New occurrences with critical raw materials found during mapping in Småland

The aim of the mapping project SGU is conducting in northeastern Småland and southeastern Östergötland is to investigate and sample the bedrock with a focus on occurrences of critical and strategic raw materials, and to improve our understanding of when and how these formed. The investigations under 2025 have discovered additional occurrences with critical raw materials.

The map viewer "Bedrock 1:1 million" gives an overview of Sweden's bedrock. The information can be used as a basis for very general planning, analysis, research and education. The map image is adapted for presentation at a scale of 1:1 million, which means that the information is generalized and not intended for more detailed use.

Here you will find SGU's geological data in various subject areas. The information can be used in your own GIS programs, for example for analyses, searches and combinations with other data. We offer data in several ways, for download in different formats or via API and Web Map Services (WMS).

Critical and strategic raw materials

Our society and industry have a great need for raw materials, of which metals and minerals constitute a large proportion. The EU has therefore listed 34 raw materials that are considered critical and/or strategic.

Mapping in northern Småland and Östergötland

The Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) launched a mapping project in 2023 focused on northeastern Småland and southeastern Östergötland. The project is divided into three subareas: Skrikerum, initiated in 2023, Västervik, which started in 2024, and Åtvidaberg, scheduled to start in 2025 or 2026.
