane. But hey, it's good to have goals, right?

9:08 am - A Marathon? Holy Crap!
Guess what? I made it a goal to have run a full marathon by the time I reach 40. I decided this year was the time to do it, it's best to be ahead of schedule :) Well, to be honest, I thought I should do it this year, just in case I fail for some reason... I've got another year to do it. Fatalistic thinking - but no worries, I'm determined!

My partner Faith and I decided to participate in the Team in Training fundraising/training group for our marathon. We are raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Faith, as some of you might know, is an infusion nurse (administers chemotherapy and blood/platelet transfusions), working with many patients battling these diseases. We each hope to raise over $3,200 by race time... which is in June of this year!

If you aren't familiar with TnT, it's an awesome way to do a marathon. You join up, raise funds to a certain level (hopefully higher) and in exchange the TnT group helps you through all of your training and pays for your race and associated travel. If you are curious, up to the minimum donation amount 70% goes to the LLS site, 30% covers the race and admin costs. Past the minimum donation level, 100% goes to LLS. So if you have any interest in doing a marathon that is for a good cause, definitely check it out. It's a great opportunity as well to go to races you might not otherwise be able to afford. We selected the Rock & Roll marathon in San Diego.

Keep an eye on my fundraising page for updates on donations & our training! For the next 6 months, it will be my running blog. I'll talk about the whole process (and some random stuff too, most likely.)

And, please consider donating a little something to the cause. Any amount helps!

We're doing the runners world holiday running streak. Run at least a mile daily from thanksgiving till Christmas, want to join? :)

We did about 5 miles on a paved trail near DC today (visiting family.)

Too sleepy to write more. Cheers

9:25 am - VOTE!
I don't care who you vote for, or what your politics are... but you had better get out and vote if you haven't already. There is no excuse not to!

If you don't... you are part of the problem that makes government just not work.

9:40 am - And now...
Once the tattoo was light enough that I could cover it, I started working with an AMAZING tattoo artist in Boone, NC. I sent her picture of the existing mess and multiple pictures of various 1/2 sleeves that appealed to me. She toyed with the idea, they drew up images and I went down to see her last week. She had a bunch of unique flowers, from those I picked the ones I liked. We figured out colors and she went to work. Over 8 hours later I have something I'm damn proud of. It says bad ass and feminine all at once, which is great for me. It will have a bit of touch up to be done once it heals (bound to happen when you do that much work in one sitting - a few places where ink is light, a few places where the old shows through so we need to layer darker color over it, but all in all it's amazing.

7:06 pm - Tattoo!
I've had this tattoo I hated on my bicep for literally years. It's a long story about impulse, design changes, cover ups and finally laser removal sessions.

Well, it finally was light enough to do a decent cover up of my own design, I finally found an artist I liked, and I had the money. So, Sunday we spent over 8 hours at the tattoo shop and I got it done. It looks AMAZING. I can't believe how beautifully it turned out. There are a couple touch ups, but I love it.

Dang, my phone won't let me select pictures. I'll post them when I get home.

6:18 pm
I'm way over due for an update on here, but to be honest life has just been too busy and stressful to do so. I guess I could at least somewhat explain that...

1 week trip to vegas for a pool tournament, which was pretty awesome and fun. Our team made it to tied for 65th place, which isn't bad considering the number of teams playing (APA nationals.) Also some friends got married which was bitter sweet. It was wonderful to see them so happy and to be a part of it all, but it was also the first wedding I've been to since the separation, so it was tinged with sadness for me as well. We got some touristy stuff in and it was nice to get away for a week.

The downside to this trip was it overlapped with the start of the semester. So while I was there I was tagging back and forth with professors so I wouldn't be too behind and wouldn't get dropped from the roster for not showing up. So when I got back it was a major scramble to catch up.

Add to it that within a day of returning I got hit with the VEGAS PLAGUE. A bunch of our team got it as well. Started with the flu, which lasted a couple of days. I was *miserable*. Then once I started to feel a tiny bit better I got hit with some kind of cold/bronchitis kind of crap. I was sick to one degree or another for almost 2 weeks. But, I couldn't miss any more classes... so I sat far away from others and just felt like crap.

