About SecondBite

SecondBite is a national food relief charity, making sure good food never goes to waste while people go hungry.

We rescue surplus food from growers, manufacturers and retailers, and distribute it freely to charities and community groups across Australia – turning what’s wasted into what’s needed.

SecondBite founders Ian and Simone Carson at Prahran Market

Humble beginnings

SecondBite was founded by Ian and Simone Carson AM in 2005 when they noticed the amount of good quality food being thrown out at their local market in Prahran, Melbourne, and decided to do something about it. They gathered friends and family and collected produce in their cars to deliver to a local food charity.

Initially they were collecting around 600kg of food, equivalent to approximately 1200 meals, from the market and two restaurants. Today, they have provided the equivalent of over 350 million meals to our charity partners across the country.

Ian and Simone firmly believe all Australians should have access to healthy food no matter where they live or what their circumstances, and are proud to be part of the conversation and solution for how many people regularly face food insecurity.
