Day 4

Huzzah, the vacation continues.

Today I have cleaned things that I rarely clean:

The inside of the stove (not the oven. I took the enamel top off the stove and cleaned the underside).
The bottoms of my pans
The dish draining rack
The fronts of the cupboard doors

Yesterday I spent the day with a close friend and her baby. I picked them up from the hospital and drove them home when the baby was 3 days old, but lockdowns and general covid precautions have kept us apart since then. He's now 7 months old, can stand, likes screaming and laughs at their dogs. He has also regressed in sleeping, so they have a sleep consultant coming on the weekend. My parents just had a housemate with insomnia if I was awake in the night.

It was another friend's birthday last week and I'm taking her out to dinner tonight. I have to decide whether to drive into the city (potential stress, uncertain timing, cost of parking, quick return home), or take the train (disruptions, but no driving, door to door). I might still catch the train.

House work is seriously physical compared to sitting as a desk all day. I have to be careful not to aggravate my arthritis. Because I have arthritis. It's in my right foot and the result of damage, not an autoimmune condition.

I was sure there was something else and yes, I got a filling today. The final one of three.

So much stuff, I am going to have a nap now.

Day 1

Hello,

I am on leave for two weeks and I have given myself two days of unconsidered rest for my anniversary (Friday) and Election Day (Saturday) and now I am trying to use my time for things.

So far I have learnt how to solve a Rubik's cube.

I learnt how to do the first layer many many years ago and it's taken my about three days to learn the rest of the layers with some deliberate learning. It has been interesting to feel the process become internalised. I set up mnemonics and now I need less of them because I can see what needs to happen. And I am familiar enough with the final processes that I am learning to see those too.

I am enjoying having something physical to fidget with and also that I can put it down more easily that putting down my phone.

The Labor party (central leftish) has been elected to government, which is a relief. And also the beginning of some work to ensure that they enact some actually progressive policies. The Greens (environmental + general progressive) look like they will have 3 seats (out of 76), including picking up two from the Liberal (conservative) party in Queensland, which is like a leap over the Labor party in terms of progressive swing. I hope the Labor party learn from that as well as the Liberals do.

This seems the best place to talk about things that are happening.

I am listening to podcasts while I work, which is excellent and I'm going to run out soon, because it means listening to about 6+ hours of podcasts a day.

At the moment it is You're Wrong About, Maintenance Phase and Bad Gays.

It's my birthday on Saturday and I am having a small party. It is exciting to be doing something. It also feels good that I have invited just the friends I feel comfortable with in a particular way. So it is going to be relaxed and fun.

I think I helped my dad with a bit of a breakthrough in understanding his dad, who was a bit of dick.

As a precursor to this, my partner and I went on holiday when my parents and brother for a few days. My partner played croquet with my dad, who let my partner have two shots for every one of my his. Because my dad is pretty good at croquet. And I think that it is something that my grandad would have done. He was good at that sort of making sure everyone was having a good time. And he played golf, so he understood handicaps.

Later that week, my dad was talking about his dad's teacher who could see auras and said my grandad had a good character. My dad said - so she could see auras but was a bad judge a character. I suggested that grandad was actually a good person who was screwed up (what with the poverty and the war and the weird religious upbringing). Which is why we have the concept of generational trauma.

i: woohoo! a second weekly post.

1. I am catching up with my friend tomorrow again along with another friend of ours. OMG, socialising. Organising socialising. I have plans with another friend for next weekend. Her endless patience with me never calling her back is so appreciated.

2. Today I am having dinner at my mother in laws because she came home from being away and discovered a mouse had drowned in her toilet and she needed my partner to come and take it out.

3. We made dinner last night for a friend and her house whose housemate was experiencing psychosis and lacks family support.

Both those things aren't great in and of themselves, but the feeling of being able to help is strengthening.

4. I have not started to read anything new, so I think I will re-read the Riddle Master of Hed trilogy, which is just about my favourite book.

5. If I am going to keep doing this I need new icons and probably a fandom or two.