Over lay this with fighting the administration over an instructor from last semester. I won't bother typing it all out, but basically she completely flaked out part way through the semester. When grades were finally posted, things didn't seem right. I emailed her and she never replied. I wound up filing an official grievance through the school the day before I left for Vegas to see how my grade was calculated and see all of my work to verify I got the grade I did. So while in Vegas I was fielding emails related to this (it's a major process.) When I got back, sick and on 3 hours sleep with jet lag, I had to meet with the department head, then the assistant dean. In the end I was able to justify my complaint and prove that I actually earned an A, not a B. *

Then... in the middle of this week of sick I got some really hard news. Not going to talk about it on here, but it really was tough on me. The amount of stress I was under multiplied by many times.

We filed for divorce (we've been separated about 1 year and 8 months.) We waved all of the waiting periods etc and got a court date. We've been talking off and on about doing this for awhile. The delay was purely financial.

Then yesterday we went to court and the divorce was finalized.

To say I'm wiped out and feel as though I've been run over by a steam roller would be an underestimation. But, hey, that's life. Ya just keep on truckin' as they say.

Ok going to a movie with a friend (which I agreed to before I realized how tired I'd be after a huge test in the morning followed by a day of working on separating our financial accounts now that we have the divorce decree.) Here's to hoping I don't doze off during.

* Since I filed my complaint a number of other students have come forward, resulting in other grades being changed. A full investigation has been going on and the teacher went on personal leave. The rumor is that she's now been suspended, but no idea if that's the case.

9:25 pm - Vegas baby!
A quick post from Las Vegas! Our pool team won the district play offs and that earned us a free trip to Vegas to compete in the national tournament. We arrive late Wednesday night and we are here until next Tuesday. We've won all of our matches so far & we play again tomorrow morning at 8 am (yikes.) fingers crossed that we continue to do well!

We have done a little touristy stuff... We walked through the Tropicanna, circus circus, the Venetian, and new York new York. We played a few slot machines (neither of us are gamblers) and wandered some souvineer shops. We have other plans too, but they have to be worked around pool matches.

Also, tomorrow nights 2 of our friends and team members are getting married in the stratusphere! The team is their wedding party :) ok, tired of finger typing, I'll try to do a write up later.

2:24 pm - Omg the heat
We've been running at 100 degrees or over, positively miserable. Then yesterday the ac died yesterday! So yesterday was running around buying fans and calling for a repair person (they come tomorrow) and today we went to mom's to get a window ac unit. She got it a couple years ago when her ac died.

So now we are holed up with 2 dogs and 2 cats (who have a great dislike for each other) in our bedroom. Leaving the room is brutal. It's 87 degrees in the house last I checked... There's one more cat, but she really didn't want to join us, so she's in the hot part of the house.

My exercise has gone to hell, thanks to the horrific heat. Can we turn summer off please?

4:34 am - Alabama
So we are on our way to Alabama to visit Faith's parents. It will be my 3rd time seeing them, my second time going to their house. We purposely plan a short visit because we can only handle so much back-woods Alabama & overly conservative, religious parents. Faith has been out to her parents for about 8 years, but they still think it's a sin that would send her to hell. They referred to her last girlfriend (of 4 years) as her roommate. Me, they like me better, is referred to as her friend.

They are southern cordial, so it's ok. If they say anything unpleasant, it's when they catch her alone that she gets cornered with "why did you turn your back on god?" poor thing. So I stick close by.

Well, it's a pain to update on the phone, so back to audiobook, Hold Me Close; Necromancer.

3:53 pm - Pool
So I realized that my last post said that I'd post about the pool tournament soon and I never did!

I don't have much time because I have to head to work soon, but I thought I'd do a real quick post about it.

Faith and I play on an APA league team. No that doesn't mean we are awesome pool players. They work on a handicap system making it so that teams of all skill levels can play competitively against other teams of various levels. It just matters how well you play considering your skills and how well your team does with strategy, coaching, etc.

Anyway, our team qualified for "cities." This is the district tournament for all the pool teams in our area. If you win at "cities" you are given a spot at the national tournament in August, held in Las Vegas.

