Some important bullet points:
  • Please don't take L's picture ICly or capture him on video unless we're going for an interaction that involves him getting rid of the picture. It's a life-or-death issue in his canon. Talk to me about your ideas!

  • L always goes by an alias in game settings, usually "Ryuuzaki." He doesn't look very Japanese, so feel free to have your character ask him about the name.

  • If your character considers L a friend, the chances are that he's keeping much closer tabs on them than they're aware of.

  • L's exasperation with your character is never my exasperation with you, and his IC concerns rarely overlap with my concerns as a player. (In other words, while it's IC for L to occasionally be a jerk, I would not use him as a mouthpiece.)

  • In [community profile] thisavrou, L is a CRAU who spent several years in [community profile] ataraxion, often under significant stress (pull point is from in-game events around January 2015). The reason I apped a CRAU was mostly to skip the "new game culture shock" phase: he's used to being on a spaceship, aware of the existence of things like aliens, wizards, and elves, and slightly more likely to form bonds with other characters than in canon. But it means...

  • L is around 28-29 years old at his pull point for [community profile] thisavrou, and looks it. He could not convincingly pass as "twentyish" the way he does in canon.

  • If the Netflix film version of Death Note is the only version of the story that you're familiar with, it might be helpful to tell you that this L has a different background and history than the one in the film. While there are obviously going to be some similarities due to their similar roles in the story, original canon L was not part of a government program or anything like that, and is more or less British. The Kira case itself is also different in the original version than in the J-Drama and Netflix adaptations.

IC Information

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • Check out this post: Detailed physical description, good L fanart, and viable photo references.

  • Hair: Very dark brown, shaggy. Cut to around chin length in February, 2017.

  • Eyes: Dark grey, large and wide, heavy undereye shadows.

  • Height: 5'10.5"

  • Weight: ~130 lbs or so

  • Build: More important than weight. Thin and wiry, but with more muscle definition than you'd expect.

  • Race: Human, 3/4 European, 1/4 Japanese (which certain angles/expressions highlight).

  • Gender: Male

  • Voice: British accent when speaking English: specifically, mostly Hampshire + received pronunciation. This file is a good reference.

  • Scars/Tattoos:
    • A tattoo of numbers on his arm: CCO » 010 » 001
    • Scars on abdomen: From slashes and punctures by a shard/blade, well-healed

  • Notable:
    • Terrible posture, weird sitting positions, sometimes bird-like body language.
    • Tends to hold things very carefully, only on the edges or ends or only with his fingertips.
    • Looks somewhat older than he did in canon. (Youthful mid-20s vs stressed-out later 20s.)

Image

MEDICAL: No current issues aside from some mild PTSD, but in the past:
  • 5-6 years old: Car accident, major injuries. Whiplash, punctured lung, spleen issues.
  • ~20 months prior to pull point: injury to lower left leg near ankle (attack by mutated rat: bites and scratches)
  • ~6 months prior to pull point: major cut/puncture wounds to abdomen which left scars
  • ~2-3 weeks prior to pull point: treated for starvation and dehydration

ABILITIES (SUPERHUMAN/MAGICAL/ETC.): Nanites in bloodstream which allow for automatic translation of many languages and somewhat accelerated healing. Also, probably technically capable of emotional/physical empathy and memory transfer with other characters from the same CRAU, but that's currently irrelevant. L has a lot of normal human abilities like detection techniques and foreign languages, too.

SPECIAL ITEMS: N/A. Has a non-working communication device from his CRAU.

OOC TRIGGERS: Please don't take his picture or capture him on video.

QUIRKS: Made of them. Bizarre body language, frequently has his fingertips in his mouth or on his lips, bites his lower lip at other times, loves sweets (esp fruit) and coffee, does sleep but is able to stay awake for long periods when necessary. If you're interested in this subject, reading his app or watching a few episodes of the anime is a good idea. (I play from the manga, but the changes are minor enough that an anime viewing is fine.)

Permissions

Usually, the answer is "yes" if it's going to be fun and interesting and/or contribute to positive CR between our characters, "maybe" if it's short-term unpleasant for my character (bonus if there's give-and-take in the plot), and "probably not" if it's going to make my character a kick-toy for another character, especially long-term. I have more detailed permissions here, and I'd prefer that people read them if we're going to do anything major, but the following is a good overview.

PSYCHIC: Maybe! Ask me at the time. Psychic powers may not be used to divine L's real name unless we have agreed on it beforehand, and even if we agree, it must remain between our two characters.

AFFECTION: Open for shipping, but selective. Hugging and kissing are OK if the thread has progressed to a point where the other character is physically close enough to do it.

MAGIC: Talk to me. If it's helpful to him or doesn't matter either way, the answer is probably yes.

PHYSICAL: We should definitely be communicating OOCly if a thread is getting to this point.

