10:09 pm - Xorg configuration troubles
Image
aboyandhisrobot
I just installed Slack 12 tonight and overall I am very pleased, however, I'm running into some problems with my xorg configuration. I used Xorg -configure to generate my xorg.conf file. That worked fine in and of itself, but when I maximize windows in X, they go beyond the actual workspace. I've done a bit of research and my initial guesses would have been either the virtual display settings or xinerama, but neither of them are loaded in my configuration file. Perhaps someone here, if you've experienced this problem before, can point me in the right direction? Behind the cut is my current xorg.conf file for reference. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

edit: To be more specific, windows always maximize to my largest possible resolution, 1600x1200, rather than my current resolution, 1280x1024. They do not however expand beyond my largest available resolution.

edit 2: issue resolved. I had to use xorgconfig and Xorg -configure generated files and mash them together so that all settings were specified, especially with the "Screen" subsection. Thanks anyway.

7:48 pm - Slack Musicians
Image

Does anyone here use Slack to write music with? If not, perhaps you can still help me out.

I've been trying for the past few days to compile a midi sequencer called seq24, with little success because i'm lacking certain dependencies which are native to gnome, but apparently not included with slack 11. Specifically it asks for gtkmm-2.4.0 or greater which in turn asks for more and more dependencies. Installing everything from source seems to be an inefficient way of solving my problem, so after that I tried installing the minimum installation from freerock gnome, which worked fine in and of itself, but was still not enough to get seq24 to compile.

Has anyone been able to get this app to work in slack before? If so, how did you do it? And if not, does anyone have any tips for getting the appropriate gnome dependencies working?

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Image

has anyone tried it out yet?

the 2.6 kernels that come with slack 11 install dvd seem to be able to detect enough hardware to get an install going.. just remember to place "noapic acpi=force irqpoll" after your desired kernel choice.

... normal video playback on my hp compaq nx9005. I've just changed xorg to xfree86 and everything works fine. Although there were some problems with libXfixes.so.3 but i've found it in the official slackware packages... Interesting, why xorg and xfree86 has different compatibility with some hardware? With IGP320 which is in my laptop xorg uses standart VESA driver when xfree86 has a special support for this chipset...

P.S. i feel i'm in love with this OS %)))
P.P.S by the way, why this post has a date of 2003 year???

FYI: just in case anybody's not on the slackware-security mailing list, a whole bunch of security patches went up over the last few days.

Hello everybody.
Is there any diagram of dependencies between Slackware packages? If no why? May be it's not a bad idea to have one.

so, i'm sorry for some delay with slackbox, but i done some work on it.
Now i have a problem with russian community server - crew.org.ru (it doesn't work now) and i can't upload to cvs and web some my issues with slackbox.

in this case i want for somebody to make a more stable mirror for slackbox website, prefferable i want to get the working cvs on this host, web, and mail server (i don't want to use any of the corporative mail accounts), he who is wants help me on this question?

Ofcouse - main targets for the slackbox
- stable production distro
- a good, not_so_big main core
- an easy way to port/compile to any other hardware platform
- continuing a slackware distro main way - "it's just works"
- an easy like on slackware `/etc'
- more issiues with security (i mean fixes and (maybe) source-code audit)
- unicode (and patches for this purpose) by default
- own linux kernel source-code tree (for audit, own patches, some fixes, etc for good life;))
- making good features (in example we're can add to ifconfig the iwconfig, so why? it's a good when network ifaces set-up together by one utility)
- a new, modern init system (not SySV!!;))
- like the bsdish ports system
and please remember - slackbox it's not a clone of the slackware/gentoo/(*bsd-like with linux kernel)/anything_more, slackbox it's continuing of the slackware linux traditions with new addons and features, you can call it - SecSlack ;)

please reply for my question - who can help me with stable mirror for this purposes ?
and who wants help me on this work ?

I'm looking for a good tutorial website for slackware. I'm new to linux and slackware so something that could help me figure out how to do specific things would be great.

4:09 pm - Installing the 2.6 kernel from Disc 2
Image
bsdbox
For anyone who's interested, I posted a sort of HOWTO on LinuxQuestions for installing the 2.6 kernel that comes with the Slackware discs. Mine is based on the Slackware-current discs as of 5-18-05. So obviously, whatever changed happen will need to be adjusted for.

Take a peek: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=327786

2:32 pm - 10.0 on a laptop
Image
xellos303
I recently installed Slackware 10.0 on an old Dell Latitude laptop. I'm still having a few problems with configuration and things.

1. I'm plugging an optical wheel mouse into the PS/2 port, but I can't get the scroll wheel to work.

2. When I'm in X and switch to a non-X display, then switch back, the screen is very dim. I have to quit X and restart to fix it.

3. Cardmgr sometimes freezes (says "listening on 2 sockets") during boot. Unplugging my network card and PS/2 mouse seem to make this problem less common, but I've still had it happen with nothing plugged in. Perhaps related is rc.hotplug start freezing sometimes, too.

Thanks

10:14 pm - file server
Image

so, i've been using linux now for about a year as a desktop system and i've gotten pretty comfortable with it in that regards. now - i've acquired a couple of older machines, and i would like to use one simply as a file server (i have a huge hard drive full of media i would like to share access with my housemates). i havent done very much research on how to do this yet, and i know almost nothing about setting up a server of any kind, and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, tips, tricks, whatever. one specific question i have is that we're all already on a LAN for our school, and i figure we could ssh into the server that way, but is that a ludicrous way to access large video files and whatnot from the server? should we create a separate LAN with the server? any thoughts would be much appreciated.