...

We won!

We get a (mostly) expense paid trip to Vegas in August to play against other teams nation wide!

I've been to Vegas for nationals once before, with a different team when I was with my ex. It's a big deal and very very cool that I get to go again. Here's to hoping our games improve (or at least maintain!) through Vegas!

8:46 am - A few random bits
I want to post about the big pool tournament this weekend, but that would be a decent amount of typing and I have to leave here shortly to do a wound dressing change for someone and a massage for another person after. So maybe this afternoon...

But I guess I could catch up a few other things.

Weight loss: I've stagnated some because school got crazy, then I had the big race, then money got a lot tighter and I cancelled weight watchers. Luckily I've managed not to regain anything, just haven't been making the progress I was. So I've stayed about 12 lb down from where I started.

Running: I've been running, but only in small chunks. Since the 1/2 marathon I've not ran more than about 3 miles in a stretch. I find it harder to run if F isn't running with me, I get antsy about all the things I should be doing (homework, housework, stuff related to mom and so on.) But, on the good side, she's is almost completely recovered from her stress fracture. She managed about 3 miles the other day without pain. It still gets tight and tired, but not painful, so I should have my running buddy again soon! And, I have been keeping up with exercise, just not to the same extent. I've been doing shorter jogs, we went swimming once, a few bike rides, and I got a groupon thingy for pole dancing classes... I can't wait to try it :)

School: going well. I finished last semester's killer line up with an A and 2 Bs. I am more of an A student, but that was a tough semester. I was thrilled to end up with a B in Chemistry. The new semester started this Monday... and although it's a crazy fast semester (a 16 wk class taught in 10 weeks) I think I'll enjoy it. Teacher is nice and I like anatomy (except all the memorization... but that's ok.) I have my all day CNA course on Saturday this week...

I guess that covers the high lights. I'll write about the pool tournament soon. For now, I should start getting ready for my day,

12:51 pm - Race Report: My First 1/2 Marathon
Ok, I finally have a moment to sit down and write up my race report from my first half marathon on Saturday. I ran in the New River Half Marathon. It was in the beautiful North Carolina mountains, which is why I picked it. The pictures on the website were just amazing and it was a decent sized, but not an insanely big race. For the 5k, 1/2 and full marathon a thousand people ran.

Quick details: My first time ever running 13.1 miles (highest was a little over 12 in training.) I started running for the first time with couch to 5k about a year and a half ago. I achieved my goals - which was to have run, finish and enjoy myself. :)

That means my time was a pretty slow, 3 hrs 8 minutes. In my defense I chatted with people, stopped to take pictures, and even took a few moments to just breath in the fresh air on the river banks. It was a great time. It was how running should be (in my opinion!)

Quick update entry... Successfully completed my first half marathon with a time around 3 hrs (times haven't been posted online and I forgot to check while there.) it was a great experience and other than an all day headache of varying degrees I feel pretty good. I'll write up a full report later :)

10:16 pm - Night before my first half marathon
So here I am, in a bed and breakfast in the beautiful north Carolina mountains, the night before my first half marathon.

The things that are positives: I ran 12.5 w/ intervals 3 weeks ago with essentially no problems, so I'm not stressing the distance, surprisingly (it's 13.1 miles for my non-running friends.) I'm having a relaxing, quiet evening in a bed and breakfast that doesn't even have tv. I'm excited about it.

A few not-as-positives: Faith found out yesterday that her foot pain was in fact a tarsal stress fracture so she is not able to run. We don't pace the same, but running in the race together is good emotionally and psychologically! Especially for a big first race like this. Also, I've had a couple rounds of tummy cramps... That's awfully concerning. I don't think it's nerves, because I'm not overly nervous. I hope I didn't eat something disagreeable. Tummy stuff is much more nerve inducing than the idea of running the race! Fingers are crossed for that.

Guess we'll see what happens! I'm hopeful for a successful completion and nothing more :)

Oh, did I mention we are in the mountains?? What was I thinking? I hate hills!

