( History ) :
008 was born Pyunma, in a small country, Muamba, in West Africa. Muamba was originally a colony of the European country Glutonia. Glutonia was interested in the land because of the precious Metal X. Eventually, Muamba gained independence, only to be taken over by a dictator, Unbaba, who was kept in power by Glutonia in exchange for supplying them with Metal X. Pyunma became a revolutionary and joined a group of guerrilla fighters attempting to oust Unbaba and bring a better quality of life to the people of Muamba. Among those rebels were his friends Kabore and Mamado. Mamado, faced with his brother's death after a life of working in the mines gathering Metal X, had sworn that he would bring freedom to Muamba.
One night, while on a mission, Mamado and Pyunma were nearly caught by Unbaba's forces. Rather than allow both of them to be noticed, Mamado drew the guard's attention, allowing Pyunma to escape. Unfortunately, Mamado's efforts were in vain, since Pyunma was later shot and kidnapped by one of the robots of the Black Ghost.
The Black Ghost or the "Merchants of Death," created advanced weapons to assist in wars and create global chaos. One of their most advanced projects was creating cyborgs to serve as weapons- and this is where Pyunma's kidnapping came in. He was given mechanical lungs that allowed him to breathe underwater and given a number, 008, to designate him as the eighth cyborg warrior created by Black Ghost.
Pyunma was unwilling to serve as a weapon of war, so with eight other cyborgs (001 through 009) and the help of some Black Ghost scientists sympathetic to their cause, they escaped the labs where they were created, and destroyed the Island X laboratories of the Black Ghost, and kidnapped a state-of-the-art ship that could function as both a jet and a submarine. With the help of one of the scientists, Professor Gilmore, they fled to Japan, where they stayed with a man named Professor Kozumi, a friend of Gilmore's.
The Black Ghost sent several other cyborgs after the 00 numbers during this time, and also kidnapped Professor Kozumi. After rescuing him, the cyborgs decided it was best for them to move on. Using their stolen Black Ghost ship, renamed Dolphin, they began traveling the world, fighting the Black Ghost wherever they found them.
One such place was 008's homeland of Muamba. There, the cyborgs discovered that the rebel guerrilla forces had been sold a weapon by the Black Ghost. 008 attempted to convince his friend Kabore, leader of the rebels, to give up the weapon, but was unsuccessful until an attack on the camp revealed that the Black Ghost was selling weapons to Unbaba's forces as well. Those weapons were controlled by other cyborgs, who included 008's former ally Mamado. In attempting to understand what had happened to Mamado, and why he had turned against his country, 008 was kidnapped by the Black Ghost. After being freed by the other 00 cyborgs, Pyunma faced off against Mamado again, only to be forced to kill his former friend.
Shortly after, the 00 cyborgs were able to find and destroy the Black Ghost's base, and kill Skull, the leader. After that, the group split up, and Pyunma returned to Muamba, where he offered his help to villages around Muamba during a famine. He did not reconvene with the other cyborgs until a series of natural disasters occured the world over, which it was discovered were caused by a group of cyborgs modeled after Greek gods.
As time went on, more unusual events occurred, leading the 00 cyborgs to eventually conclude that Black Ghost organization still existed. During this time, the cyborgs investigated Von Bogart, the CEO of a suspicious manufacturing company, as well as the sudden appearance of animals with supersonic weapon capabilities. While hunting down one of these animals, Pyunma was severely injured. Dr. Gilmore was able to save him, but during that process replaced the skin on his torso, arms, and legs with a scaly material that increased his speed in the water. Although he was horrified by these unasked-for changes at first, Pyunma was still able to use these new modifications to help when enemies attacked the Professor's house. Shortly after, due to two girls they had taken in, Helen and Bina, the cyborgs learned that Black Ghost's new base of operations was deep under the earth, in a kingdom called Yomi. This is where the animals with supersonic capabilities had come from.
Knowing this, the cyborgs together decided to travel to Yomi and defeat the Black Ghost once and for all. However, before they were able to get there, they were ambushed by Black Ghost robots, and their ship, the Dolphin, was destroyed.

( Personality ) :
Of the 00 cyborgs, 008 is often distinguished as the only one who had combat experience before being kidnapped by the Black Ghost. It comes through constantly in his actions. Aside from being trained in hand-to-hand combat, 008 shows a good understanding of how battles work. He often knows what needs to be done, both when he’s piloting the Dolphin and when he’s outside of the ship swimming on his own. He is one of the main pilots of the Dolphin. 008 is also shown to have a good head for tactics. He contributes both to initial plans to get the cyborgs away from Black Ghost’s Island X, and to the plans for defeating their enemy, Cyborg 0010.
