Tales of Hate, Entry 10

ImageToday is July 1, and I will be posting this on July 16, 2010, and will be the final post of the series for now.

Gorfang destro has seen a massive shift the last couple of weeks. Whereas before destro was always the underdog, fighting and scrapping for every win, of late, they have been the zerg. The force that runs over all opposition. They have been steaming down order, and breaking through the doors of Altdorf on a consistent basis. So frequent is this overwhelming assault, that the other day, order had three underdog points. Three! Obviously, my fun factor has dipped dramatically. I really enjoy being the underdog, and every time I log on Kaah to see a zerg, my desire to play vaporizes faster than an illegal alien outside an immigration office.

The class is still fun and interesting, and I think with more rank, gear, and maybe even a team to play with, he could be ridiculously nasty. A three-man assist train led by a Blackguard should bring the fear of God into the hearts of any target it falls upon. The kicker is that the career is getting some changes they have asked for. I like them sort of, but they are giving up a lot for it. They are getting a mirror of the Iron Breaker armor debuff, and the strength/willpower buff, but losing their disorient AND their morale stopper. Those are two biggies to say goodbye to, and it makes me sad. However, in the spirit of greater realm parity and similarity, it’s the right move.

It was an interesting weekend for my Blackguard. I got to play a bit here or there, and even do a city siege. As I said from the get-go, I’ve been keeping mostly on the down-low about my character, but not being overtly sneaky about him. If people found out who I was, so be it. I wouldn’t lie, and outside of my forum signature on the Alliance forums, I don’t advertise my identity on him. That said, if you’ll reach back in your memory banks, you’ll remember a post (a couple of weeks ago for you) where I talked about some awesome drama and an ex-guildie. Luck would have it, that I ended up in a city siege with him. Within minutes of his guilds arrival, I got chatter asking if it was me.

I confirmed.

After a couple of weeks of debate, I did decide to reactivate my Blackguard’s account and keep it active quasi-permanently. Meaning it may go forever, it may go till these posts start going live in July, or it may go until 1.3.6. Reasoning totally dependent on my mood, the tides, and whether my daughter laughs at my silly noises in the morning. Completely arbitrary. Still, I played a bit this weekend, and had a good time at it again. Kaah is firmly into RR41, and quickly making way to RR42. As usual, I was enjoying almost insta-pops the entire time I was playing him, but sadly, none of my guildies decided to commit in any serious fashion to their destros since everything in house has returned a happy equilibrium.

A new (or so old, I forgot it) and interesting experience was pushing zones to the city starting early in the AM. I wouldn’t call it fun per-se, but it was interesting. What intrigued me the most, was the behavior of the people I was zerging with. As I said before, I’m doing this whole thing completely unguilded, so I am going with the full experience of a friendless, unsupported, unknown nub. I make full use of all the systems in place to bridge the gap as much as possible. I make liberal use of open warbands to mooch as much healing as possible. I’ll frequently run into a lake, hit “L” and join the biggest warband I can. If they look like they’re doing something semi-productive, I’ll run over to them, and fight in their general direction/area.

Of course, I’ll be in queue for a SC.

I hit a bit of a benchmark over the weekend. I reached renown rank 40. It’s not major, but it’s another mastery point, and it’s always been that dividing line in my head between “early game” and “end game”. It’s the indicator of leaving the lower level stuff behind. It’s not even half-way to the cap as far as renown points go (that honor falls on RR69.5), but it’s an indicator, and that means something. Judgement at this minor stepping stone: I like the class. Almost enough to make it full time.

I made almost the entirety of renown rank 38 last night, I’m a smidge away from 39. I logged on, and did scenarios for the entire time. The only delay from hitting the queue button and getting a “please-accept” button was at the very beginning, when I had to synch up with whatever groups were out there. I used that time to run south of Martyr’s Square in Praag. Once I got my first scenario, I literally never moved a step from that spot for the rest of the night. It was awesome.