12:50 pm - Weightwatchers update
It's going very well :)

Weight lost: 14.4 lb

Measurements:

Waist: down 4 in
Hips: down 3/4 in
Arms: 1 in
Bust: 2 in
Thigh: 1.25 in

Still running at least 2 days a week. I want 3-4 days a week, but school has been royally kicking my butt :-/ Feeling really good about my running progress though. I have a rugged race this saturday (5k with obstacles) and on May 5th I have my first 1/2 marathon in the mountains. Last saturday I ran my first 10k (about 6 miles.)

Also, our CSA started this week - bring on the farm fresh veggies weekly!!

12:39 pm - School Update
Remaining for this semester:

Chemistry: 1 exam, 1 quiz and 3 labs. Current grade 76%... honestly I'm thrilled to have that grade and hope that I can maintain it (gold star if I can improve it.) This class moves at lightening speed and it's my first time ever taking chemistry. I'll be happy beyond measure when it's over.

Math: 2 exams, 1 quiz remaining. Current grade 95%. Very happy with this, since math has never been my strength.

Medical Terminology: 2 exams remaining. Current grade 87%, I'm hoping to bump this on up to an A with the last 2 tests.

Considering it's a tough semester (math and chem at one time, for me??) I feel ok about it all.

Summer semester: Anatomy and Physiology 1 & the certification classes for CNA. Should be a lighter load, except it's a 16 week course crammed into a 10 week summer semester. Here's to hoping I don't got a bit insane :)

10:46 pm - So much going on
Down to the last 3 weeks of school, which means way too many tests and too much homework. Math is going surprisingly well, I have an A. Chemistry is the never ending, fork in the eye, gawd-awful class. I have a C so far but am not feeling confident at all. Considering a lot of people have to take it more than once, I guess I should feel good about that, but instead I feel like I could easily bomb the last 2 exams and voila, have to retake the damn class. Medical terminology is going ok... the teacher is an idiot and sucks at putting together exams. These 2 factors have made my grade lower than it should be (B.) I'm hoping to pull it to an A with the last 2 exams, but no clue on when I'll have time to study.

Also, I decided today to change to a different work location. I've debated it ever since moving to Durham but I always put the thought away because I like my co-workers and feel a responsibility for my clients. But, I recently came to the decision that I'm sick of making choices based entirely on other people's impact. So, my clients will find new, awesome therapists and my co-workers will do just fine without me. I will save myself about 15 min of driving and 10-15 miles of wear and tear + gas each day I go to work. Plus, this location is right by easy shopping - making running to the store before or after work much easier. So... that happens in 2 weeks. I'll have to learn all new co-workers and find new clients, but I'm sure it will all work out fine. Oh, I'm also going back up to 3 days a week instead of 2. I'm just wayyyy too broke on 2. As in majorly dipping into savings and credit. Studying and grades will be a bitch, but you do what you gotta do.

Also, I registered for summer classes. I'll be taking anatomy and physiology + the CNA certification classes. Fingers crossed about all of that going smoothly.

Ok, I mostly posted because I'm dreading doing any more chemistry studying. I have a big exam tomorrow and working on the study guide tonight showed me how little I know about organic chemistry. Um, yay? *sigh*

11:05 pm - Various updates
weight watchers: down 7 lb, which is great. However, yesterday was so terrible that I'm already negative for points for the whole week! We went out to a very fancy dinner with family, then Faith and I went out and spent the evening having drinks at a couple bars. Eep. I either need to do some serious exercise over the next couple days or throw up instead of eating (LOL.)

exercise: as I posted, we did an 5k and it went AWESOME

Personal: I decided to finally get evaluated for ADHD. I've suspected it for a long time, and my mother is diagnosed with it (and about the worst case I've ever seen - she is one VERY scatterbrained woman to say the least - but I love her ;) ) I went to an ADHD specialist and was diagnosed with the hyperactive style of ADHD. Interesting to finally have a diagnosis. My PA gave me a medication patch, which is a new thing. I've been trying it for the past few days and sadly I have to say... doesn't seem to do anything. I'm going to email her tomorrow to see if she has any ideas.