CONTENT WARNINGS: L's imagination is probably pretty morbid, and he's definitely seen the worst in humanity. Once in a while I may throw in a brief reference to an imagined past case.

WOULD RATHER NOT PLAY: Rape/rapey situations. Being the subject of intense long-term torture that isn't directly relevant to the metaplot of a game. Some canon elements that might greatly constrain my playing past the point of fun, like shinigami eyes.

OOC

Permissions are mostly "maybe," but my preferences are:

  • Fast-moving threads. I'm willing to backtag, I'm just not great at it due to health issues. It's always OK to contact me about handwaving stuff in a dropped thread, or prioritizing your thread, or etc.: I'll do whatever I can.

  • No threadjacking on my posts by players who aren't also tagging me. Most people don't even look into threadjacking permissions, so having a stance on this issue is kind of moot (if you've seen me threadjack, it's in games where it was so common that there was no point in objecting to it). Why am I even bothering to leave it in this permissions list? A cry in the night, I guess.

  • No 4th-walling. I might be OK with this on very rare occasions… but L is a secretive character, and the concept itself is pretty cracky. If the other character understands how important it is to him to keep his secrets, is not going to blackmail him with it, and the player understands that it might initially make L regard the other character with a lot of suspicion/hostility, I might say yes.

  • Please don't recruit castmates for me without talking to me first. Castmates who decide to app on their own are something else -- that's not my call! -- but I'm really only ever "looking" for Naomi Misora, who nobody plays. I have a bucket of other DN cast preferences/permissions: we can discuss them if they're ever relevant.

IC

Again, mostly "maybe". Be sure we're talking before doing any of the following, even if I've stated here that it's probably OK. Context would be important, and some characters might not be able to get physically close enough to do some of these things.

My decisions, especially about the more intense stuff, are based almost entirely around wanting to avoid playing myself into a corner. I don't want L to be all angst all the time, and I want to be careful not to eliminate IC motivations to participate in the game's plot. It's hard to write a character if you can't think of a good reason, based on their personality, why they would be doing something.

I'm also not interested in acquiring a full-time dedicated Life Ruiner for him, because I don't think that kind of CR can usually lead anywhere but a frustrating impasse: most game settings are life-ruining enough.

  • Probably: Hugging, Kissing, Flirting

  • Context-dependent: Injuring my character, Stalking my character (he should probably notice), Using telepathy on my character (same considerations as fourth-walling), using magic on my character (what do you want to do?)

  • Probably not: Killing my character in a game with permadeath, mind-controlling my character (may say yes if it's mild and he has some recourse for future revenge)

  • Nope: I'm super uncomfortable with rape and "rapey" situations and for the most part do not want to be involved in them in any way as a player. Not triggered, just utterly repulsed by the idea of intentionally incorporating it in my entertainment.

Romance/Sex/Shipping:

Maybe.

Is he already shipped in the game? If so, then no. L is pretty cagey and deceptive when he wants to be, but not really a player romantically.

If he's not already taken, the CR has to be right, it will require some buildup, and I'm in it for the long haul because I don't app/drop games that often. Romance allows for development in the direction of intimacy and trust, which is otherwise very difficult for this character. We should discuss shipping before it goes anywhere, if it looks like it might. What I look for in a ship for this character is stability and blossoming trust between partners in crime.

I'm not that interested in playing out relationship drama past a certain point (there are always going to be issues, especially considering who he is, but I don't want to play out real abuse, cheating, death of the partner, etc.). It's not something I think he'd stick around for, and/or it would negate the attempts at development in terms of learning to trust people, or force me to play him through a long period of depression to stay in whatever game. There's no point in spending a lot of time building up and playing a ship if it would just confirm his tendencies to keep to himself, plus it's not really IC for his trust to be misplaced.

FWB-type sex might be feasible if he's not already shipped, but we should discuss it a lot beforehand. It'll involve tenderness without much real intimacy, and probably not a lot of character development, and would most likely be the occasional hookup and not a real ship. If the other character gets involved with someone else, he'd probably end it, for personal privacy reasons.

Finally, for ships and other extremely close CR, I would strongly recommend that you've seen or read Death Note (you can watch the anime in lieu of reading the manga; changes from the manga to the anime only affect L in a couple of scenes). L is a very complex character in a way that's easier for you to experience than for me to explain.

  • Preference for ship characters is for women in their 20s who are kind and pretty.

  • Preference for ship players: please be reliable and a good communicator. Ideally, if this ship is in a game, you have also read or seen the part of his canon that he appears in and/or we've discussed character dynamics ahead of time. I don't want you to be surprised by what a stalker he is.

  • L probably wouldn't make the first move, and is probably pretty inexperienced to begin with.

  • FTB is fine but I don't require it.