008’s background of combat also comes through in his ability to set aside something that’s troubling him in order to concentrate on a fight. This isn’t to say he stops feeling anything the moment there’s a fight. Rather, he has the capacity to put aside a troubled mind for the sake of helping his friends. When the cyborgs go to Muamba, Pyunma’s ability to do this is tested by his friend turned Black Ghost cyborg, Mamado. The first time he realizes that he is fighting his former friend, he is nearly defeated. The second time, when he actually goes to confront Mamado for turning against the country he once fought for, Pyunma is not only defeated but taken hostange. The third time 008 is put in a position to confront his old friend, he attempts to reason Mamado into joining his group and leaving Black Ghost, but when Mamado starts to attack, 008 is able to immediately shoot to kill.
Another habit this confrontation with his former friend reveals is 008’s tendency to keep his troubled thoughts to himself. When he begins to suspect that the enemy cyborg is his former ally, he doesn’t talk to any of the 00 number cyborgs about it, but rather withdraws and spends time thinking about it on his own. And when he goes to confront his former friend, he does so alone, without even informing his allies of it. He does so again, later in the series, after Professor Gilmore modifies his body without asking. Instead of getting angry about it and arguing with Professor Gilmore, he runs off to be by himself- though this time he doesn’t go too far away from the group. At another point, when they thought Black Ghost destroyed, Pyuna returned to Muamba, rather than staying with Professor Gilmore and several of the other cyborgs in Japan.
Being turned into a cyborg definitely exacerbated Pyunma’s combat-readiness and his quietness, but he didn’t start acting that way because he became a cyborg. While his reactions to his comrades from Muamba, and many of his memories of his time with them are happy, Pyunma still had that same tendency toward introspection. During one particularly significant conversation with Mamado, he doesn’t say much, but rather serves as a witness to Mamado’s promise to make their home a better place. Nevertheless, he longs for peace just as much as Mamado once did. He finds happiness in helping people, as he does in bringing food to a village starved by drought. The difference is that Pyunma rarely voices these thoughts, the way someone like Mamado, or his comrade 009 would.
008 seems to have a very balanced view of the world around him. He is fully aware of the horrible things human beings are capable of doing to one another, thanks to people like Unbaba and Black Ghost, yet he is still able to trust in those he fights alongside, whether they are the Muamban rebels or the other cyborgs. What Pyunma doesn’t do is insert himself into debates of morality, the way 009 so often does. Instead, he tends to wait for the others to reach a conclusion, and speak up once they’ve begun making a plan of action. It’s this habit that has kept Pyunma from getting into arguments with his comrades the way the others so often do. Being willing to learn from the others also helps. Most of the reason he is able to face the drastic changes Professor Gilmore makes to his body is a conversation with 004, who reminds him that he isn’t the only member of the group whose body is so visibly modified. What 004 is able to help Pyunma understand is that those changes can’t take away his humanity, and that they are also Professor Gilmore’s attempt to protect him, in the only way he can. Whether or not he is happy with the modifications, this conversation still helps him to set aside his own worries, and once again fight with his comrades.

( Questions? Comments? Concerns? ) :
Cyborg 008
Real name: Pyunma.
Age upon capture: 23
Abilities: Combat training, ability to breathe underwater. Later on, he gains a scaled sharklike skin over most of his body, that increases his speed of movement underwater.
Homeland: Muamba Republic, in West Africa. Formerly a colony of Glutonia, it achieved "independence" under the dictator-president Unbaba. The people of the country revolted, and with the help of the 00 number cyborgs, they were able to gain true independence. The source of these disputes was the valuable Metal X, which was useful to the industrialized world, and the cause of the fighting and Glutonia's involvement. Because of this, the region is still marked by war- some locations have land mines in them, for example. The people of Muamba live in villages with very little access to technology. During times of drought, they are severely affected. The area has elephants, and problems with poaching, as well.
Important figures:
Mamado: A former friend of Pyunma's. He made himself a diversion during one battle so that Pyunma could escape. His efforts were in vain, because Pyunma was later gunned down and turned into a 00 cyborg himself. Soon after, he discovered that Masmado had also been captured and turned into a cyborg, but one without the will to rebel against Black Ghost.
Kabore: Leader of the guerrilla forces in Muamba, and another friend of Pyunma's. He was briefly decieved by the Black Ghost into using their weapons, but learned better when he saw that the Black Ghost was also selling weapons to Unbaba. When Black Ghost's forces in Muamba were defeated, he promised Pyunma he would do everything he could to protect the country and bring freedom to the people.