I played 10 scenarios, and they ran the gamut of available instances. I had ones that started off even and fresh from the start, to imbalanced to one of the sides, or already in progress. Still, I walked away with 7 wins and 3 losses, totally pugging it up. I noticed that the loses really started coming closer together as I approached 10:00 PM EST. I had a  good time though. Even as a total pug, I had a blasty-blast. People died, I died, enemy healers were hopefully cursing my name or spitting frustration at the site of me. If I was able to walk out of a scenario having made a healer or two’s experience worse because of it, I felt accomplished.

Tales of Hate, Entry 4

ImageToday is May 4th, I will be posting this on July 8, 2010.

I almost spilled the beans today. A post by one of our server’s more famous forum trolls made me giggle on the inside, given my play on this Blackguard of late.

I’ve been looking into the different specs for the class, and trying to theorycraft what would be the best type of build for the career. I’ve lurked on the various forums, trying to glean as much information as possible from the more veteran players of the class, and have come to a bit of mixed information. Everyone seems to agree the class is very gear dependant, and that’s fine, a lot of classes are. My Shadow Warrior in particular was heavily reliant upon the best gear. Still, there seems to be a couple “core” tactics that are chosen by all, and then the last two seem to get mixed up based on personal preference.

Tales of Hate, Entry 3

ImageToday is May 3, and I will be posting this on July 7, 2010.

I used a little bit of my time over this weekend to spend some love on my Blackguard, it was before the announcement of 1.3.6 and its ability to have characters of both realms on the same account. It makes me think this whole thing was for naught, and I’m wasting my time on this side project, but I’m an obstinate fuck like that, so whatever. I’ll keep at it until July 4th, and then I’ll see how things go from there. As an incognito player, I’ve been puzzled by Destro as a whole, as far as it’s culture and community go from “inside”. I’m hoping that in the weeks to come I can get a better view of it, as I spent the last two weeks capitalizing on the renown bonus for my “mains”.

Still, in the short time I’ve been playing Kaah, I’ve been sort of surprised at the interaction, or lack thereof really, with the destro community on Gorfang to date. When I go into lakes, there is very rarely any open warbands even showing on my interface. When there are shown, even chances are that it’s a bugged display, or that it’s limited to guild/alliance only. I think I’ve run with an open WB two times so far, and one was early in the AM for a zerg of the zone. No one seemed interested in doing SCs, or really conversing outside of the generated messages of what objective to hit next.

Tales of Hate, Entry 2

ImageToday is April 26, and I will be posting this on July 6, 2010.

I only played my blackguard a little bit over the weekend, the recent double experience and renown has led me to put some heavy focus on my “primary” characters. Namely my Knight and a little bit of my Shadow Warrior. Still, it wasn’t without rewards, the little bit that I played still got me to renown rank 35 and about a quarter of the way through that.

Additionally, it had been so long since I played the character, that when I went dumpster diving in my bank, I found some gear that was superior to what I had currently. So bonus to me, I got a decent glaive that doesn’t look like the retarded LotD one from the PQs. I’ve seen some of the higher-end ones that have the crazy axe-head. It seems that the higher rank weapon you get, the more it resembles a halberd. Sadly, I far prefer the look of the sinister glaive / naginata. Don’t get me wrong, the halberd is a classicaly vicious weapon, used commonly by European Knights, but it lacks the sleek, curved sex-appeal of the later two weapons.

Tales of Hate, Entry 1

ImageToday is April 21, 2010.

Last night I decided that I am going to write in advance a series of articles on my experiences as a Blackguard on the same server as what my Order characters are on. I’m going to keep my actions to myself, and try to see what it’s REALLY like on the other side of the fence. This is going to be a tricky experiment, as I’ll have to maintain a presence on my Order characters, as well as still play my Blackguard enough to get a pulse and feel of the other side of the fence.

In no way do I plan on sharing information or communication from one side to the other. This is a bit of an experiment, like spending time with the apes. I believe a few people know what my BGs name is, like my guildmates in general, but it’s not super common knowledge. I haven’t tried to hide his identity, but I haven’t been flashing his name and existence everywhere I go. I hinted that I would be playing him for the next couple weeks as a side thing, so that should buy me a bit of time.