  • Soap-opera scenarios won't work for this character in a game long-term. No love triangles (if he's not going to win, he'd walk away before it got to that point; I don't think he's impressed with divided loyalties), no constant hurt/comfort where he's always in the comforter role. I also don't want to be dragged into negative CR with psychopathic or powered villains via a SO tangling with them: L is cautious, ruthless, and very cognizant of his lack of powers, and would probably eventually end the relationship to remove himself from danger.

  • The "nope" about rape and rapey situations bears repeating here.

  • I'm not into m/m, particularly with canonmates -- there aren't many male Death Note characters I think L would go for. I have zero interest in L/Light (worth mentioning so Light players don't waste their time or get their hopes up).
ryuuzaki: (L Change the World)
Essentially, L is a low-key Sherlock Holmes expy whose overall career vibe is more shadowy, political, and jetsetty.

He will be scrutinizing the heck out of your characters upon meeting them. He's observant, intelligent, and intensely analytical, but he's not psychic--that's where we draw a definite line.

His interests are in a baseline level of things like "more or less good/bad/honest/dishonest/smart/stupid" and whether or not he likes or dislikes a person: it's just a quick assessment based on impressions and behavior. He would also definitely notice things like your character's age, height, weight, ethnicity, any distinctive speech patterns, body language, and so on. He's skeptical of most people until he has a reason not to be, and when it comes to what he can figure out: it's a certain extent of how you are, not what you've done.

I can watch clips from a canon and say how I think he would initially react to a given character on a strict positive/negative basis, or based on their canonical body language, but any actual detailed knowledge has to come out through interaction and observation. Even things like whether or not he thinks of your character as smart or honest will come out mostly through threads.

You might want to tell me where to tread lightly; on the other hand, you may have some things you want him to pick up on for the purposes of interesting interactions!

There are a few other considerations:

- L is a CRAU from [community profile] ataraxion, with a pull point of January 2015. He was there for several years, which means he saw a lot of characters come and go. He wasn't close to many, but he may still have been aware of a different version of yours -- especially if they were from a canon set in space (space games get a lot of those). Some relevant canons he ran into: Star Trek (TOS, TNG, AOS), Star Wars (including EU/Legends), Battlestar Galactica, MCU (pre-AOU), X-Men, Heroes, various comics (DC, Marvel, Vertigo), Discworld, James Bond, Supernatural, Teen Wolf.

To what extent is it OK to incorporate this in interactions between our characters? He'd probably err on the side of caution in most cases, but on the other hand, you might want to use his previous knowledge as a CR shortcut, or he may be able to talk to your character about people who are important to them.

- Is L allowed to hack your character's private network messages where/if it's feasible? Do you want a heads up if he does?

- If you feel up to it, would you mind listing a few things that you think are safe to say would be common knowledge about your character for anyone who watches the network? This is just a timesaver for me and a way to keep all the information about other characters in one place: don't feel obligated.

This form might help us out (text in parentheses is just for your reference and can be deleted!):

What I'm looking for:

I enjoy most CR, or at least trying it out! Lighter threads are always fun, and not everything has to turn into a long-term storyline.

However, I'm always especially seeking "serious adult CR" for this character, because it's what he needs to be grounded in a game setting. The field the potential CR was involved in in their canon is less important than their relative maturity and intelligence, insight, or strategic ability. They don't have to have a mature persona at all times, just a mature approach to crises and/or an ability to get down to business when the situation calls for it. They don't even necessarily have to be an adult, but that would be the character's preference. (Good examples of similar CR that I've had for this character in the past: Inspector Lunge from Monster, Indiana Jones, Nathan Petrelli, Bail Organa.)

I'm also always looking for long-term/sustained CR: if a game clicks, I tend to try to stick with it until the end. You don't have to, but if you are that type, it's a bonus!

Some other ideas:

- Roommates: Anyone L shares living space with.
- Co-workers: Anyone he works with directly, anyone who has apparent authority.
- People who investigate things in their canons: Other detectives, cops, spies, adventurers, hackers, con men, whatever.
- People who like to weigh in on in-game events in a Serious Business way: Do they like to be involved in and discuss and even IC-ly theorize about game plot?
- Potential allies who are physically stronger than him: Helpful in a crisis.
- People who want to do martial arts training: They can practice together.
- Caring friends: He doesn't think he needs them, but he does.
- Cute girls: He has a canonical weakness for them and is not good at flirting. (If you are interested in shipping, it's best to tell me up front, because I never know whether or not to take hints seriously, and I'm not good at expressing that interest myself.)
- Repeat threads!

If we know each other, you can also approach me about possible PSLs here! Permissions and what I'm willing to play might be a little looser than in games, although my "hard no"s stand. Don't feel bad if you propose something I don't want to do: I'll try to come up with an alternate plan that will be fun for both of us.

If we don't know each other, you're welcome to introduce yourself.
