What to wear?

ImageLast night before bed, I was able to eek out a little bit of play time with my Shadow Warrior and hit RR76. For those who have been there, they may know that this is the magical rank where you can wear four pieces of Sovereign gear, and get two bonuses from the set (Ballistic Skill and wounds). What these means, is that, if you want, you can do a mix of Warlord and Sovereign gear to have the BS/Wounds bonuses from each, and say goodbye to your Invader for all eternity.

You don’t have a lot of choice in what you’ll be wearing, being gated by renown rank, so you’re stuck with the Sovereign boots, gloves, amulet, and shoulder pieces (much thanks to Rancid and his WARdrobe for picking up Curse’s slack here, and doing it better as far as I’m concerned). The rest of your gear will be the warlord stuff (including the amulet). The highlights of the loss from previous invader/warlord setup is -1% ranged crit, +2% to be crit, and loss of the 60 hp/4, however, in return you should gain about 15 wounds, 10 BS, 80 toughness, a bit over 80 weapon skill, and about 100 extra armor.  Yeah, 80 toughness and weapon skill, that’s pretty big. I was sitting at about 530 weapon skill in skirmish stance. I’m going to be (very) slightly more squishy, but my killing power should increase significantly against heavier armored targets.

It’s a great tradeoff as far as I’m concerned, particularly in light of all the high rank players that are around now, and the gear creep that comes along with it. My survivability stays relatively unchanged, and target diversity increases, and Gorfang has a lot of Destruction tanks, DoKs, and players who have an IV drip of their favorite armor pot. The more armor they stack, the more valuable my weaponskill becomes.

Fitting in

Image

This is the stuff I look at every day.

In the space of EVE, how you fit your ship is one of the most important decisions you will make every time you undock from a station. The only thing that I can think of that holds the same level of importance, decision-wise, is what comes immediately before that, figuring out what you want to do. When you look at the blank slate of  a ship, with all its various options open to you, deciding what you want to install is like deciding what career you want to play. Deciding what quality of fitting you want to use, is like deciding if you want to run around with greens or mythicals, except anything is available for a price.

Some Shadow Warriors have all the luck

Image

Snare Proc, woot!

And apparently, it’s my Shadow Warrior. I don’t play mine a lot anymore, mostly when solo, or when just farting around for a little bit of time. Or when my other characters are locked out of the city. He still needs to get RR70, and the rest of his set of Sovereign gear. So, when the city opened up Sunday morning, I took my SW in there all by my lonesome for some good, stance-dancing fun. After an instance full of split-arrows ward checking after being made a Champion, I was blessed with this insignia-trivializing weapon. I have no reason to do scenarios anymore outside of pure fun and renown gain. It’s my favorite part of the game, which makes me sad that I’ve lost a carrot, but happy at such a great piece (slight scoreboard brag after the jump).

New Threads

ImageI finally hit RR69 last night while delivering an absolutely stomping to destro in a city instance. We showed up, looking for a fight and thinking if we got stage 2, bonus, and we got one for the majority of the seige. Stage 2 didn’t happen, but the 600 some to less than 200 kills my Casualties of War told me about made me a happy man. You may wonder why RR69 is so great, and it’s because I finally get to wear my warlord helm and wear the mixed set of gear I’ve been waiting to get into for a long time. I now have double strength and wounds bonuses, so cheers!

Have a good weekend all, I’ll be surveying a building again today, so I’ll be mostly incommunicado.

I’m almost “there”

ImageIt’s easily argued that MMOs are all about progression. The reason we play them is to become better in a game, through an investment of time. Whether its increaseing skills, ranks, levels, gear, or personal gaming ability, we’re looking to reach a point of competency (I would say excellence, but many are satisfied with just being adequate). I, and others, often find it good to set goals and benchmarks to shoot for. Being able to focus upon an objective helps to maintain clarity, consistency, and staves off any feeling of being overwhelmed in games that boast huge variety and options as a core paradigm.

In WAR, once you’ve reached level 40, most people start aiming for a minimum renown rank, to allow them to wear a base set of gear. Some shoot for invader, dark promise, conqueror, or even as low as annihilator for what it is they want. Of course, there are other things people strive for in terms of gear. Weapons, jewelry, cloaks, and the whole array of possible pocket items. Whatever it is, there’s often some set build of equipment they are looking to reach to be able to do what it is they want to do, and everything after that is just gravy and pure fun.

The Hotness

ImageI just actually read through the newsletter that WAR sent out for this coming month. The letter covers a variety of subjects from the patch, to the live event, and the oh-so-surprising Scurvy Dogs scenario (Werit Holmes, can I get a “Boo-ya-ka-sha!”?). And while these things are neat, nifty, and spiffy. I want to talk about one particular aspect of the newsletter that really stokes my fire. It was a particular mention in regards to Scurvy Dogs, the details, if you will.

“Be blasted into the air by sea mines in 6 vs. 6 close-quarters combat. Gyrocopters and Zeppelins fight to dominate the skies as you work with your team to control key areas on the Ironclad.

Become a dread pirate as you unlock the achievements within the Tome of Knowledge and see if you can earn the title “Dread Pirate”.  And if that doesn’t sate your appetite for booty, then 25% more medallions might put some wind in your sails!”

Notice the hot, hot bolded and underlined portions.

Set This Up

ImageYesterday for work, I had to drive for just over 300 miles. It sucked, but it did give me a lot of time for thinking, and other than my normal listening to talk radio, and physically feeling my blood pressure rise at the ridiculous crap that goes on in government, I had time to think about my other favorite hobby: gaming. I was thinking about my DoK and my SW and the gear they are currently in, what gear progression I was working towards on them, and the cost/benefit of those items.

Particularly I started thinking about sets, and set bonuses. I know it’s hard for some of the WoW generation to remember, but there was a time before set bonuses. WoW was the first “traditional” MMO to make use of them, it really was a ported copy of a concept from Diablo II. Hell, the entirety of WoW was little more than an elongated, more complex version of Diablo II (but that’s a different topic all-together). I remember when I first started playing EQ2, I hauled my CPU over to my friend’s place with a buddy, and the three of us jumped into the game together. We were shocked when we got gear with stat bonuses on them from early levels! Set bonuses were never even in that game till much, much later (Echoes of Faydwer I believe).

So, what has led to this seemingly new staple of modern MMOs? Why are set bonuses used?

Gear Grind?

mortarI don’t get it.

I’ve been reading in a few places lately, about people who are upset with the obtaining of gear in WAR. In particular, the obtainment of PvP gear. If you’ll look back over my blogging history, you’ll see that I got my full Annihilator set in less than a month, Sentinel I got shortly after. My Darkpromise/Conqueror took a bit, but that’s not because I was having bad luck with drops, it was my inability to get into a group to do Lost Vale and the fact that my server rarely sees fortress captures. All of this was before the implementation of the token system. So what’s the problem?

Lost Vale, I’ll find you soon

sentinelI just finished a run of Sigmar’s Cryps with some guildies. I’ve been trying all week to get in there, with no luck, always missing a tank, or a healer, or something. In any matter, my streak of good luck continues, and I just got my Sentinel Shoulders. Huuzah, 4/5 greater wards means I can am more than geared for any group considering a DPS to go in with them. I only need to get the sentinel boots to drop, or gain about 1.5 more renown ranks and I can wear my conqueror boots, sealing the deal for 5/5 greater wards. I don’t know what this gearing problem people are having, but it’s been a walk in the park for me.