School: Going ok, but definitely still struggling with Chemistry. I'm stressing because I have to get over a 3.0 in my math and science courses to even be considered for the nursing program. *sigh* And normally I'm a 4.0 girl, but science and math are my hardest subject and I've never taken Chemistry before - so it's like a whole new language and science for me: all compressed into a fast course in a busy semester while working. I'll be so glad when this semester is over. Sadly I have another chemistry course I have to take as well.

I guess that's it. Definitely a short version. Just thought I'd say hi :)

1:40 pm - Just a little 5k in the rain
We ran The Great Human Race 5k in Durham yesterday in the rain. We are training for a half in May an I haven't done many races so far, but this race turned out great!

First off, I love rain runs. Keeps you cool, plus I just love the rain.

Second I hoped to beat my PR but wasn't obsessing on it. I keep in mind two tricks I had read on here, to pick someone ahead of me and plan to pass them, and to speed up and attempt to sprint when I was in sight of the finish line.

So here's how it went... It was a very hilly course. We don't run hills often enough, so that was a challenge for me. But, for the first mile and a half I "picked off runners" over and over (that felt awesome btw.) then I realized how tired I was getting, so I shifted to just trying to maintain a pace I could stick with considering the hills. Once I got in sight of the finish line (which was a pretty long distance away!) I kicked it up a couple notches. When I crossed the finish line I was astonished (and a bit queasy.) I beat my 5k PR by almost 9 minutes!

First ever 5 k last summer: 46 minutes (my first time to successfully jog 3 miles w/o stopping)
Second 5k on an insanely hilly, over crowded course mid summer last year: 44
Yesterday: 35!

I'm very proud. I went home and napped for 2 hours after a filling lunch (once my belly calmed back down.)

8:50 pm - Training
We are training for a half marathon in May. Technically we are ahead of schedule, but I feel like I have so far to go (literally and figuratively.)

Today was supposed to be my longest run, 9 miles. Thanks to blistering feet, warmer temps and feeling tired I walked damn near half of it :( I did 9.25 miles in 2.5 hrs. Around 14.5 min miles per hour... I am proud to have done the distance, but I in no way feel like I achieved a 9 mile run.

My biggest frustration is my brain... I start thinking about how much easier it would be to walk, and as soon as I cave once I wind up walk/jogging the rest of the distance :( today blisters caused pain, understandable. But, normally it's not pain interfering just ... Laziness? I need to figure out how to reprogram my brain.

Oh and welcome back warm temps... I get migraines when I run in the heat and I've had a doozy tonight :(

8:42 pm - First weight watcher success
As promised, here's the first update. I've been following the plan for about 10 days now & I've learned a lot. First and foremost that I was consuming a lot of calories I didn't realize. To stay within my points, I have to carefully consider each thing. Biggest culprits:

Half and half in my coffee
Lattes
Wine
Late night snacking
Restaurant food

I have been doing pretty good with staying on plan & those times I didn't (like a friend's very fancy birthday dinner) I still tracked. I usually just skip recording (which causes me to have no clue of my consumption, plus I tend to adopt "well if the day is already ruined" mentality.) so I'm proud of my tracking.

Anyway, my first real weigh in, beyond the initial one, was today. I lost 6.6 lb! Yes, I know that's too much for 10 days, but I was also in winter (heavier) clothes... I'm guessing 3-4 lb, but I'm very excited!

2:29 pm - Feeling Hardcore, and Frozen
So today was our long run... we are training for a half marathon. It's my first and my girlfriend's second.

What was going against us:

Cold, 40 degrees. Raining (supposed to turn to sleet later.)

My longest run so far (but only by a little.)

The strong urge to be lazy.

How it went? We encouraged each other and got out there. We bundled up, wrapped our iphones in plastic and hit the road. We did 6.3 miles with some killer hills mixed in. Took about 1 1/2 hours, so not exactly speedy. But we jogged the whole way :)

When we got back we were frozen solid. Toes hurt like crazy (did I mention wearing five fingers?) And of course, soaked to the bone.

But we did it. As we both sat on the couch in fuzzy robes sipping hot coffee, we decided, this finally makes us hard core runners. Ok, it's no ultra marathon in the desert or jogging through drifts of snow, but for us it was an accomplishment!
